had to open this gif to see it, but damn! shouldve done that years ago, that fight was nerve racking for me as a kid, haha

I hate this fight, so that's an awesome trick. Good luck getting all the Chaos Emeralds with a CPU Tails though, he just kills your Ring count in the bonus stages.

for real - 2 is the only one i didn't get them all in, and its TAILS FAULT EVERY TIME
if you go 1player, it has to be Sonic only...does anyone get them all with tails, or is it just me?

You can save more time by jumping up into him as he does that move where he rushes back and forth across the stage without curing into a sawblade - around 0:15 on the in-game clock there.

The ring goals are raised in Sonic & Tails mode vs. Sonic/Tails Only, too. So... there's that.

Yeah, but it's far more risky!!! You need to be perfect or else you're dead!

...jesus, there's no reason to bring tails along at all, then!
Well, he flies the plane in Sky Chase for you, at least.

Although on the flipside, you could always ditch Sonic instead. Not like there's much point to doing so since Tails plays nigh identically in 2, but hey, he's cuter and fuzzier.

^ that sonic trick looks neat

best $10 you've spent in a while, m'man

One of the coolest Boss transformations

i usually get hit on that first jump. lol

i played some last night just through composite video, i'm still waiting for the genesis scart cables in the mail but want to give my impressions: i mentioned prior i didn't really like the genesis version but wanted to give it a go again.

first impressions all over:
wow! even over composite the graphics are good for this game. the sound is decent and controls like the arcade strider.
now, i remember why i didn't like the genesis version:
some parts of Strider was arranged where certain patterns, if done right looks like a movie scene. Strider in some parts felt like sonic. the way the timing was arranged for running was a bit like set dominoes falling beautifully into place. (example is the second board minefield cliffs) it's really a speed runner's paradise =) not only parts felt like sonic but there were parts that baited you w/ goodies that were placed purposely to try and kill you. (example: on airship, a goodie capsule placed on the launch deck, as soon as you take it, zip! the launch catapult zings you off the deck. i always enjoyed the risk/reward incentive to try and grab it w/o getting killed.

but the genesis version took away some of that magic.
for example: the first board. there's a ledge that's meant to run down and use as a ski slope and the platform at the end retracts is like a ski ramp, if done right: you get build speed and able to make a super jump to make it to the next platform but if you fail and don't make the jump or stand too long on the edge of the platform, it drops down ala return of the jedi into a pit where you have to fight your way out. (first mini boss). but if you make the jump you don't have to fight in the pit.
on genesis: if you run down, the spikes hit you 100% of the time so you can't even run. the second, if you somehow run back up and successfully make the jump not allowing the edge of the platform retract, you still get dropped down into the pit regardless: i think that killed the risk/reward ski/slope incentive

there's a similar risk/reward in the beginning of amazon stage (stage four where you're baited to stop with some goodies on the bottom of the cliff or can skip it by running past and safely making if before the platform collapses but if you do stop for it, exploding poison flowers bloom under your feet to kill you so you got to act quick and manually time the jumps over the collapsing bridge without any running momentum. (haven't test the genesis version of this part yet)

w/ second stage, once you get up the from the spiked Ferris wheels you should be able to bypass the miniboss and run down the hill but it won't let you until you beat him there. (sometimes i wait till the airship to beat him). at the bottom of the hill there's a platform with a goodie on it that drops off but if you time it right you can grab it and jump off while maintaining full speed. it's not there in the genesis version so i died. LOL... and that incentive is gone.
during the 3rd stage, there's a speed run once you get invincibility where the walls/gates close down on you. that part is a bit broken but maybe the timing is different for the genesis version as i stopped right there and moved unto messing w the sony BVM for the rest of the night =D

all in all, graphically it's a technical marvel, and i think i enjoyed it better playing it the second time around. despite certain challenges being taking away, overall it really plays like strider. i'll give it another go once the scart cables arrive =)

damn, didn't know about those changes from the arcade one...wish i couldve spent more time with that!

hmm...plus, the idea of SUPER TAILS sounds compelling! might do this next time

Cooler game ending with sonic.

Speaking of Mecha Sonic, thanks to me abusing level select cheat codes I learned to beat him and the last boss of the game way before I could even beat the game proper.

