Sega Genesis/MegaDrive Appreciation Thread: Alien Storm > Golden Axe

^ Thanks! ^_-

Love the cover art on japanese titles. Any particular reason to collect just them? My small collection has all kinds, japanese, Megadrive and Genesis games.
Plenty of reasons, actually.
I played my very first Japanese import game on the Mega Drive - ages ago, way before even thinking to start collecting videogames - and I remember I was blown away. Amazing boxarts, beautiful instruction booklets in full color, and - being that game Bare Knuckle II - no censorship either. It was a brand new world, literally unfolding before my eyes. I own a 100% Japanese collection for the Saturn too, and in general a good 50/60% of my retro games comes from Japan.
Another reason is, I mainly play action/arcade games on the MD/MCD, so there is no language barrier to worry about. All in all, if I can and it's worthy (i.e. I wouldn't buy Japanese Comix Zone over the Genesis version, just because it exists), I go for the NTSC-J format.
On top of that, I like to keep my systems unmodded, so I'll start buying Genesis/SEGA CD games once I find a complete, Genesis Game Genie/SEGA CD Pro Action Replay which won't cost me as much as a MD/MCD Japanese game I'm still looking for. :D

Sega Genesis Club Guidelines

The nominated title should be readily available via standard
channels such as eBay, for a reasonable price (Maximum $30,
preferably less to give the majority of people a chance to join
in). The title should be a licensed Genesis/Megadrive title (No hacks,
homebrew, multicarts). Only exception is unlicensed, but readily available titles.
The title should be available in English, and if not, it should at the very least be
playable without knowledge of Japanese.

Due to the nature of the Club, excessively long or grind-heavy
games such as RPGs will be excluded.

Selection Process (see above for the month of March)
The first week of each month, the selection process for the following
month commences. The first five games suggested that have not
yet been played, and were not nominated the month before will be
added to the list and will be voted on. So be sure to come in early to
nominate your favorites!

On the 7th day of the month, or when we reach five nominations (whichever comes
first) the nominations are tallied in the following manner:
The list of nominees are checked for infringements of the above
guidelines, and any not meeting the requirements are removed.
The voting list will be shuffled for each member voting.
Voting will take place until the 20th day of the month, at which point the poll will
close and the votes will be tallied.
The winner will be announced as soon as the tally is counted so that members
will have time to pick up the winning game.

Nice pick! Revenge is my favorite Genesis game and a top 5 of all time across all systems.

I was waiting for my wife to show up for a dinner reservation so I shopped Amazon while having a couple of drinks at the bar. I ended up getting a few games, including Hard Drivin. Probably shouldn't drink Manhattans while retro shopping. But I really liked the game back in the day (more as a pseudo open world crash/mayhem sim than a racing game) and it was only 2 bucks CIB.

I was doing the usual cleaning this morning, so I thought to share my Mega Drive collection with you guys. Please forgive the crappy cellphone picture quality!

Tight collection! Looks stellar.

Nice pick for the club. I only have about 10 Genesis games but that's one of them. And I just got my RGB setup completed! Woot.

Awesome, my choice won!! Been itching to play thos ever since I nominated it, but I held out. I'll start this up later tonight with a nice cold beer, and I'll be sure to post my impressions!

And the beauty of having a Everdrive is that I can play the first revision with Batman, Godzilla, etc...

What, a game I no death last year on the hardest setting(and beaten for the 1st time last year as well)? Well, I should replay it again for fun since it's easily one of the best games on Genesis, plus dat soundtrack.

Can't really say it was a fair fight with this fantastic game on the list, but what a way to start! We might want to try to stay relatively more obscure on the next volley, the platform is full of incredibly underrated games.

Well, I'll try to get started tonight! Loving the idea of sitting down with Shinobi and a good beer. :D

I am not a big fan of Revenge of Shinobi. I don't think it's bad but it just doesn't do it for me like Shinobi 3 (which was my introduction to the series).

