Will the Sailor Moon and Yu Yu Hakusho games work on a Genesis 2/3, or do they require Game Genie?

Speaking of which, do you guys know what's the best solution to play NTSC Genesis games on a Japanese Mega Drive 2?
I'm not interested in PAL games, but so far - after doing a bit of research - I'm still quite confused... I read that regular, cheap adapters won't work with Genesis games that are region-locked, so it seems the most recommended solutions are the Game Genie, or the Pro Action Replay 2. The former allows you to input game-specific codes, in order to bypass the region locks - plus I found this video on YT, showing the device working on a Japanese, Model 1 MD... I assume it should also run no problem on an MD2 - whereas the latter seems to be well regarded/reviewed in general, even though I still have to find any solid proof it will work on a NTSC-J system (European reviews, as expected, focus on the major 'using import games on PAL consoles' topic).
Another thing I'm still unsure about is, will I have to buy an NTSC Game Genie/Pro Action Replay 2 - since my console is NTSC itself - or a PAL cartdridge will do the job just fine? Thanks in advance! ^_-

Edit - it may sound like I'm looking for unnecessary trouble, but that's because I don't really want to mod my system.

Back from a retro convention, brought back some games :)

I was able to get PSIV for relatively cheap (€90) and it's in great condition. so I just finally bit the bullet on that one, I'm probably not gonna find it cheaper than that any time soon.

What does microswtiched mean?

Ever take a controller apart? Arcade joysticks don't use those rubber domes to activate contact points. They have mechanical switches. They're faster and feel better, but expensive and not as durable in the long run.

It's like he difference between membrane and mechanical keyboards.

Ah. Never knew console stuff outside of premium sticks did that. I assumed rubber was the standard. That's pretty interesting.

I had a great 3 button arcade pad but someone broke the stick on it. I'd love to have one again for all the shooters and Ms Pac Man

Wtf, bosses can pop up again as normal enemies in Shining in the Darkness? I just hit a corner on my way back down to level 2, Kaisercrab comes scuttling out.

Just wait until the puddles of water you keep coming across start coming to life... Or enemies start appearing in chests... Save early, save often!

PAL PSIV got a clamshell, no fair

haha yeah, also this =/

yeah, that's where i use the stick most too - really do love genesis Mrs Pac-Man, it goes for peanuts and like nobody talks about it too, oddly

god, just got flashbacks from the puddles...forgot about the chests, good call!

It's weird too considering the Japanese mega drive market was pretty darn small compared to the US market.

If you're into weird-ass controllers, check out this bad boy.

also, since i'm being neurotic about my backlog today: which would ya'll say is more important to finish/see through, Shadowrun or Landstalker?

with Shadowrun, for years i've been told there's a brilliant game here, if you can survive the early bits & get the system down a bit, thinking that'd be fun when i'm in that cyberpunk mood sometime. Landstalker seems cool & i love the team, but i'm gonna try that alternate control patch for diagonals or whatever...i'm just afraid i'd be forcing myself through what seems like a charming but tragically isometric game

What's wrong with the diagonals in Landstalker?
imo more than the isometric perspective, it's the fact that the screen is forever centred on Ryle that poses problems: jumping while moving diagonally makes for a bump in the scrolling which can be disorienting. Otherwise it's an excellent game.

yeah? does it look any different?

It's got a different decal where it says Genesis in that photo, plus blue auto-fire buttons in the same way the blue start button became grey moving from the Mega Drive to the Genesis.

Haha, that's the analog controller from Micomsoft (yes, the same ones behind the Framemeister). I want to say it works with at least Afterburner II, which they were also responsible for on Mega Drive?

Got a copy of mercs today on the cheap. Plays pretty good. That will be another awesome coop game to have in the library for when friends are over.

Did we ever vote on what we're playing in March?

We can start this Tuesday March 1st. When we reach 5 games I'll make the voting form up, give it a week allowing people to vote in. We can follow the same rules as the NES board to keep things consistent.

Though i'm not altogether sure on how the nominations worked in the NES club. I think several games were nominated for the month, then the vote was set up, then the winner was played.

I figured since it's the end of the month, we would start on the Tuesday. Let people pick, let the vote go for a couple days. Then the following week pick and vote for April. Then April 1st announce the game and do a vote again. Thoughts? I open to suggestions.

Sorry, kind of a rambling post...

