Sega Genesis/MegaDrive Appreciation Thread: Alien Storm > Golden Axe

What's wrong with having Mercs? I don't think it's as known as Shinobi, Sonic, Streets of Rage, Phantasy Star, etc.

Nothing wrong with it - it's just genny elite so we're really not putting games of similar tiers to a vote. We should run through the elite games as a whole and then move on to lesser games to give those lesser games a chance to be picked in an equal playing field.

I actually didnt know Wonder Boy was never released in NA, wouldnt have suggested it if I knew. I own the Pal-version of it.

Hey guys, opinions on the Saitek Megapad X controller (apparently, this comes with a microswitched d-pad)? Is anyone rocking one of those? I'm looking for a couple of extra controllers for my MD2 - it doesn't really matter they aren't SEGA, until they're solid and work well - and I could buy them near my area, which makes the deal even more convenient.

Hey guys, I have been looking for this specific and obscure page out of Electronic Gaming Monthly for a long time.

Showing Sega's R-360 and Taito's D3-BOS motion arcade cabinets.

Thunder Force fans might remember this page, too. Thunder Force AC compared to Genesis Thunder Force III.

To be fair Mega Man 3 was recently put up in the nes thread, and it lost to Guardian Legend.

Just beat Atomic Runner. I really liked it. It's a shame that the controls are the way they are and you have to explain -as you recommend the game- that it has weird controls. But it has weird controls... The most annoying thing is trying to jump and fire. If you want to fire in a stationary direction, you have to jump and then move with your D-Pad. But, if you move while jumping, your character will spin around in a wildly inaccurate somersault.

Aside from that, it's a fun and unique run and gun title that's somewhat easy. Not quite up there with Gunstar Heroes, Alien Soldier, Contra: Hardcorps, Adventures of Batman and Robin, or Robocop VS The Terminator. But pretty close.

The only thing I greatly disliked was phase 2 for the final boss. That part was infuriating because you should be able to jump onto the boss's staff but sometimes this works and sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes the boss raises the staff and you can jump onto it to avoid being crushed. And sometimes the boss doesn't. Sometimes the boss will walk right into the corner and crush you. And sometimes he doesn't... Totally random.

Otherwise, great game. Cult classic.

That game should be nominated one day.

Guess I'll have to jump into playing Shinobi asap; been pretty busy playing Twilight Princess at the moment. Really enjoyed playing Shinobi 3 on 3DS last summer, but it's been awhile since playing Revenge.

Alright, so I got a chance to play a bit of Revenge of Shinobi, but before hand, I cleaned my original Genesis pad:

XMLuiEB.jpg

Looking great! The only cosmetic issues are a slight bit of wear on the cable, and a little bit of missing red from the B button. Unfortunately, the D-Pad feels very slippery. I kept accidentally hitting left or right when holding down, so after the first couple of levels, I switched to my other pad.

Also pictured is Citradelic - Single Hop Citra IPA from Big Rock brewery. The beer was delicious and the game was amazing, though EXTREMELY hard for a newbie. With no manual, I had to learn things as I went: for example, I didn't realize you could double jump until I reached the first boss! I also didn't realize you could block enemy projectiles until I reached the second stage (Where I dies the most, stupid enemies knocking me off waterfalls).

EXTREME CLOSEUP! Damn, the Genesis looks great through the XRGB.

Anyway, I made it to the third stage, where I kept getting sucked out of the doors of a boat (submarine?), before I lost all my continues. I was playing on Normal difficulty, with the default number of Shirukens. I honestly never ran out of them, so I don't feel like I'll need to up that number, though I might play on Easy a bit next time so I can hone my skills.

Anyone got any tips for a newbie?

Awesome posts on Revenge of Shinobi, guys.

Easily my favorite Shinobi game, especially the music, and for the time in my life when I bought the game in June, 1990. My dad wasn't really interested in videogames and it took a lot to impress him. The intro cutscene there, he was actually pretty impressed when I showed him, with the sound cranked up and playing through *his* stereo system in the family room.

I don't have much else to contribute, other than this, EGM's two page spread from issue #6 - January 1990.

I played Shadow Dancer and Shinobi III a lot back in the day, but I never really played Revenge of Shinobi. Is it me or is this game really stiff feeling? I feel like I have no ability to finesse any of my movement. It's like "the airtime of a jump is 3.5 seconds long and dammit, whether you hit a ceiling or not, you're going to be in the air for 3.5 seconds".

Still, it's Shinobi, and it's rad.