If you accept that beyond the superficial gameplay similarities, the games are very different but equally excellent, you'll have a greater appreciation for it.

That, and it was made five years earlier.

To me, Shinobi 3 got a bit worse towards the end(not a huge fan of that platforming section), but overall still one of the best Genesis games.

Proper gunter with this and your recent post about a batman no death play through. Impressive; no way I have the skills, or patience, to pull one of those off.

The Chuck Norris of Peace
Castle of Illusion acquired!
And yeah, I'm aware World is not as well-regared as its prequel - didn't imagine it was crap, though - but now I kinda like the idea of having/playing both. Plus, it would allow me to get S&K for a discounted price, which is a nice bonus. :D

I always preferred World to Castle back in the day because of its two-player mode. Used to play it a ton with friends, so yeah, I think you will have fun.

wow, Last Battle got some votes. that's awesome!

well, i just played revenge of shinobi this week, bc i was testing out my genesis scart on the BVM. so i don't mind giving it another go.

i liked super/revenge bc though it had cameos that were over the top i still felt overall, the game's identity was in character w/ the arcade bosses and levels.

i don't think surfing is a character of ninja. that's where i gotta give the edge to revenge.

Jake from State Farm and Timu, i picked this up today on the way home:

Timu, if happen to get it down the road we can all join in hell trying to beat it =)

damn, Galdelico - ya'll just got better box art than us on most of those, looks so good!
Thanks guys, really glad to see you enjoyed it!

That sounds good! And coop was exactly what grabbed me in, along with the game's artstyle (which seems quite different from Castle's), and the sense of scale of its backgrounds. Looking forward to try them out.

I made it to the military base in Shinobi before getting beat up pretty good. I didn't have time to continue so only used one set of lives. I don't remember really any of this game, lol. It's fun though.

Over 6 months of training and 50 some serious attempts in a week can do that for me with Batman...and it was a pain to do. The Revenge of Shinobi only took me a month to do after I beat it, lol.

Starting to get into Atomic Runner. Was this the first example of an Endless Runner game? This is pretty obscure but I'll make a bet that there was something that was even more obscure that predates this.

The control scheme is really bizarre but can be configured to be slightly less bizarre. Basically the game is an endless runner but you can fire to your left or right (via assigning buttons to fire left or right or assigning one button to fire in a specific direction) and jump. It takes a long while to get used to but the game is fun and gives you plenty of lives and continues. Also you can jump on enemies to kill them which lessens the difficulty.

Threw in my minuscule Mega-CD collection too, as it's still totally not relevant, for the MCD thread.
Awesome. You even have many of the ultra-expensive Japanese Konami Mega Drive games I will never ever get :(

Japan is the winner for Mega Drive.

Alright, so I got a chance to play a bit of Revenge of Shinobi, but before hand, I cleaned my original Genesis pad:

XMLuiEB.jpg

Looking great! The only cosmetic issues are a slight bit of wear on the cable, and a little bit of missing red from the B button. Unfortunately, the D-Pad feels very slippery. I kept accidentally hitting left or right when holding down, so after the first couple of levels, I switched to my other pad.

Also pictured is Citradelic - Single Hop Citra IPA from Big Rock brewery. The beer was delicious and the game was amazing, though EXTREMELY hard for a newbie. With no manual, I had to learn things as I went: for example, I didn't realize you could double jump until I reached the first boss! I also didn't realize you could block enemy projectiles until I reached the second stage (Where I dies the most, stupid enemies knocking me off waterfalls).

9VJpOfn.jpg

EXTREME CLOSEUP! Damn, the Genesis looks great through the XRGB.

Anyway, I made it to the third stage, where I kept getting sucked out of the doors of a boat (submarine?), before I lost all my continues. I was playing on Normal difficulty, with the default number of Shirukens. I honestly never ran out of them, so I don't feel like I'll need to up that number, though I might play on Easy a bit next time so I can hone my skills.

