Sega Genesis/MegaDrive Appreciation Thread: Alien Storm > Golden Axe

Got bored this Sunday afternoon and bought the compilation Megagames I, with Columns, Super Hang-On, and a football game. I don't like collecting compilations, but this one I like, for some reason. I suppose it's iconic, has good presentation and contains quality games. A friend had it back in the days and we mainly played the football game, while we thought Hang-On was super hard and Columns was boring. We knew nothing. I know I'll spend most of my time on Columns now.

Lol. this sounds like me.

SEGAgaf what are you drinking...I mean playing tonight?

cheers

Well, I'm drinking a Red Racer IPA, which is delicious. But no Sega, I'm watching the Bethesda conference. Keeping my fingers crossed for The Evil Within 2.

I had it on as well. Unfortunately nothing they announced has Mike Haggar in it.

I need to find Red Racer at the LC.

Was drinking some red wine with two friends while watching the euros, so no gaming for me yesterday, and i think it will be hard to give my lovely Mega Drive any love as long as the tournament is on. The drinking part wont be a problem though.

drat... in the move from college to back home i may have lost the power to my SCART to YUV converter. fuck! does anyone know how common these cables are or where to get them? looks like it's 12v and the hole looks like the Genesis model 2's, just a bit smaller.

help!

I forget the voltage but I know from experience it needs to be at least 1500mah! I grabbed a random adapter of the right voltage and thought "900mah should be enough"

Nope. Picture was distorted and colors were way off. Tried a 1.2kmah and same deal.

Ill check the voltage for you when I get home.

yeah, i need to get back to Quackshot soon...was seeing some progress but how long is it?
tempted to scumstate so i can come back to it later

and yeah, voted! MAKE MINE MARVEL

Still kind of a shame that Universal Soldier's what they did to Turrican 2.

Sure is, but it makes for an interesting port at least. I mean how many games pit you against a giant Dolf Lundgren?

man's got a point

It's summer, time to crank some tunes and hit the beach!

oh man, bumping Magical Sound Shower tonight!!

I ended up playing some more Shining in the Darkness this afternoon, and over the course of a couple hours, I finished another whole level of the dungeon: The Cave of Truth.

This game continues to be great, but I think I can only put in a few hours every couple weeks, or else you get burnt out REALLY fast.

god, i love your maps - you keeping those? haha
and i know i powered through it as an RPG-starved kid, but yeah, i can see needing breaks. i took a couple during Shining the Holy Ark earlier this year, and that game's likewise fantastic

oh man, i was watching the big lebowski & moving a new bookcase in, but drank some yeungling (sp?) in this pac-man cup i got from megacon, the ghosts light up when you fill it with cold beer! MAGIC

also i drink jack & coke exclusive from my Classic Game Room mug, of course

Its not that long, after the three opening levels, there are 4 (i think) new levels, and then a final level. So about 8 levels in total if Im remembering correctly.

I ended my last try at Robotnik Pete as I had no idea how to deal with him and just couldn't bother redoing the swinging platforms section that late in the night. I'll get him next time!

Haha, I should scan them and put them online when I'm done with the game. Though, to be 100% honest, I think if you just followed the maps without hitting all the dead-ends you'd get under-leveled pretty quickly.

Also, +1 to Jack and Coke, that's what I drank exclusively to my trip to Nashville last year, especially after the awesome Jack Daniels distillery tour (It's free, do it if you're in town!).

Can't do Jack and Cokes anymore, all the sugar from the pop gives me bad hangovers. I will usually have a decent scotch or belgian ale.

It's quacktastic! The Japanese CIB was actually a lot cheaper than the US version on Amazon.

I went looking for my Model 1 Sega CD now that replacement drive belts are available online only discover that... It's gone. I must have gotten sick of looking at it and lost all hope of replacement parts ever being available when I was cleaning a few years ago. The Model 1 is so much cooler than the Model 2 and I must acquire a new one!