It does feel stiff compared to Shadow Dancer with its plane switching and Shinobi III with all its different input techs, but once you get used to the controls and timing, you should be good.

Game Genie and Sub-Terrania arrived today. The latter was a pick up based on that MetalJesusRocks vid posted earlier so hope it holds up :). Shame the label's a bit busted.

The former was actually so my girlfriend could play Turrican after I got her a cart for Christmas and it said it was a Genesis game. Turns out, it wasn't!

^ Are you using an European Mega Drive Game Genie on a Genesis?
Do you know if the same would work for me too, with a Japanese MD2, in order to play Genesis games?

How far is everyone into Revenge of Shinobi?

I made it to the high rise level. I need to sit down with it again this weekend to try to blast through it. I hadn't made it that far before but I had to do a few other things that night so I cut it short. Good to get back into it.

nearly 100% of Revenge hinges on how well you get down the double jump, i think - i honestly can't remember the last time i played without infinite shurikens too, haha. oh and stages like the waterfall/etc early on are important for getting you used to exactly where your range of jump is, even with fushin (sp?) - everyone knocks the cool-music-having late stage with the water-ninjas cause of that very problem

i got to restart but i think i can beat Revenge this weekend.

was playing Target Earth
i just had a battle entering the atmosphere and had to board a shuttle or risk being burnt up.
finally got to the next stage.

also has a cute girl that secretly gives you extra continues if you select game level and hit start in the options menu:

I haven't had a chance to play since I got to the military base on my first life (not very far). I plan on playing some this weekend.

I watched some videos online (haven't watched your no death one yet) but I realized I am playing retro games wrong. I was trying to kill everyone as opposed to trying to stay alive and get to the end of the level, lol. I've become used to leveling up and all that. Subtle difference but definitely changes my approach.

Yep, it's about progression and making it through, not collecting experience and seeking trophies for numbers of enemies killed!

Been busy, so I'll probably give Revenge a play through this weekend. Its a game a replay on a regular basis, so shouldn't be too tough...I'll probably play through on Normal, though. I'd need to practice up a bit to do the hardest difficulty. (i'll be using my Mega Everdrive, because otherwise I'd have to pull out my sega cd which I don't currently have hooked up.)

lol, the Continue Up girl sure is a looker.

for shinobi, the hardest time i remember having as a kid was on top of the train. i just couldn't time the jumps for my life.

I never really bothered to learn the timing/patterns. There's a hidden ninja magic powerup in the previous level (Chinatown) so I use the shield magic on the first part of the level and you will still have magic to use on Spiderman/Batman.

I'm in the process of prepping my house to sell, so I haven't had anytime to play anything. Honestly surprised I had the time to do the game of the month post.
that's sounds busy =O

i haven't got to it yet but i have some bad memories of it. i guess its time to use the shield

The train was easy yo!!!
i don't know why, i had a hard time with it back in the day. i'll see if it's any easier now.

Target Earth is tough, i'm at the 4th board. you start from the sky drop to the surface teammate blows a hole for you to go underground. at the bottom is a core reactor that you have to blow. it took me so long to finally get there and i died. have to start all the way from the beginning of the stage. man this game doesn't do any favors. but i got to see the Continue UP Girl. lol

Any list with the must have games? I just bought a Genesis and need a few recommendations!

ALL OF THEM.

Just kidding. You'll get there one day. Some good commons to start are the Sonic games, Jurassic Park is great, the Shinobi series is great. Altered Beast is a good start. There are some solid Capcom arcade games like Mercs, Forgotten Worlds, Ghouls and Ghosts and Strider.

Hopefully you like SHUMPS - Thunder Force series is great, Truxton, Steel Empire, Fire Shark are great.

RPGS - Phantasy Star series, Shining Force series, Landstalker, Beyond Oasis

There are also some good co-op shooters like Gunstar Heroes and Contra: Hard Corps

cult hits: Ranger X, Sub Terrainia, Wolf Child.

There's even a Castlevania game.

Good list to start...

Do you guys know if this Japanese version of Slam Masters is official or some kind of repro?

I keep reading it got a proper release in EU and US only, but that seems pretty legit, and according to the seller, it even comes with the usual CAPCOM promotional stuff inside the box. What worries me is the title. It should be Muscle Bomber (just like the Super Famicom port), not Slam Masters. Oh and the price too... 60 euros, which seems a little bit too cheap for such an apparently rare game.

Thanks man. ^_-
Ugh... So sad to find out this kind of crap listed and sold along with original games, with no indications at all, in a supposedly 'retrogame-collectors-proof' store.

Edit - And here goes the night...
