^ i thought SFII on Genesis/MD was great bc the audio samples didn't change pitch (just like the arcade but unlike snes which was annoying) depending on the button used for specials.
but reading Ken's review on the last scan, "it plays better than the arcade..." yeah okaayy...

we really did get a fantastic port, though

If you have an EverDrive, make sure to try the unreleased prototype!
Extremely interesting in that, at the very least, it has vastly superior music to the final retail release.

say whaaaaaaaat
tryin this one soon!

So I was reading more of Console Wars today and my dad asks me what I'm reading, so I was explaining it to him how its about Sega of America's attempt to overthrow Nintendo in the 16-bit generation. His response?

"Whole bunch of bullshit. There was never an American or Japanese Sega. Everyone knows Sega was a British company. That's where the Mega Drive's true home is."

Lmao.

haha...real talk, if he'dve said SMS, there's be 0 argument

Air Buster:

Another Genesis shmup. What the system lacked in RPG's it more than made up for in quality action titles. This one could be considered to be a minor classic. In all honesty, it's your standard shmup but everything -for the most part- is executed very well. The main gimmick in this game is that you have an unlimited use of your "bomb" weapon, but it has to be charged up, it has cool down after being used, and it's main purpose is to clear the screen of bullets rather than enemies.

It's pretty good but the difficulty ramps up almost immediately in level 2. Plus it has the equivalent of the "ice level" in a platformer where precise control is taken away from you for 2 levels. Another thing I hate is that the power ups are misleading when you grab them. P upgrades your firepower. But what does S do? You'd think it would upgrades speed, right? Nope, it gives you two satellites that fire and protect you. You'd think H would be Homing, right? No, it gives you a worthless satellite that slowly fires in 360 directions. What does R do? Rockets? Nope, reverse fire.

The enemy you have to kill to get a power up throws your power ups in a weird arc that you can get you killed. And when you die, you have to wait 5 seconds to play and the game spawns you dead center of the screen where often times you will just miss getting a power up.

Other than that, great title worth checking out.

Not only do i need to play this game, but i need THE GLOVE!!!

Looks like those scans from the beta version EGM played match up with the unverified beta version ROM out there. Check out the position and lack of cloud cover over the moon in Ryu's background and how level the clay tiles on the roof of the house to the rightmost side of the stage are compared to the released game and the unverified beta ROM. The very same, from what I can tell.

Oh my god you guys I just made an incredible pickup. Was at my favorite local store when they got a huge lot of Genesis games in and I walked out with such an incredible deal I still can't believe it.

so incredibly happy to now own all four original Phantasy Star titles, and Warsong is a game I never thought I would find a decent at a decent price.

I even received Syd of Valis for free (!) because the store runs a promotion where they give you a sixth item free of charge if you purchase five games. also used a 20% discount they provide you for every tenth visit which is why some of the prices on the receipt are a little weird. Their system applies it in a very strange way but their original asking price for everything was right around $200 total which was honestly a solid fucking price from the beginning. Every last one is CIB and mint. Shining Force II even has two fucking manuals in it for some reason.

How much do you care about the condition of manuals, by the way? The reason I ask is that I have a Warsong manual for which the staples have rusted pretty badly and left minor stains on the back cover. It's really nice otherwise, but I'd like to upgrade to a mint manual, and if you had any interest, I'd offer a trade plus some decent cash (as long as your manual is indeed mint).

I was thinking that I wanted to collect Genesis games CIB, but I'm having second thoughts. My entire SNES connection is all bare carts, so maybe it wouldn't be so bad to not have cases and manuals for EVERY Genesis game. I have about half and half right now, CIB and bare. You see, it's terrible in that I'm cheap, but I hear the siren call of the completionist quite strongly. Very contradictory forces are at war within me.

Every Genesis game I have is in the original box & about 60% have the manuals. I don't worry to much about the manuals, I just really want the game, but if I get it cheap, great.

There was a time when I was picking up N64 & SNES games in boxes but I can't stand cardboard, so no more, just cart only and use UGC now. Genesis games can take a beating, stacked up, pile them in a box, etc... & you can always replace the clamshell from a cheaper game.

