Sega Genesis/MegaDrive Appreciation Thread: Alien Storm > Golden Axe

yeah, i mentioned in the retroGAF thread that my Marantz receiver does not accept 240P signals from my ps2 playing psx over component since someone got the same series as mine.

thankfully my pioneer kuro 151fd, not mentioned on the list, accepts 240p so i'll be all over this =)

Sure, but this presents a far simpler and cheaper solution for those in North America without using SCART cables, an extra power outlet, etc. That is definitely a good deal right now though for that converter.

For a single setup, sure. But once you have more than one console to use with Component, I'm not sure it's actually cheaper.

i saw a model 1 high definition label genesis in a retro store today for 39.99 with a composite and power cable. just curious what the market is....
is that a good deal or too high? (my genesis is at parents but i may be tempted to pick up another at the right price)

The one I took the picture of I got for $25 CDN ($18 US) from a retro store here; your mileage may vary as they definitely go for higher on Ebay.

I got my HDG Model 1 on EBay in November for about $20. It was in great shape, but no cords or controllers. Here's the thing - it wasn't labeled as HDG model in the description. I just saw it in the picture. You might want to just search for a Genesis and see if you can find one by sight as eBay sellers who list it as such will charge a premium.

thanks Conezays and RadarScope1, appreciate the quotes. i might just pick it up, since it comes w a controller and cords and he allows 7 day returns.

If you live a greater than medium-sized city you should also watch Craigslist like a hawk and wait for a deal to pop up. Set up an app to watch for certain keywords like "Sega" and you'll find some deals. This is if you have the patience for it, though.

If this was me, I would grab it.
Still on a model 2
i'll have to wait till next weekend, it was southern nj and i travel down there once a week.

yeah i'm in nj right by nyc, i'll check craigslist all this week.

last week, i saw a nice ps2 silver slim loose for 20 bucks but already have 2 (slim in hand and my launch at my parents) so i balked.

I am having a hell of a time finding a Sega 3-button arcade power stick locally. The Ascii Fightpad SG is darn near ubiquitous, and the 6-button stick is pretty easy to find, but the original 3-button stick is like unicorn-tier. It's getting on my nerves, man.

I didn't know that was possible. I thought SMS carts had a different pinouts than Genesis carts

You're right. Sorry, I wasn't paying attention.

I have a Game Genie for my import games.

And I have a Powerbase Mini for my Master System carts. I don't own a Master System.

As far as I can tell the Powerbase Mini works fine. There is one (out of the 25 that I own) SMS game that doesn't seem to work. It's one of the Wonderboy games. I believe Wonderboy III. The game boots up, but then I can't move the character. The only button that results into something happening on the screen is the jump button. And I can only do that once. After that the character enters a loop where it falls through the bottom of the screen and resurfaces on top only to fall through the bottom again. I don't know if this is related to the Powerbase Mini or not however, as I have no Master System to compare it with.

Sorry, I'm confused. If you have multiple consoles you want to play via component, wouldn't you still need multiple SCART cables?

In other words, say I want to connect my Genesis and SNES to my North American CRT via component. My choices would be:

1) Buy a component cable for my Genesis and one for my SNES
or
2) Buy a SCART cable for my Genesis and one for my SNES, as well as that SCART to component converter.

Wouldn't option 2 actually be more expensive and less convenient (since you need an extra power outlet)? Or am I missing something?

Thanks in advance! This is all new to me and I want to make sure I understand everything before I jump in. I've got a nice 27" Toshiba CRT (that I bought new many moons ago), which thankfully has component inputs.

Cool, thanks for the replies!

Unrelatedly, my two controllers arrived in the mail today. One of them plugged in without issue, while the other requires me to really push it in the controller port to get it in. I imagine it's due to the holes on the controller dongle being smaller? Has anyone else had this issue or know if I should just not bother using the controller? It works fine once the system's on but I don't want to be doing damage to the controller port, etc. They're both Model 1650 controllers but the dongle looks different on the 2nd one (pictured on the right). Ignore the dust for now :p

There's positives to 2, though. Namely, you now only take up one component jack on any component switch you're looking to buy, and you can transcode any console that supports RGB, whereas the cables in option 1 are strictly limited to the SNES and Genesis. Wanna get component out of your PS1 or Saturn? Tough shit, they're not covering that (well, not yet - I haven't paid attention to them, so for all I know, maybe they're planning to expand after these two consoles).

