Genesis RGB is such an upgrade.

It's so good it keeps looking amazing even on a consumer Trinitron CRT.

That said, those BVM pics look sexy, Dave, even tho the scanlines look real THICK, in some shots, noticeably darkening the overall picture. Or is it just you, using a less bright/saturated color profile?

it's definitely the iphone camera dimming. the screen is really bright.

the bottom close up shot of sonic looks a bit better in saturation but the screen still brighter in person.

i think the KOF 99 pics i took in the ps1 thread are closer to what it looks like in person.

Mark from CGR knocked it out of the park with the recent "why the genesis is the best console ever" patreon exclusive podcast.

Really great listen for MD fans.

I tallied up the Genesis collection today since I had made quite a few purchases I'm the previous weeks. I'm at 123 games total.

I also have a handful of sega Cd titles, two 32x games, two master system games and another handful of hard to find Saturn titles but I love collecting for the Genesis.

I have 47 boxed games including 3 modern releases and 3 repros. I really would like to eventually get more quality boxed titles in the near future and even try to replace some of my beat up cart only titles.

That sounds awesome. He is one of the best personalities covering the Genesis in recent memory

damn, this is what i get for dragging my nuts on that patreon! i don't really fuck with podcasts but i wanna hear that one

Stunning, really.. The first system I ever hooked up to a PVM was Saturn. I can only imagine BVM quality.

good lord that's dead sexy

I stopped supporting CGR when they broke 10k and gave my five bucks to Lazy Game Reviews instead. But dang, I want to hear that podcast. I might chip back in.

Re CGR podcast.

I just signed up the day before it dropped and so far I don't think they have showed up anywhere else. I mean it's just an mp3 but you really should support Mark if you want to listen to it.

It's marks voice and personality combined with kick ass Sega music and his entire argument for the genesis being the best console ever is "because I said so"

Get on it folks.

Hey guys, how does Castle of Illusion hold up today?
It's one of those games I never had the chance to play, back in the days (quite odd, since it was so popular!), but I could snag a Japanese complete copy for 15 euros. Should I go for it?

It's an amazing early Genesis game that is a must play. I run through it every year.

Edit: Metal Jesus Sega Genesis 11 hidden gems. Watch here

Ex-Mutants
Jewel Master
Blades of Vengeance
Final Zone
Mazin Saga Mutant Fighter
Sub-Terrania
Mystical Fighter
Atomic Runner
Phantom 2040
Wardner
Crue Ball

CGR Undertow ripped Crue Ball but I thinks it's great.

Also Sunday I'll close the voting for March so vote here if you haven't

Sounds good, I'll definitely pick that up. Thanks!

Also, even if I must confess I'm not a huge Metal Jesus fan, I have to say that it's a pretty solid selection from John (wow, first time I see him without his beard... Looks like a completely different dude!). It's not a top 11, though, only a 'hidden gems' list. Favorite of mine is Mazin Saga... Love it, no matter how hard and repetitive it can get. Boss battles are so loud and satisfying!

Not a bad list at all. Glad someone was digging Crue Ball, after Game Sack and CGR were down on it.

Also, totally got the sticker for that game as well. Game is fucking tough though.

You're right! I edited it out, not sure why I put Top 11. Mazin Saga has some smooth animation too.
They really are smooth. To be honest, the whole game's visuals are surprisingly polished - especially for such an obscure license - with very detailed backgrounds and a perfect scrolling, which also boasts some impressive parallax/3D effects during the boss fights.

Blades of Vengeance looks pretty ace too.

Is Crue Ball a good game, then? Honest question, since the physics look all kinds of wonky, judging from the video. I don't know, doesn't the ball seem to fall down way faster than it should?

I'll watch that in a bit. Out of that list I only played: Jewel Master (pretty decent), Sub-Terrania (nice concept but it didn't do much for me, I want to replay it though), Blades of Vengeance (pretty good but gets insanely hard mid-way through), and Phantom 2040 (great idea, but too cryptic for me).

My personal favorite obscure Genesis games:

Ren & Stimpy: Stimpy's Invention
Beyond Oasis
Caliber Fifty
Mercs
Adventures of Batman and Robin
Ghostbusters
Gley Lancer
The Haunting: Starring Polterguy
King of the Monsters 2 (if you like fighting games)
Blaster Master 2 (I've yet to beat this but I thought it was pretty good, but the overhead levels kind of sucked).

I think the physics are fine and haven't had any "that was bullshit" moments. The game is around $5-$10.