A bit of nostalgia yesterday as I broke out the Genesis. I got it for my 11th birthday (35 now). I had my birthday party that year at an Aladdin's Castle. (Holy shit after googling, there are still a couple locations open!) Anyway, it was a blast! This was before you got tokens for parties, the employees would just walk around, open the cabinets, and hit the coin actuator to give free play time to everyone. I remember four of us beat TMNT the arcade game.

Anyway back to Genesis, The controller was not too responsive starting out but it seemed to get better the more I played. I looked around online and it looks like you can open them and clean them out. Anyone have experience doing that? It doesn't look too complicated but thought I would ask. I think it may also be a case of being used to the dualshock 3 and going back to an older controller that may just need a little more pressure.

Another issue is the headphone volume (gen 1 High Def graphics Genesis). I need to look into it more but it looks like the knob for the slider came off and got jammed back in below it. (Think: remove knob, push peg for volume slider to full volume, then jam the knob back underneath it). Very odd. I tried the headphone volume but it was very noisy and raspy. Probably a combo of being at full volume and not having been actuated in many, many years.

I plan on looking into the S-video mod (assuming I can take care of the previous issues). Playing on composite with mono sound on a plasma is less than amazing, lol and I'm not ready to jump into upscalers yet.

I did have fun though, NHLPA '93 is still fun and Revenge of Shinobi is a much better game than I remember it.

To top off the nostalgia after playing I saw that The Running Man and The 'Burbs were both on TV; movies I used to watch around my time with the Genesis, ha!

I had the chance to play Herzog Zwei earlier (in multiplayer), never having played it before, and not really knowing anything about it other than that it is praised highly and is the "first RTS". All I have to say is holy shit. What an incredibly cool game; I'm blown away. Feels incredibly deep. I only had the chance to play a few matches, and the person I was playing with wasn't really into it, but I'm really excited to be able to dig into it more deeply sometime.

I posted about this a couple pages back; check my post history. But yeah, it's super easy and it helps a ton. Finger oil collects around the circumference of the buttons and d-pad and becomes a sludge that gums up the works. Even if it looks clean from the outside, you really need to take it apart and soak all the plastic bits in warm soapy water. The rubber contacts can be cleaned by rubbing plain paper on the undersides (the black part) of the domes. It sounds weird but it works.

Got the good ending on Revenge of Shinobi last night - haven't done that in a while. I almost rage quit during stage 7-1; still hate the pixel perfect jumps you have to make on the level - even the jumping magic doesn't help with one of them.

It's march 1st somewhere in the world so lets pick 5 Genesis games to vote on.

1. Revenge of Shinobi
2. Phelios
3. Last Battle
4. Socket
5. Crackdown

Note: We'll pick the nominees and run the vote until this Sunday March 6th. On Monday the 7th we can pick our nominees for April and let that vote run till the end of the month. This we can play now and make our pick for April.

Sega Genesis Club Guidelines

The nominated title should be readily available via standard
channels such as eBay, for a reasonable price (Maximum $30,
preferably less to give the majority of people a chance to join
in). The title should be a licensed Genesis/Megadrive title (No hacks,
homebrew, multicarts). Only exception is unlicensed, but readily available titles.
The title should be available in English, and if not, it should at the very least be
playable without knowledge of Japanese.

Due to the nature of the Club, excessively long or grind-heavy
games such as RPGs will be excluded.

Selection Process (see above for the month of March)
The first week of each month, the selection process for the following
month commences. The first five games suggested that have not
yet been played, and were not nominated the month before will be
added to the list and will be voted on. So be sure to come in early to
nominate your favorites!

On the 7th day of the month, or when we reach five nominations (whichever comes
first) the nominations are tallied in the following manner:
The list of nominees are checked for infringements of the above
guidelines, and any not meeting the requirements are removed.
The voting list will be shuffled for each member voting.
Voting will take place until the 20th day of the month, at which point the poll will
close and the votes will be tallied.
The winner will be announced as soon as the tally is counted so that members
will have time to pick up the winning game.

Thanks to OnPoint for allowing us to use the same guidelines here.

I'm going to nominate Revenge of Shinobi. I've never played it, and I should rectify that immediately.

Also, I just cleaned one of my 3 Button pads using the previously posted video as a guide, and it's SO responsive now! The face buttons are so clicky, makes me want to play some shooters.