At the end of the day, the only one who can decide which positives are more necessary or which negatives are bigger deal-breakers is the one whose setup this is going into.

But don't you need a different SCART cable for each console? And it looks like you can connect only one SCART cable to that converter at a time. So say I bought SCART cables for my Genesis, SNES, and Saturn. Wouldn't I need to disconnect the one console connected to that converter every time I wanted to play another? Then there's the matter of audio—I don't fully understand how you're supposed to get audio from a SCART cable. That converter only has video out.

Either a SCART with RCA out like that one Ebay seller makes, plug a 3.5mm to RCA out cable to your Genesis 1 or PC/Turbo duo headphone port, or some sort of breakaway box.

So far, I just use the first two.

Anyone? Shameless bump for help. Much appreciated.

There are a lot of little differences controller to controller. I took apart and cleaned three controllers this past weekend. All of them had different d-pad designs. One of them was a two-part assembly with a screw, one had a rocker like a SNES pad, the other had no rocker but the rubber membrane had a ball bearing in the center.

With all these tiny running changed it wouldn't surprise me if there is a run of controllers with a different plug.

If you decide to take it apart to clean it up, make a note of the assembly date. They're all marked on the inside. There will be circles of numbers representing dates; one for the month and one for the year.

Thanks for the reply. They look clean and it *works*, I just don't want it to be too tight in the controller port; I'm likely just being anal, but the other two controllers I've used insert quite easily. I haven't had a Genesis since I owned one in the 90's so I don't really remember the specifics and minutiae of the hardware.

That isn't really any different from component cables, since the consoles in question never had those, thus you'd have to special order them anyway.

SCART switches exist. Granted, they're of varying quality, but still, they exist.

It'd require a separate adapter to split off the audio (looks like this), but it's only like $10 or so IIRC.

To me, this is the fun part about Sega. There are so much minutiae as you put it. So many little things to jump into and investigate and play with. Is anybody going to care that each of my three-button controllers is slightly different? No, not at all. But to me, that's more fun that scouring pawn shops for rare games. Games can run on anything these days, but the hardware is tangible.

Hey GAF, assuming I can't get the game from the 3DS eShop (Euro peasant here XD), which version of Steel Empire would you suggest me? Mega Drive or Game Boy Advance?

Speaking of controllers, I've been playing a lot more of the Genesis lately and have come to the conclusion that the original 3-button, that I assume was a console pack-in, really sucks. The up on the d-pad is really difficult to get to register and the buttons feel mushy and unresponsive. I switched over to one of my 6-buttons and what a difference! The d-pad feels great and the buttons are nice and clicky. I found my new favorite.

And here I'd thought most prefer the original 3-button ones. I may have to grab a 6-button one now :p. Coming from the Saturn, the d-pad doesn't feel quite as nice.

And Khaz, I hadn't seen that model! Thanks.

I've heard that the Genesis and Mega-Drive 6 button controllers are a bit different in construction quality, is that the case?

My 6-Button broke when I cleaned it (The rubber pad under the B button came off), so I still need to replace it. Might import a Japanese one if they're significantly better.

the original 6-button pad from like 1992 is my favorite Genesis controller. The later 6-button pads had different designs and didn't do much for me.

i'm about to grab a high definition genesis for 20 bucks tonight. w/ sega r/f controller and power adaptor.

it comes w a 30 day warranty money back so if it doesn't work or if it's the wrong revision, i can get my money back. anyways, 20 bucks it's not too bad even if it doesn't work out.

Run like hell from the one with a blue start button.

I don't mind this one. It's a little smallish, though.

The official wireless infrared ones are ace. Six buttons, great d-pad, nice size but not a weird fucking shape like the 3 button, and it actually works. In fact I just tossed some batteries in mine last night and began using them again.

Nice. Great price.