My obscure list of 5 would be:

Fatal labyrinth
EXO Squad
Soliders of Fortune
Atomic Runner
Mystic Defender

Yeah, my videogame-pinball experience is pretty limited. It just seemed a little weird, in motion, but the soundtrack... Damn, it's fantastic! One more game to add to the list, apparently. :D

The only game on that list from Metal Jesus that I own is Final Zone. The art is nice but I don't feel like the game play is particularly promising. The game feels kind of like a chore to me but I respect the idea.

My hidden get would have to be Jurassic Park. I know it sold well but for a movie tie in game they really got it right the first time. I'm always skeptical about licensed IPs but the Genesis really has some quality titles in that category which you wouldn't think to look to normally. JP has the right amount of challenge, problem solving, animation and fun for me. The backgrounds are pretty neat and full of colour.

Edit: I also have Sub Terrania from that list

Of those games, Sub-Terrania and Blades of Vengeance are great, A-grade classics and absolutely belong on any underrated Genesis games list. Get both of them, they're fantastic! Atomic Runner is also pretty good and well worth a try. And Ex-Mutants, Wardner and Jewel Master are decently fun games which may be worth a look if you like tough platformers. So yeah, decent mentions for those. And unlike some of his 'hidden gems' lists, those games probably are all actually not well-known games.

Mazin Fighter, however, is awful. The beat 'em up side of the game is okay if below-average stuff, but the 1-on-1 fights are absolutely terrible and ruin the game! That's not a good game.

I don't have Crue Ball, Mystical Fighter, or Final Zone, so I can't say much about those. As for Phantom 2040, I've played it for SNES and it seems average.

So what would I put in a list like this? Hmm...

Sub-Terrania
Adventures of Batman & Robin
Blades of Vengeance
Outrun 2019
Hardball III
Rolling Thunder 2
Universal Soldier
Technoclash
Atomic Runner

And also Mega Turrican if I can get away with calling it under-rated, but that's a bit sketchy I guess.

Vectorman, Shadow Dancer, and Ranger-X are other somewhat popular games I really like and think should rank higher in best-of Genesis lists than they already do.

Maybe I should look into blades of vengeance... Was planning on doing an atomic runner video down the line. Game is so off the wall more people need to try it. Also McDonald's Treasureland.

Obscure games are cool, but there are so many classics that I still want to play first...

Now, it seems that I could get other two games, along with that Castle of Illusion I mentioned a few posts above. World of Illusion and Sonic & Knuckles, both Japanese, complete and in truly beautiful conditions... I'm still bleeding a bit from Gley Lancer, but I feel like I shouldn't really miss the opportunity. Especially S&K seems going up quite alot, and this copy is truly in fantastic shape, coming with registration card and all the posters originally included.

Love Castle of Illusion but World of Illusion is so... blah. S&K is solid though. If you find a copy in the condition you want for a price you're willing to pay, pull the trigger.

My Genesis is back to fully operational!

thechristoph, thanks again for the link to the controller cleaning video. Both of mine are cleaned and working great!

I also fixed the headphone volume issue. I must have taken the top of the case off a long time ago. The slider just wasn't connected to the part on the board, simple fix. Sound coming out of the audio jack is so much better even with my phone earbuds.

All in all, it's back in working condition and I'm happy! The NES is up next with a refurb or new 72 pin adapter I suspect (blinking light).

Castle of Illusion acquired!
And yeah, I'm aware World is not as well-regared as its prequel - didn't imagine it was crap, though - but now I kinda like the idea of having/playing both. Plus, it would allow me to get S&K for a discounted price, which is a nice bonus. :D

Nah World of illusion is a cool game, it's just very easy. It's an easy coop-multiplayer 2D platformer with Mickey and Donald though, so it's a nice game to introduce a kid or a significant other to old-school gaming instead of having them being utterly destroyed playing Shinobi.

i never tried world of illusion only had castle. now that i have a genesis in proximity, i'll try world of illusion.

Sonic games aside, I like the games on that list of mine there as much or more than most of the Genesis's other 'classics'...

It's a pretty good game, yes. I like the somewhat strategic combat, and the good graphics and music and two player co-op are cool as well. It's hard but good!

Well, thanks to you guys, I had to put an order in for Sub-Terrania. It looks like classic cave shooters we played a lot on DOS here - there were numerous shareware ones back in the day. Also a bit Solar Jetman in there with cave physics. Can't wait to try it out.

I was doing the usual cleaning this morning, so I thought to share my Mega Drive collection with you guys. Please forgive the crappy cellphone picture quality!

Threw in my minuscule Mega-CD collection too, as it's still totally not relevant, for the MCD thread.

Love the cover art on japanese titles. Any particular reason to collect just them? My small collection has all kinds, japanese, Megadrive and Genesis games.