So, just the cart and box on most games is a lot cheaper than complete & if you have the space, go for it. I love the Genesis boxes, but thats just me.

^how do you feel about cardboard Gen boxes? They're even flimsier than Nintendo ones imo.
I printed out custom art for S&K, Comix Zone, and Phatasy Star IV and just threw 'em in clamshells.

I hate them. The carts never sit inside the triangular flaps and always slide to the bottom. I have some box protectors for Gen & 32X games, but yeah, they're flimsy.

Without even trying, I managed to get completely sucked in to Shining Force II.
Simple combat but very addictive. Good pacing so far, I'm about 12 hours in.
I can't get over how good this game looks. The art from character portraits to battle sequences are really detailed. I can't really put my finger on it, but something about the style reminds of some old school anime like Record of Lodoss War.

Cock Strain, Lifetime Warranty
Better than 1 on every conceivable level - as a comic fan, I think it's great & totally gotta get back to it!

Half the frame rate in coop!
Big sprites makes the game harder than it would have been with smaller ones.
But a better game than the first and I loved that as a kid.

Thanks, I think I'll buy it!

/edit/

aaaaaand I bought it. ~$16 shipped, cart only. my roommate had a blast playing through Streets of Rage with me, and he likes X-Men, so this should go over well.

Looks like you're right. ST2 Turbo is definitely a descendent of the first known Beta.

FINALLY grabbed a High Definition Graphics model with good sound! The last two I got my hands on, one had a buzz and the other one just didn't work.

So happy! My tower of power is truly complete!

drool, love classic genesis, congrats! =)

Agreed, thanks! Also, after opening up the controller and cleaning it a bit I restored nearly all functionality to the buttons. Enjoying some Bio Hazard Battle with my coffee this morning, though can't wait till Truxton and Herzog Zwei arrive; CGR hyped me up too much and had to grab those, haha.

Speaking of controller, that ebay case I had against a merchant who literally shipped an empty sealed envelope was closed in my favor. I should see the refund by Monday.

It pays to take pics of every sealed package you receive.

He mentions Truxton in just about every shmup review. Same with Jar Jar. Love Mark tho.

Funny you should ask, it is a little wonky but have two en route from Ebay so crises averted :p.

Take them apart and wash the plastic bits in warm soapy water. The sides of the buttons and dpad disc get super grungy!! Give 'em a good scrub and they'll be good as new.

Also take plain printer paper and rub the bottom side of the rubber contact thingies.

Thanks for the tips, man! I will be sure to do this next time there's an issue. I just used a cloth with a bit of alcohol.

A little late on my response, but Air Buster is fantastic. I discovered it only a few years ago and immediately fell in love with it. A fantastic title all around.

This may seem like a weird statement, but the color pallet reminds me of Sonic 2 oddly enough, and that's a good thing. It's just a great time all around.

Spiderman was removed for the Wii and PS3 versions but he's in all of the cart and Sega CD versions. Sega had the rights to the character for a while.

For the highway level, learn the timing of the cars (IIRC it is about 3 seconds between them) and you can use the exploding magic as a last ditch effort to refill your life bar. If you need lives there is a hidden 1UP (so 2 extra lives) at the beginning of the factory level before you fight the Terminator. Grab it, die, repeat to build up lives.

Shinobi 3 technically does a lot of things better but I like Revenge more. It's my favorite game on the system.

Some good news, folks:

https://www.kickstarter.com/project...super-nintendo-component-cables/posts/1490839

Playing Genesis through component cables with minimal fuss sounds like a dream to me.

As we move into production, this is a good time for us to issue another reminder that not all TVs accept the 240p signals produced by these consoles, and that we're not doing any upsampling or scaling in these cables. Both a list of TVs we have tested and instructions for testing your own TV can be found here. If your TV doesn't accept 240p, you'll either need to get a video processor or get in touch with us at support@hdretrovision.com

Get one of those for the exact same result:

Bonus points for using Scart RGB all the way up, until a single Component conversion.
