geez...the 3 button felt great after the SMS pads, haha...nevermind that left-handed SMS arcade stick thing (thank fuck it at least brought a rapid fire dongle)

i used the 3 button arcade stick forever though...but yeah, at this point there's 0 reason to not use the nicer 6 button. i still remember a 2011 or so craigslist deal where i got hyperstone heist, sonic 3 & 2 of those controllers for $25, good times!

That price is too good to be true. It's probably a counterfeit. Which is kind of ironic in a way.

I got my Model 1 Genesis with AV Cords, official AC Adapter, and controller last week for 25 CDN ($18 USD) from a local retro game store. Sounds like I made out like a bandit :p Though it seems I should've got a 6-button controller instead!

EDIT: Misread and thought you were talking about David's pickup! My bad.

alright! just got back and tested the headphone audio jack and system:
everything's greenlight:

best 20 bucks i spent today =)

Vis-a-vis 3-button pads: size is right, but the D-Pad is garb. So stiff. I hadn't realized how bad it was until I tried a 6-button pad, and man, that D-Pad is almost, if not just, as good as the Model 2 Saturn D-Pad. (A little looser, I suppose.)

Perfectly functional if you've nothing better, at least.

Ever since I got my new retro corner set up I've been plugging my Sennheisers into my Mega Drive and thumping old fav tunes into the night, it's heaven...

I still like the 3 button pads but I have big sausage like hands.

Looking to get an Everdrive - is this a good one? Thanks!

If you want to directly support the creator of the Everdrive, buy from his own site - http://shop.krikzz.com

this - you're gonna get questionable quality, and a really low model one at best....the board for the like model at krikzz's isn't too much more than that, i wanna say - but as a huge fan of the system, i can't recommend saving for a mega everdrive enough! SMS, genesis + 32X (with hardware, natch), plus savestates!

Damn you all. I've ordered a 6-button one, Lol. The D-pad looking much closer to the Saturn's pushed me over the edge.

looking back, it's plain to see that was the evolution, yeah - which is why i can't really argue with its superiority as a controller, it turned into easily one of the finest ones to grace a console with that saturn revision.

I...need...this!!!

i wanted one too, but i'm gonna end up holding out for an FM modded SMS + everdrive just to play stuff like PS1 with the FM audio + fan translation, haha

Just ordered a Power Base Mini FM for my JP Megadrive, now to get on the SMS collecting train. However I just realized many games were EU/PAL exclusive, so I guess these will play too fast when played on JP megadrive, and the powerbase doesn't magically correct this? What are my options?

You'll be fine. Only a few exclusive were made for 50Hz, everything else plays at the right speed at 60Hz. I think the Codemasters games don't play at all on a 60Hz machine (Micro Machines, Dizzy), and I personally experienced Wimbledon 2 and Power Strike 2 being too fast at 60Hz. Everything else is fine.

For these few games you could install a refresh rate switch, which goes along the language switch and you want that installed to play some region-locked Japanese games. https://mdpal60.net/wiki/megadrive/regionmod/start

My quest for getting a worthy '50th Mega Drive game' seems to have hit a major crossroad... I could buy a complete copy (it even comes with the registration card) of Gley Lancer, for 200 euros shipped. I know the game goes for even higher prices, and it's supposed to be a very solid shmup.
Anyone here has it/played it, to help me pulling the trigger? I have to decide between this or Keio for the Mega CD, and since they both fascinate me more or less the same way, I'd like to go for the better game.

For what it's worth, Gley Lancer is available on the Wii Virtual Console.

They're both good, but I think I'd actually slightly prefer Gley Lancer.

Well, GAF was definitely right. The 6-button controller arrived and I am liking it *way* more. The d-pad feels fantastic. The weight/girth of the 3-button is nice but everything else feels much nicer and responsive on here IMO. Thanks for the recommendation!

Side Question: I got a Game Genie en route primarily for playing some imports on the Genesis. Is there any reason to take the thing out, playing import or otherwise? I know the Action Replay cart can sometimes be finicky on the Saturn, so just wondering if I'm better off keeping the Game Genie in permanently. Thanks.

I'm not crazy about the MD's STG lineup, myself. I mean, it's got some great games, and it's better than what's on SFC, but like, the arcade ports on Saturn, Dreamcast, and especially Xbox 360 destroy it. Probably PSX and PS2 as well.

