If you have an EverDrive, make sure to try the unreleased prototype!
Extremely interesting in that, at the very least, it has vastly superior music to the final retail release.
So I was reading more of Console Wars today and my dad asks me what I'm reading, so I was explaining it to him how its about Sega of America's attempt to overthrow Nintendo in the 16-bit generation. His response?
"Whole bunch of bullshit. There was never an American or Japanese Sega. Everyone knows Sega was a British company. That's where the Mega Drive's true home is."
Lmao.
Is $25 for a complete Target Earth a good deal?
Air Busters:
Another Genesis shmup. What the system lacked in RPG's it more than made up for in quality action titles. This one could be considered to be a minor classic. In all honesty, it's your standard shmup but everything -for the most part- is executed very well. The main gimmick in this game is that you have an unlimited use of your "bomb" weapon, but it has to be charged up, it has cool down after being used, and it's main purpose is to clear the screen of bullets rather than enemies.
It's pretty good but the difficulty ramps up almost immediately in level 2. Plus it has the equivalent of the "ice level" in a platformer where precise control is taken away from you for 2 levels. Another thing I hate is that the power ups are misleading when you grab them. P upgrades your firepower. But what does S do? You'd think it would upgrades speed, right? Nope, it gives you two satellites that fire and protect you. You'd think H would be Homing, right? No, it gives you a worthless satellite that slowly fires in 360 directions. What does R do? Rockets? Nope, reverse fire.
The enemy you have to kill throws your power ups in a weird arc that you can get you killed. And when you die, you have to wait 5 seconds to play and the game spawns you dead center of the screen where often times you will just miss getting a power up.
Other than that, great title worth checking out.
Looks like those scans from the beta version EGM played match up with the unverified beta version ROM out there. Check out the position and lack of cloud cover over the moon in Ryu's background and how level the clay tiles on the roof of the house to the rightmost side of the stage are compared to the released game and the unverified beta ROM. The very same, from what I can tell.
Oh my god you guys I just made an incredible pickup. Was at my favorite local store when they got a huge lot of Genesis games in and I walked out with such an incredible deal I still can't believe it.
so incredibly happy to now own all four original Phantasy Star titles, and Warsong is a game I never thought I would find a decent at a decent price.
I even received Syd of Valis for free (!) because the store runs a promotion where they give you a sixth item free of charge if you purchase five games. also used a 20% discount they provide you for every tenth visit which is why some of the prices on the receipt are a little weird. Their system applies it in a very strange way but their original asking price for everything was right around $200 total which was honestly a solid fucking price from the beginning. Every last one is CIB and mint. Shining Force II even has two fucking manuals in it for some reason.
can someone tell me about X-Men 2?
And doesn't require you to reset your Genesis as well.=pBetter than 1 on every conceivable level - as a comic fan, I think it's great & totally gotta get back to it!

I was thinking that I wanted to collect Genesis games CIB, but I'm having second thoughts. My entire SNES connection is all bare carts, so maybe it wouldn't be so bad to not have cases and manuals for EVERY Genesis game. I have about half and half right now, CIB and bare. You see, it's terrible in that I'm cheap, but I hear the siren call of the completionist quite strongly. Very contradictory forces are at war within me.
^how do you feel about cardboard Gen boxes? They're even flimsier than Nintendo ones imo.
I printed out custom art fro S&K, Comix Zone, and Phatasy Star IV and just threw 'em in clamshells.

Half the frame rate in coop!
Big sprites makes the game harder than it would have been with smaller ones.
But a better game than the first and I loved that as a kid.

Well, went and grabbed a cheap Model 1 Genesis for $25 CDN today. Pretty happy!
Nice! Do the controllers work well too?

drool, love classic genesis, congrats! =)
He mentions Truxton in just about every shmup review. Same with Jar Jar. Love Mark tho.Agreed, thanks! Also, after opening up the controller and cleaning it a bit I restored nearly all functionality to the buttons. Enjoying some Bio Hazard Battle with my coffee this morning, though can't wait till Truxton and Herzog Zwei arrive; CGR hyped me up too much and had to grab those, haha.
Funny you should ask, it is a little wonky but have two en route from Ebay so crises averted .
Take them apart and wash the plastic bits in warm soapy water. The sides of the buttons and dpad disc get super grungy!! Give 'em a good scrub and they'll be good as new.
Also take plain printer paper and rub the bottom side of the rubber contact thingies.

FINALLY grabbed a High Definition Graphics model with good sound! The last two I got my hands on, one had a buzz and the other one just didn't work.
So happy! My tower of power is truly complete!
i have it on the 6 Pack, getting better at it. i can make it to the highway stage but not past it.You should get Revenge. It's the better of the 3 games
You should get Revenge. It's the better of the 3 games
hm? it gives spiderman copyright on the title screen.truth right there=)
plus the 6 pack does not have DC/marvel cameo
hm? it gives spiderman copyright on the title screen.
Revenge's level design and bosses are better IMO.I still cant agree with that. Shinobi 3 just has too much going for it.

Playing Genesis through component cables with minimal fuss sounds like a dream to me.

As we move into production, this is a good time for us to issue another reminder that not all TVs accept the 240p signals produced by these consoles, and that we're not doing any upsampling or scaling in these cables. Both a list of TVs we have tested and instructions for testing your own TV can be found here. If your TV doesn't accept 240p, you'll either need to get a video processor or get in touch with us at support@hdretrovision.com
