Sega Genesis/MegaDrive Appreciation Thread: Alien Storm > Golden Axe

I've shown you why and you're in full denial. No point in wasting anymore effort - you're a nation of one on this.

Wait, did I miss a post or did you guys discuss The Punisher in this thread awhile back?

I'd love to try out the arcade version or Capcom get the rights back and re-release it for XBOX/PS!

Plus with The Punisher being in Season 2 of Daredevil, you never know! I might need to get a twitter and hashtag some shit to Capcom haha

Even though I obviously haven't played the Arcade, saying it's a HORRIBLE port is a bit silly. It's a very playable game, unlike say Double Dragon 3 on Genesis or bullshit with Final Fight on SNES, which had a missing character and no co-op!

I'm not going to full out defend The Punisher compared to the arcade game because I haven't played the arcade version, but it is a pretty good game. It's one of the better beat em ups on the Genesis and I like how big the sprites are. Marvel is in right now for sure so I can see the appeal.

I'd say it is still a must have for the console

Opinions on Haunted? I found a complete copy for cheap but won't buy it if it's mediocre.

oh man, how cheap we talkin? mine's cart only, i might be interested!

but yeah, it's one of the most 90's games out there, and i love it. gets repetitive, but there's just nothing like it - you're basically using your energy to set up spooky traps to force a yuppie family out of different places...there's a lotta variety, but that's the gag, and when you're outta gas, you have to wander the underworld collecting energy and avoiding attacks to get back at it. definitely not for everyone, but i've always dug it.

€15. Hmm, might bite and just sell it on if I don't like it:)

Haunting rules, I should buy it. I used to rent it all the time. Kind of an Aaahh! Real Monsters plot to it, you are in the business of strategically scaring each member of a family with implied mafia ties out of every house they move to.

I guess you'd say it was from an era where EA took more chances on unique, creative ideas? Super fun, totally buy it. Just be prepared for the final boss battle to come out of nowhere and control mostly differently from the rest of the game. It gets me every time I get that far.

Full of jelly. :)
Why is it so damn hard to find one which doen't cost like a couple of Framemeisters, here? *shakesfisttothesky*

Oh, and if you pick a title I own, I'm also in for the game-a-month thingy. Good stuff!
i got it from Mega, he was really great and gave me a great deal when he found out i was a GAFer. he posted it up on GAF but i guess no one was near local at the time for a local pick up. i'm getting the cables tomorrow so hopefully i can start playing on it.

I mentioned this about 2 months ago for this very reason and got zero responses. Most games are stupid cheap still.
I am ready for a club. So much I still need to get to.

if we do it, it'll give me focus on collecting and playing genesis games in an organized manner =)

Great gem of a game, as much as I am not a fan of Disney movies, I seem to be racking up the Disney games as of late...

Haven't touched it since I had it as a kid on the SEGA CD, but is that water level with the ghosts as hard as I remember, or was I just stupid?

Just cleaned it up and stuck it in, will sit down later, still a looker of a game and great early TT work, ala Davie Jaffe

nice pickup...as i look at the box, i keep staring at that Duo R out of the corner of my eye =)

They are my 16bit playmates, no SNES in the mix...yet.

They do not, although I think the cases have NAMCOT where they'd normally read SEGA.
Yep, you're right. They all have their own 'NAMCOT' cases, plus a little smudge of color on the inner part of the cart shell, right in front of the contacts plate.
Some Japanese Taito games seem to have a similar, branded cases... Darius II does, for example, whereas Fire Mustang comes into a regular 'SEGA' box.

Sweet. I have this game in my wishlist too... Not sure if I want to buy the SEGA-CD, or the PlayStation version though.

imo the Mega-CD is the better version out there. The PX1 was completely redrawn, and while it does look nice, it also look different, it's not a 16bit game with a limited palette any more. The big problem with the PS1 though is that it only came out in PAL and thus is plagued with the PAL disease of crunched screen and slow gameplay. The PAL Mega-CD game has the same problem, but as with every SEGA console it can be solved with a switch.