Well, they were different times, I guess, plus I'm not sure the machine iteself could pull off the same porting capabilities of the later systems (even considering the arcade scene back then, isn't it a bit unfair to blame the MD because it got no DoDonpachi or Mushihimesama? :p).
That said, I'm looking at my collection right now... Thunder Force III, IV, Musha Aleste, Gaiares, Aero Blasters, Ex-Ranza, Hellfire, Tatsujin, Granada, Raiden... To me, it's all prime stuff to play. Oh, and there are games I'm still tracking down, such as V-V, Steel Empire, Gynoug. Honestly, I though shmups were one of the better represented genres on the MD.

It's a good library for its time, absolutely, but that's usually not how I look at old console libraries. I don't use that qualifier when talking about, say, action-platformers on the Famicom.

Other points against it for me include my general distaste toward Compile's games in the genre (which tosses out Musha Aleste) and my disinterest in less-than-accurate ports of arcade games (which rules out stuff like Raiden, Tatsujin, and V-V).

Hey everyone. I just found my childhood model 2's, 32x, and Sega CD. I only have RF cables though.

May I have some suggestions/help with what cables/adapters to use on my plasma? It supports component and HDMI. Hopefully I can get something that isn't too expensive that looks decent. I don't own a CRT right now unfortunately.

We couldn't look at it from a more different perspective, I believe, but I see your point there, so fair enough.

Right now, Scart cable, Scart audio connector, RGB to Component encoder. Should be about $80 with a top notch cable, $60 otherwise.
Or you have the special Component cable that got a kickstarter some time ago, but who knows how long you will wait for it. $50 with no control over the cable quality.

Really dude? Its your opinion which you're entitled to but it's wrong - DC and X360 have a better lineup? Pass the pipe.

It's a different era too. You can't judge the MD on its lack of bullet hell shmups like dodonpachi when the genre wasn't even invented. There is a clear divide that happened in the middle of the 32bits era, technologically and conceptually, and you just can't in good faith compare the two.

So I picked this up for £30 a week ago, it came with the RF lead already attached to the console, a separate scart lead, power adapter and a 3 button pad.

Though it is really hit and miss if it boots the cartridges and I'm not sure what to do. What is the common fix for making sure the pins and connectors are in order? What can I try to help make sure it functions better?

Cheers

I consider Cave to have developed many of the best games in the genre, and the 360 has 14 (!!!!) great ports of Cave games. And that's without touching the releases by G.Rev, Qute, Natsume, Treasure, etc.

And yeah, Dreamcast too. Border Down, Ikaruga, Giga Wing, Gunbird 2, Mars Matrix...

These games are heaaavy, heavy hitters, and there are quite a few of them.

I'm fine comparing and judging entire genres, let alone slight shifts in direction inside a single established genre. If we're talking some desert island "pick a console STG library" scenario, I'd confidently go with a later console while recognizing that certain earlier ones represented the genre better than their contemporaries. Maybe that seems ugly and harsh, but I think it's a genre that generally got better over time and the individual console libraries reflect that.

Actually, I don't want you to pass me any of whatever you're on - I don't think I can handle the kool aid. I think you and the 14!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Cave games need some time alone:

Mad jealous, a decent model 1 still eludes me...

did what Conezays suggested, i typed in SEGA and a whole slew of high definition model 1 ones were up for sale on Craigslist. i was looking local in case someone swapped enclosures from a previous repair. hopefully you live by a big city, the guy i got if for also ships free but at the momeny he only has a model one w/ a sega cd 2 as a bundle for 100
if he gets another stand alone unit, i'll pm you.

You rock, they do come up, but they tend to be overpriced or in relatively poor shape.

Please don't use that tone when talking about the greatest 16-bit shmup, M.U.S.H.A

What is the actual price of Ex-Ranza? (Ranger X in USA)... Is the Japanese version impossible to find nowadays?

Loose can be had for about $15-$20 & CIB $30-$35 US. JP version add about 15%-20%. If you grab it, better have a 6-button controller.

I picked up a few games locally today. It has been a while since I decided to grow the collection. I got Alex Kidd CIB, flashback, super smash TV and space harrier II.

Alex Kidd is great. It has a lot of charm. Nice and easy too.

The real winner though is super smash TV. What a great arcade game. Music is good. Action, weapons and power ups are great. It's an awesome 2 player experience. I'll be bringing that one out a lot with company.

Hey guys, last night was another Mega Drive night here, and while we were playing some Super Street Fighter II, I noticed how lower is the music volume, compared to every other game I own, and even to the sound effects volume in the same game. Is it normal? Or is this a sign of a cart in need of some repair?

If this can help, it's a Japanese cart, running on a Japanese MD2. No problems with contacts, booting games, everything works fine. Thanks in advance! ^_-