Was playing some Thunder Force 2 just now, and its been a while to say the least. How do i avoid the barriers (that look like they are part of the foreground) on the first level?

Edit: Never mind I think I found out about it.

i adore but likewise suck at OutRun! here's what ive learned:

a) always go left (easy route)
b) you're changing gears, but are you hitting stuff? are you slowing down too much for turns?
c) later games punish you for not drifting...i don't know why im writing this here
d) magical sound shower

Guys how do I get past the first checkpoint in Outrun? I change gears but I always run out of time. Why is this so beloved?!
its quality has little to do with your ability to finish the first stage lol. for the first checkpoint you don't have to use your brake at all, save maybe one turn.

omg spoilers

Haha don't worry there's lot more than just this screen, It has a cool lengthy ending :)

Try not to bump into things? You should be able to do the whole segment pedal to the metal, as long as you don't hit too many cars and trees you should get to the first checkpoint easily.

You should change gear only when you are in the red on your speed bar. Drive in Low until you hit 115-120mph, then switch to High. If you get into a crash, the car resets to low so you don't have to worry about that.

^ i always felt going all right was easiest at least my play-throughs.

for the first stage check point, i wouldn't shift into low gear at all. just learn to go full speed 293 and power slide all turns no brakes to accumulate extra time.

i got Lightening Force in the mail today from amazon for 22 shipped with case, no manual:

So, I haven't dipped into Quackshot because I've been too busy for more than 30 minutes of uninterrupted game time. However, I did play some Thunder Force 2 yesterday because I had 15 minutes to kill.

...Man, I REALLY suck at shooters. I got to the 2nd overhead stage before I turned it off. Great music, but I just wasn't feeling the game, especially wandering around the overhead sections looking for bases to destroy, and running into walls that look like you should be able to fly under them.

Mega Games I got!

Man, that football game is not the greatest football game ever, that's for sure. It's probably better in multi. After a few drinks.

I still can't finish a single race in Super Hang-On. I need to git gud, at least to finish Africa.

Columns is still super easy in Easy mode, I need to challenge myself in Amateur and Pro.

Haha, this is exactly where I got when i tried it yesterday. Really hard game, and kind of annoying in those overhead stages, worst part of the game is those walls you write about. Such a terrible design decision!

I never had a problem with those bits, it was always the hyperspeed part in stage 5 (?) that got me. I called 800 USA SEGA a few times back in the day about it :b

Ultimate cinefusion technology and amazing 3D rendered graphics to bring you a batsuit with nipples.

Anyone do region modding for Genesis/Mega Drive? What about if you want to add Sega CD and/or 32x, do they have to be modded too? Right now I have a Model 1 Genesis but kind of want (for style reasons) to use a Model 1 Mega Drive, but play mostly North American games.

[for the Megadrive] It's super easy to do, there are jumpers on the board and you just either move them around to change the language and refresh rate, or put a switch on it. It's basic soldering, the most difficult part is probably mounting the switch on the shell.

The 32X and Mega CD are not region locked, but their games are. You can have any combination of hardware regions, but you need the correct region games. 32X is just a 50/60Hz switch, the Mega CD you need to either remove the ROM BIOS (difficult) or bypass it with an Everdrive.

Where are you located?

Video Games & Computer Entertainment September 1990 review of After Burner II for Genesis.

Compared to EGM's more generous review, I found VG&CE's to be more in line with how I felt about the Genesis version after playing it that same summer.
Yet even back then, I knew full well that system was nowhere near as powerful as the arcade hardware.

Dang, the writing in VG&CE was so much better and detailed than EGM's snippets. Never read much of that magazine before it spun off into Tips & Tricks. Gonna look for some scans now.

Indeed their writing was very good. I remember reading the VG&CE review back then in 1990, and I've seen it one time since, probably in the early 2000s. Had not been able to read it again until just the other day.
