VG&CE December 1989 spread on Altered Beast:

COORDINATE
NO NUKES

-A message for the times back then?

Edit:

http://opcfg.kontek.net/archive/abeastoddities.html
Also from Dan: a plausible idea as to where the "No Nukes" message may have come from:

1988 (when Altered Beast was in development) was the year when Japan and Korea saw a boom in 'No Nukes' associations, organisations and foundations against nuclear power and weapons (Fujimi most memorable). Maybe in the credits the coders are showing their support to the anti nuke movement at that time. As good a guess as any :)

Yessssss! I love Altered Beast so much. That's an awesome spread, it would've got me so pumped back in the day.

So, I finally got a chance to play some ESWAT today:

This is a pretty sweet game. I like the music, and the digital sound clips ("Mission complete!") are really clear for such an early Genesis game. It took me a little while to get used to the suit once you receive it in Level 3... Not to mention that the first part of Level 3 is insanely difficult for some reason!!

I made it almost to the end of Level 5 before getting game over. Not bad for the first time I've picked up the game. I think a few portions will be a lot easier the second time through, like the beginning of Stage 3, and the cheap deaths in stage 4 with all the goo sections.

I'll probably get some more play time in this weekend, maybe even get to the end!

So, I just found out that there are like 7 different variations of the original Model 1.

...and the one that I had growing up (and still own) is apparently the worst one (the VA7). Guess I'm weird, because I like the sound quality on it.

Anyways, bought me my first six-button controller and a A/V output cable to record video and better quality overall (still waiting on that last one to arrive in the mail). My original controller is finally shot and the only thing that works on it is the C-button. The new controller is great, but ironically, the C-button on that controller is the only one that has some minor issues with it. It kinda gets stuck here if I rapidly press on it, which shouldn't be a problem unless I want to play a game like Ecco or something where I need that boost in speed. But other than that, I like the controller outside of the placement of the start button, it's throwing me off from where it was on the original three-button controller lol.

I'm going to try to pick up a Mega Everdrive sometime soon. It seems like a sweet deal.

i just got home 30 minutes ago 12:30am EST..... super long meeting today at work. at least i got a huge raise from new job to buy some more retro games.

ah going to relax and play some shooters. Thunder Force II hits the spot before K.O. ing =)

Asked about this earlier, but where is it recommended to buy extender cables from? Raphnet doesnt seem to have them in stock.

TBH I think it might be just bad "Engrish" translation than a message. It's been a while since I've beaten the game (I got to level 5 a week or so ago) but IIRC a lot of the names in the credits are misspelled or weird ("coordinate" is supposed to be "coordinator") as was the case in a lot of early Genesis games.

I found a good deal online on a boxed Ghouls N Ghosts, but I think it might be too good and actually a repro. Oh well. As long as the game works, I won't care too much. I also got Ghostbusters because it's one of my wife's favorite movies and I think she will like playing it and Rambo III, which I remember being great (the digitized title screens blew my mind back in the day) but probably hasn't aged well.

Probably will get an Everdrive soon because I don't have much space left to store any more games.

I got a promotion, raise and bonus too. Congrats! Got a few of my recent buys delivered this week.

Got Superman CIB, Alisia Dragoon CIB and Lost World with box but no manual.

Also slightly related, got Dune on Sega CD.

Gonna try to tackle more eswat this weekend. Gotta beat that sewer level asap

As I mentioned earlier it's one of my favourite gaming purchases. While I prefer to use original cartridges as well (and they're right on my shelf), lessening the wear and tear on the cartridge slot is the main boon for me personally. Your mileage may vary but the convenience factor combined with less fiddling make it a fantastic purchase IMO.
Thank you, and to everyone who replied too. ^_-
Yeah, it looks like a very cool item, great value for the money it usually goes for.

Even more if what I just read about a particular model called 'Mega Driver' is true: apparently, that specific flash cart is able to work as a multiregion adapter for the Mega Drive, and as a bios-loader for the Mega-CD. Anyone can confirm that? So far, I only found general reviews that mostly cover the main topics (ROMS, compatibility issues...).

You can use krikzz's everdrive to region switch Sega CD. I would avoid imitators.

Oh shit I forgot about that and I even got a Sega CD a couple months ago, lol.

I like my Sega CD, but I don't like how big it is. I have a Model 1 Genesis but the local place had a decent price on a Model 2 Sega CD. I heard that the Model 1 trays are kinda finicky anyway, so I bought the Model 2, but the width is dumb and the combo doesn't really fit my old game setup (those Ikea cubes) without rotating the whole thing sideways.

What about getting a Megadrive 2? These two were meant for each other.

Awesome, thanks! Is the 'Everdrive MD v3' - the one that goes for 87$ - the model I should go for, right? Sorry, I still have little to no clues about Everdrive carts.
Guess it's all good to place an order from Europe.

I'm mixing up hardware differences, yeah. It was audio quality I was worried about with the Model 2, but I don't know enough about the finer differences to know if it'd be all that noticeable to me. Either way, I think the Model 2 + CD would still be too wide :(

Just finished my usual biweekly Bare Knuckle III playthrough... I love this game so much, definitely my favourite beat'em up on the system, and up there with my all-time most beloved ones in general. The way the action flows throughout the whole game, the sheer amount of stuff it throws at you on hard/very hard, its moveset, pace and variety in the backgrounds/enemy types... And that good ending sequence too. <3

I'm wasn't a backer (didn't know about it at the time) but I am interested to see reviews when they come out, for SNES and Genesis.

Yeah, neither was I but I plan on grabbing these when they become available; I'll definitely post impressions when I do.

Im thinking about playing another RPG side by side with Shining in the Darkness, since it doesnt have much story to get involved in.

Getting in good with Eswat. Really surprised how clear the voice samples are as well.

How is Shining in the Darkness, Teknoman? I got Shining Force III and Holy Ark on Saturn; is it recommended I play through the Genesis Shining games before Saturn? Cheers.

No graph paper? Going for the hard mode of making your own dungeon crawler maps?

I'd at least play through starting with Shining Force 1. I think In the Darkness up to III are the ones that are connected universe wise? Shining in the Darkness is ok for what it is, but its not something i'd recommend to everyone. I'm sticking with it because im still curious about the series' beginnings.

that's how you do a map! i didn't have access to graph paper either in the day, and that looks great

Yeah no graph paper, i've got two giant notebooks that were just laying around, started making a game hint/progress log back in...2013 I think? Its kinda fun, but when it comes to maps...I suck at drawing things to scale. So I figured graph paper would put me more at a disadvantage.

Cool, sounds good. I'm just waiting to dig deeper into some of the longer Genesis games I have as I'm waiting on these component cables; currently using composite like a pleb, lol.

I think Darkness is kinda short compared to other Genesis RPGs, but the need to grind and map out your surroundings has an effect.

Will these component cables just be sold on their own site or others is what I'm wondering about. I already have an RGB cable for my Genesis but an alternative wouldn't hurt.

Never knew Sega had anything to do with the coin-op arcade version. Thought it was just Kaneko and distributed by another co. in NA.

DJ Boy (DJボーイ) is a 1989 beat 'em up arcade game developed by Kaneko. It was published in Japan by Kaneko and in North America by Sammy.

Weird, no screenshots on the back cover of the Genesis version and just 1 on the Japanese MD version.
