Sega Genesis/MegaDrive Appreciation Thread: Alien Storm > Golden Axe

my thunder force III cart came... the game is a bit easy compared to II

It is a very good port. What probably sweetened the deal was the fact that Sega ported the game themselves. Same applies to Forgotten Worlds and Strider.

Super Ghouls N' Ghosts in the best of the Ghouls/Ghosts N' Goblins series tho.
maybe it was the slowdown or the lack of being able to shoot up?

Sega made ghouls n' ghost so smoooooth. i liked it better. well, my opinion doesn't really count.... i could never beat these games.

Super Ghouls N' Ghosts -while suffering from slowdown- is the most unique entry in the series. After the first level the game does change things up significantly when compared to other entries. Plus it has a double jump and the ability to gain additional powerups that give you a super attack and allow you to get hit -drum roll- 3 TIMES before dying.

The Master System version is interesting because it's a little bit easier and incorporates an RPG system. Otherwise it's the same game as the Genesis port.

Im with you on this. Although I can logically see that SGnG is the better game. There is just something intangible about the Genesis version that puts it over for me.

Nostalgia perhaps, I just love everything about the Genesis version. It's my favorite of all the GnG games. (Including the arcade versions)

Nice, I saw when you posted this and thought I had to get around to picking it up as well. Happen to come across a cib in decent condition at a local mom n pop. Not as cheap, paid $5 for my copy.

Really surprised at how good the port looks. It really looks and plays great.

It's one of the best looking 16-bit ports of an arcade fighter for sure. But it accomplishes this by having less unique animations and just repeating the same ones at different speeds, which ultimately affects the gameplay.

Yeah, I have the NeoGeo version on my Wii and it does play better. The Genesis version is good, but the moves seem a bit off. Or maybe I just suck at the game :)

Today's pickup...

Look at that big fat cartridge! Never had this back in the day because of the high $90 price tag. Now I got it for $3.49. Good to know not all games are going for grossly exaggerated Ebay scalper prices. Punisher, I'm looking at you...

One of the most obvious examples of the animation compromise is that Haohmaru has light stab/thrust attacks and stuff in the original, but in the Genesis version it's just sword slashes that are faster.

oh, there's RPG elements in master system? cool! i need to read up on that.

the water weapon looked so cool when it first came to the genesis, i later saw it in the arcade and said wow! this game looks like the genesis.

and there was the huge fuss over snes 3.58 mhz slow down so maybe that affected my bias back then and stuck w me.

"blast processing" hahaha

I don't think there's any, like, "mystical quality" involved - Ghouls 'n Ghosts is just flat-out a better game. It's significantly faster-paced, the levels are denser and have less empty space than Super's, the game spends less time on totally static platforming challenges like Super (which makes Ghouls more replayable), and it's more intense (the removal of directional aiming is a massive loss for Super, and meant that enemy density had to be cut down by a lot). Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts is a really good game, but it's not better than Ghouls 'n Ghosts in any way.

I loved the CD version back when I was in college. The surround sound and FMV were amazing at the time, especially under the "enhancement" of certain substances.

I love the Sega Cd version of The Terminator. Definitely one of my favourite games of that era and the penultimate version of the game.

TBH, i was shocked that Ghouls and Ghost came out for Genesis,
i really thought nintendo had a stranglehold on capcom.

though super ghouls n' ghost came out for the snes a year later...

that game was great.

I think the Genesis version is a perfect port. I have problems with the slowdown in the SNES version. I didn't think they got it right again until the GBA version or the PSP version which was also great to me.

I stand corrected :0

In truth it's been a while since I played SGnG. I remember my friends hyping up all the reasons it was better. All I remember is green armour and double jumps lol.

If anything the slowdown is a feature in Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts. It definitely helps you in certain situations. Same with certain Shmup titles.

Yuji Naka ported Ghouls and Ghosts to the Megadrive. That engine was improved and was used for Sonic the Hedgehog. Now when you Play the Megadrive version you'll see how it was used to become Sonic.

Interesting. I've got to get a hold of this one. And SGnG, too. Sounds like both are worth having. As has been pointed out by people like Jeremy Parish, GnG was Capcom's biggest franchise through the 1980s. Mega Man and Street Fighter didn't take off until 90-91.

Heh, if you think it's impressive from the outside, you should try opening it up!

I beat Revenge of Shinobi today for the first time. Great title. I really enjoyed it. I have the other ones and I'm looking forward to next months game!

I might start to tackle Phantasy Star 2 for an rpg fix. I've only really given time to the Shining Force series as far as Sega rpgs go.

And I just beat Ghouls 'n Ghosts on Genesis again. I didn't realize that it had infinite continues on Professional difficulty. That was good to know. Great port as opposed to some poor sound effects. I'm not beating it again to get the true final ending. Fuck that. To quote the AVGN: "It's like, you know what? Fuck you. I beat the game."

Yeah, the last boss is really impressive and worth playing through to see. I was looking at Aliexpress at a repro of the game. I'm assuming these are cheap Chinese crap?

It's almost playoff time, so I picked up the OG of hockey games. Still pretty fun, even though my beloved North Stars are woefully underpowered. The other pics are some other early EA Genesis games taken from the manual, back when EA actually included manuals with their games.

VOTE HERE!!

I plan on doing a mid-month voting reminder for those that don't frequent the board. Do you guys want an update on the results halfway through, or just wait till the end?

That is a great idea to post those who complete it. I voted already for this month. Looking forward to it. I only own 1/5 this time around, so it might be a good chance to expand my collection a bit.

I was also thinking if people post that they completed the monthly game, I'll post it in the end of the month summary. A list at the end could be cool.

i'm on board w/ both suggestions. i think it'll be cool to see an end of the month summary. though i voted early, good thing you reminded me about next months games, i forgot the choices.

Cannot beat the first boss in Revenge. Gonna have to bow out until next month. Feels lame but I have always been shit at Shinobi's particular type of action.

I did that last night too. I hadn't played it through before. But no way I beat it "twice"

That has to be easier. I also saw that you can jump toward him to make him swing? I've been crouching down and duck walking to get him to swing, which makes it hard as hell to jump and shoot his head.

Get Pow in the room just before the boss, hopefully have the shield and let the boss have it as you can kill the boss faster with Pow.

Here's a gif I made from my no death run of it.

did you beat the 1st boss yet?

Just did. Had to use the double jump throwing stars. Felt cheap but got the job done. I just couldn't get a feel for making him swing. The gif posted earlier just doesn't line up with my experience. Still feels like I have to get so much closer.

Got to level 3. Really tough - tons of shit happening at once. I like the background/foreground mechanic, though.

honestly, i use the double jump most of the time. the timing is actually pretty clunky compared to the original arcade gameplay this is giving homage to.
