Sega Genesis/MegaDrive Appreciation Thread: Alien Storm > Golden Axe

I agree, a well curated or thematic collection is much more interesting. There is no reason to get everything, unless you are an actual museum open to the public.

I think its more of a "bragging rights" kinda thing. That "gotta catch em all" mentality.

As someone in the hunt for complete sets, i have always made an effort to play everything i own, and appreciate what i have. To be fair, i don't generally buy sports games (Exception for stuff like Sega CD and 32X where there are very few).

I do get that it is a "Catch 'em all" mentality, but i think saying its going "full retard" is ridiculous.

So something tells me I should play Streets of Rage 2 Except It Makes That Weird Tim Allen Noise When People Die.

yeah, i admittedly wanna try this, there's so very many SOR mods as it is but im down!

Collecting every game is so douchey.

i try not to judge & wouldn't go right to insults as you do, but it's one corner of collecting that i don't personally get, yeah
on my own subjective scale, sealed game collecting is the only one that bothers me on an existential level

this'd be cool to see, but only if they're all playable! again, personally, having a mega everdrive killed me from picking up/trying out a lotta C tier and below stuff, honestly

yeah, for me i will say it's cool when someone who has access to an entire library not only plays em all, but shares the experience, as you do

I like to know why too. I mean, if somebody finds joy in that... not like they're doing any harm with it.

I'm always hearing a lot of arguments on here about the importance of preservation (typically in other contexts, such as piracy, but let's not go there).

Now here are people who actually do preserve entire console libraries, and then they are douchebags?

This is me. Seems so meaningless to collect sealed games - especially considering how many people out there who would love to play them.

March Game of the Month
April Game of the Month

One month cool down on the following games

*Flashback: The Quest for Identity
*Sub Terrania
*EXO Squad
*James Bond 007 The Duel

1. Thunder Force II
2.
3.
4.
5.

Sega Genesis Club Guidelines

The nominated title should be readily available via standard
channels such as eBay, for a reasonable price (Maximum $30,
preferably less to give the majority of people a chance to join
in). The title should be a licensed Genesis/Megadrive title (No hacks,
homebrew, multicarts). Only exception is unlicensed, but readily available titles.
The title should be available in English, and if not, it should at the very least be
playable without knowledge of Japanese.

Due to the nature of the Club, excessively long or grind-heavy
games such as RPGs will be excluded.

Selection Process (see above)
The first week of each month, the selection process for the following
month commences. The first five games suggested that have not
yet been played, and were not nominated the month before will be
added to the list and will be voted on. So be sure to come in early to
nominate your favorites!

On the 7th day of the month, or when we reach five nominations (whichever comes
first) the nominations are tallied in the following manner:
The list of nominees are checked for infringements of the above
guidelines, and any not meeting the requirements are removed.
The voting list will be shuffled for each member voting.
Voting will take place until the 20th day of the month, at which point the poll will
close and the votes will be tallied.
The winner will be announced as soon as the tally is counted so that members
will have time to pick up the winning game.

It's an OCD thing, I think. I'm not a sealed collector, but I got a couple of games that I cannot seem to open.

E.g. Class of Heroes 2G has a sticker with a serial number on the seal. I want to keep that sticker, but breaking the seal would mean keeping the sticker becomes a messy thing. So I just keep it sealed.

I also never opened my copy of Elminage Original. I've played the digital copy of the game (came with a download code). It's not that good, not worth opening the game. The sealed copy is sort of a showpiece now more than anything else. I could sell it, I guess, so that someone else can play it. But it's widely available digitally anyway. And I also like owning it as a curiosum.

shit yeah!! several of the favorites i named in the OP have made it, love Alien Storm. another one i'll beat with a quickness!

ProTip: treat it like Golden Axe, pick the dwarf robot. beat it on easy to learn stuff, master the run + overhead shot (it's powerful, and you need it for so many bosses), then try the harder difficulties!
also, first person stages have lots of health/energy hidden, so

Always
Be
Shooting

Cool, will try and throw down on some Alien Storm this weekend. Always thought it was an under rated game because of the comparisons to Golden Axe.

So...lets just say I manage to beat the game today...that list gets redone right :p

That being said, hell yeah Alien Storm!

Gonna get my nomination in early:

Damn it...community boosted Alisia Dragoon more than 30 bucks.

In that case... Thunder Force II

Everyone talks about Thunder Force III and IV with V as a distant extra note (its still great), but no one really has anything to say about II. I remember a few GAF wanting to give it a shot some time ago, so why not now?

Thunder Force II is dope, that was the first game I bought when I bought the Genesis at launch. I remember calling 800 USA SEGA for tips on the part where it speeds up insanely fast. I only beat the game once. The voice samples when you get power ups are still in my head to this day. Why did all the early stuff sound like Elmer Fudd?

Yes, I will add anyone that finishes the game. I did this early because I'm busy this weekend.

Because it has the overhead sections, people easily dismiss it.

I know this is more of a collecting-focused thread, but just wanna mention here that the recently-updated Genesis Classics hub on Steam is incredible and will likely be eating up a lot of my time in the coming weeks.

The easy distribution of mods/romhacks through Steam workshop is something awesome for any Genesis fan and I've already found a few favorites. It's also going to be great for stuff like easily distributing translation and bugfix patches for a lot of classic Genesis games.

Would highly recommend checking it out!

Its cool for any news related to Sega Genesis / Mega Drive imo.

Man, been so busy with life I never even touched the copy of E-SWAT I bought, lol. Not sure I should even attempt Alien Storm.

Collecting every game is so douchey.

I mean, I'd never go for a complete collection myself, but this comment seems out of place in a hardcore collecting thread on a hardcore video game enthusiast forum...

yeah man thunder force II is where it's at!

Hell yeah Alien Storm! I'm always up for replaying this again. Hell, i'm gonna do one better and beat both this and the arcade version this month! (I'll be at Galloping Ghost at the end of May)

One of those Sega games i didn't discover until the 360 collection, but i've been in love with it ever since.

Great post. I was hoping for subterrania, I really like that game but I also have alien storm so I will give that a shot. I didn't like what I did play initially but your post has made it look interesting.

I will try to beat eswat tonight to squeak that one in for the end of the month. Stupid sewer level.

Pickings were slim at the local retro game store, but Renovation releases are usually worth snagging. I promise I will give this a better home than the seemingly abusive and neglectful relationship it was in before.

Wow, it definitely can only go up from here. Anyways, I just bought the 3-in-1 cart with Alien Storm, Super Monaco GP and Thunder Blade for next months game. Ive played all of them before, but its been a while, so really looking forward to that!

Just went through the Arcade version of Alien Storm, took about 14 credits going solo. Next time I'll convince my wife to play. Im still waiting to pick this up on the Genesis but the difficulty really ramped up in Stage 6. Coop definitely would have helped and that ending was pretty great.

The other better be Alien Storm so i can continue to talk about how its better then Golden Axe 1

I expect an essay in this thread by Monday night sir.

ugh I've been playing so much Souls lately and doing all this VR stuff, sad I couldn't 1cc ESWAT in time. But being out-of-month doesn't have to stop me!

I can't pass the level 4 in ESWAT, mad scientist / sewers stuff. Once I lose the automatic fire, I could just as well reset the game because I can't progress without it.

The mad scientist boss is easy as hell, one of the easiest in the game even.

Well I got to the final stage in Alien Storm and then promptly died. Was playing as the robot character and found it difficult to not get attacked during bosses. Some long-range attacks would be nice :p (unless I'm missing something).