It's not a Non-TMSS, but it's in great shape and got it for a great price, and scooped up Bio Hazard battle along with it....

Now to hunt down a solid model 1 CD

Great looking system.

Does anyone in here have experience with the (Mega) Everdrive? Everything I've read seems to be very positive about it, with little to no criticisms (beyond the subjective enjoyment of using real carts, etc.).

No Genesis version of Blackthorne.

The last boss of Wonder Boy in Monster World is going to give me a stroke. I only have three casts of Thunder so dealing with the turrets is tricky, but it's the buzz saw that is really screwing me. The way it can bounce you around and tear you up is just mean. And the eyeball's hurt box is hugely in its favor.

That boss is one of the biggest assholes ever. To this day I'm still not sure how I managed to win the one time I did finish that game. It's kind of a crapshoot.

Good luck, wish I had any advice lol.

Yeah, that boss made me quit the game. And it's not even difficult up until that either, very frustrating.

I barely managed to do it. It's not even the fact that Tails gets rings and loses them that messes you up; it's the fact that some of the ring goals are much, much higher when playing as both.

I was complaining a few days ago about not being able to find a three button arcade power stick... Well, score. This BMF is beautiful. Now to shoot some spaceships.

Looks great! So is there a good reason to own both? I have the 6 button. Is the 3 button better for any specific reason? Better build? Just wanted to collect both?

The 6 buttons stick is so beautiful... Too bad it seems to cost a leg nowadays.

Also, speaking of expensive accessories: since the original PowerBase for the Mega Drive 2 is out of question - I mean, at that price, I'd just buy a Japanese Master System - is there any alternative, to play all MS games on my Japanese Mega Drive 2? I thought the PowerBase Mini didn't support card-based games, but I read the FM version does... Does anyone here use one of those? Are they region-free, and - most importantly - do they allow to play MS games from all regions?

There is a lot less palm space for your right hand on the 6er. Your hand has nowhere to rest. I always wish that XYZ mirrored ABC on the 6er because they're more comfortable to hit. Meanwhile on the three button you can comfortably put the curve of your palm on the corner of the stick while you hold down buttons in a shooter. The buttons feel more like authentic arcade buttons too, though they are not.

First time I used this thing I got farther than I ever have in MUSHA. I think a stick is critical for shooters.

None play card games. Luckily for you, all the western Master System card games were also released, and are much more common, in cartridge form. Only F-16 Fighter wasn't, but you really don't want it anyway. The card slot on the original device was mainly useful for the 3D glasses.

The Power Base Mini (FM) will play everything in western cartridge format. There is apparently a Japanese Power Base Mini FM being made, though I can't find an actual sale button. Once you have this specific adapter, you could use a Card catcher to play all the card games you want.

The Megadrive won't play SG-1000 games, unlike the Master System. No addon will ever allow it, backwards compatibility just doesn't go that far.

That's great, thank you. ;)
And yeah, my bad. I misread 'Supports Master System carts' as cards, on the PB Mini FM page.

Was that a trend? I mean, having microswitched sticks for Japan, and just regular versions for anywhere else. I know for sure the Ascii Fighter Stick MD-6 followed the same rule... Microswitches for the Japanese model, no microswitches for the American and European ones.

I'm not sure if it was the same for Saturn & Dreamcast. Those systems also got official arcade sticks in both regions that are essentially the same. The Dreamcast one is visually identical I think, with the green buttons.

Saturn had 2 different Virtua Sticks. One was microswitched (even had an arcade-spec Seimitsu LS-56 lever in the earlier configuration), while the other was a regular membrane style controller. Most regions only got the membrane one while Japan got both. The more desirable microswitched one carries the model number HSS-0136.

Yeah, sorry, I meant specifically with the Mega Drive/Genesis. I wonder if other controllers - from other manufacturers - were specifically designed for the different markets.

Cool. That's what I figured. Seems worth having, especially since so many arcade ports came in those early years when only three buttons were used. I like buying sticks for these retro consoles.

It is, and it is glorious... I've got both the 3 and 6 button flavors and they are indeed microswitched.

Hmmmmmm........

Wtf, bosses can pop up again as normal enemies in Shining in the Darkness? I just hit a corner on my way back down to level 2, Kaisercrab comes scuttling out.