Anyone got any tips for a newbie?

I'm hoping most here can beat it for that matter.=p

Conserve shirukens.

Use magic.

Use POW.

Learn about bumping into enemies.

Don't die.

I just beat Jurassic Park today. Great little game. Awesome animation and solid use of the license. I loved the weapon variety, puzzles and colours in this one.

I picked up Herzog Zwei this weekend. Very neat title. Looking forward to digging deep into that one.

I'll be playing Shinobi next though for sure. Good to see. I wouldn't have minded Last Battle or Phelios as well.

oh wow, the cart label is so plain...

There are a few white ones. Off the top of my head Wings of Wor and Fire Shark are also boring white labels.

Be sure to tell us what you think when you've played it a bit!

Anyways, Im going to join on Shinobi-month. Just completed Red Dead Redemption on the 360, but looking forward to going back to the 80s again.

If you put it on easy, you get 9 lives to start.

If you go into the options and set shurikens to 00 and wait 10 seconds it will turn into an infinity symbol. This will allow you to use the double jump attack as much as you want.

Learn to use ninja magic. There are many levels where it will be a lot easier using the right type. For the stage you got stuck on, the shield will allow you to take hits without getting knocked into open doors.

In a pinch, the exploding magic can be handysince it refills your life bar (at the cost of a life) so you don't have to restart a stage. This is also a way to cheese some of the tougher bosses.

Keep an eye out for the hidden powerups, they give you twice the normal amount. There are a couple of places that you can grind to build up as many extra lives as you want.

I've never seen the boxart for Gleylancer before, it's awesome!

If you haven't before, browsing http://segaretro.org/ for Mega Drive covers is pretty great! They have nicely scanned high resolution images of mostly everything. It's a paradise of these beautiful Japanese wraparound artwork covers. :)

Nice work! It came out extremely clean at the end, it looks pretty much mint. Shame about the d-pad. A tip of the hat for the great evening with Shinobi, too.

Ninja Step with that sub is going to be awesome.

BTails speakers too, well once you get good enough to get that far :p

you'll make it, just try to remember enemy placement and dont rush things
.

EDIT: Isnt Target Earth part of the Assault Suits series? Also were we doing nominations for April already?

Also were we doing nominations for April already?

I figured this way we would let the voting go until March 31. Instead of he week we gave the March pick & get on a monthly schedule. But since no one has nominated anything we can do it halfway through March? I don't really care I'm just trying to keep it consistent.

Great collection! I'm all about the CIB Japanese Mega Drive games. I love their box art, and they are still very affordable outside of some of the Konami and later Sega stuff. They are typically in amazing shape when you buy them, too. Gamers in Japan seemed to take care of their stuff when they were kids...

Yeah. That, or they could just foresee the future. :D

I'm quite a picky collector, as in - when I buy anything which isn't brand new - I only go for complete copies, with all the collectible frills they originally included... Spine cards for CD based games, posters/stickers/extra goodies (say, the movelist leaflet in Bare Knuckle III), etc. Well, it truly is unbelievable how many of those MD games still came with their own registration cards and SEGA catalogues, on top of all the other stuff. I actually have more trouble today, to track down games in similar conditions, even straight from Japan.

And unfortunately, plenty of mid-tier games are going up in price as well.
Aside from maybe a couple of titles, my collection isn't anything outstanding, yet so many games I bought a few years ago for less than 40/50 euros, are now creeping around twice the amount. It genuinely surprised me to learn (in relatively recent times) how much more expensive titles such as Bare Knuckle III, Alisia Dragoon, Contra or Musha became.
Oh, and the fact I still want stuff like Vampire Killer, Alien Soldier, Return of the Shredder and Ristar, makes me wish there was a 'retro' buy/sell thread, here on GAF... Ebay is full of monsters. T_T