Nothing, just PM me your address I'll just send it to you if you want it.

thank you for your generosity =)

i'll pm you but let me at least paypal you something at least for shipping.

I don't know what I'm looking at but it sure looks cool. I'm not in the US alas. Did it have a PAL release?

edit: oh, if anyone wants it, definitely you can have first dibs and pass over me as i already feel grateful for Jake from State Farm's generosity =)

It's Sub Terrania, and it's supposed to be pretty rad. I think it's been released here in Europe as well.
Super generous giveaway, Jake!

Shouldn't it be a non-issue, in those games which were developed in EU? I mean, WipEout born PAL and, even if it doesn't run 100% fullscreen, it's not squashed and/or slow. Was it a different case, with Mickey Mania?

I'm definitely down for game of the month. Count me in!

Cool post on sub terrania, I actually just got a loose copy of that one on eBay for like a buck. Still waiting for the shipment. I see it everywhere though.

^ Looks in truly great conditions! I'd buy such a sweet looking copy in a heartbeat, on eBay.

Speaking of which, if there's some fellow gaffer selling nice, CIB Genesis and SEGA-CD games, willing to ship to Italy (I'm a collector since almost two decades, I'm aware we have the worst customs in the whole galaxy, but I usually buy stuff from Japan and never had a single issue with them), please let me know anytime. Global Shipping Program fucked things up big time, on eBay, and there are so many US games I'd like to buy, but no idea where I could pick them up, now, lol. :D

Bugs Bunny in Double Trouble was the last game for the system I ever purchased (pre-retro collecting era). I got it because Sonic 3D wasn't available at the time, lol.

Yep, I just checked with the Everdrive. It's one of those game that are region-locked almost properly PAL-optimised: the music and gameplay are at the correct speed, the screen is still crunched.

Nah, the idea that a game made in Europe would automatically have the correct gameplay on their PAL release is not true. Most of the time European-developed console games suffered the same flaws as their NTSC counterparts, simply because the dev units came directly from Japan and were 60Hz. It's also easier to base the speed of stuff on the framerate as it's a super reliable timing. Very rarely would you have a dev spend time and money to optimise their game for PAL-land.

I don't know about WipeOut (I only own the PAL exclusive 3SE), but I know that Tomb Raider and Rayman aren't optimised for the PAL region (Tomb Raider has landscape instead of black bars, but the models are crunched and the gameplay is slow). Checking now with a video of Mickey's wild adventure, it's also definitely slower than Mickey Mania on my Megadrive (the music is also slower which means it's not redbook btw). Crash Bandicoot is cool though. So it's like throwing a coin, sometime it is, sometime it's not ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. If it's a non-European studio, it most likely isn't.

Sub Terrania was published in a period where many PAL releases were region-locked, and some of them were PAL-optimised. Sonic Spinball and Sonic 3 got the same treatment, Legend of Thor had a shit optimisation that solves nothing but prevents the game from being played at 60Hz. before late 1993 no game were optimised, no matter the studio. Maybe SEGA, wanting to limit import madness also gave devs tools to properly develop for PAL.

Well the way the nes one works is pretty good. It uses some Google poll thing? I tried a high score challenge thing awhile back, but didn't have time to keep it up. This won't be like that of course, but who's gonna be in charge of the voting process / rule set?

i nominate Jake from State Farm since he brought it up 2 months ago and Teknoman for suggesting it or anyone who is willing to keep it up and running =)

With a Mega-ED, I'd be all over a Monthly game. I love my Genesis, and grew up with it, but never really got into shooters or a bunch of different Genesis exclusives outside of the core classics (Sonic, Gunstar, Aladdin...... Altered Beast)

I'm slowly getting into wanting an Everdrive for the Genesis...and other consoles. Sigh, my wallet. And I'll selfishly throw in Dragon's Fury as my recommendation for Game of the Month :p
