Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice | OT | Borne of Souls

I feel like a complete idiot, just realised today that I can easily take out archers with shuriken...

I go and stand in the corner for a bit...

I'm only a couple of hours in, but I find myself often wishing it was more like Nioh..
What about Nioh are you missing? I like Nioh, but it has its share of issues and no wonder it didn't show up in too many GOTY lists.

Beautiful, as Rodin would say.

Despite my occasional rant (due to the game's trolling spikes) I love Sekiro so much. I think it's a perfect twist to the formula, except for those cheap tactics they have inserted to ramp up the difficulty. That's why I am not the least disturbed to cheese some enemies in the meanest ways. After my rage with the monkey boss I trolled back when fighting the Snake Eyes in the bottom of the sunken valley. If you make them all alert and then you climb up to the rock above the altar (being still in the enemies vision line) you will draw them to the poison swamp and they will die by themselves. Only the boss needs to be given the final blow. Cheap but safe.

Thanks for that tip but I think I’m out. This game is way too needy for me. I’m actually quite bored.

I’m only the third boss in and I’ve sunk a whole Bloodborne’s worth of playthrough into that. I don’t mind playing a rhythm game for a few moments but five monutes just to die on, again and again is not what I signed up for, especially with these spongy controls.

I think this could set a very dangerous precident for janky endless boss encounters in the future — I thought I’d seen the last of this sort of crap. I keep getting Shadows of Mordor flashbacks and a hate that game.

What annoys me is that there is always a way to cheese the boss but it’s either locked behind a grinding paywall or you have to spend hours in trial and error. The game wants your attention either way, so, so badly. I didn’t come here for an rpg or to be forced down a specific route of play. It makes me wonder if From even play other games — and if Myazaki says he’s not very good at Dark Souls how the hell is he supposed to calibrate the gameplay on this?

I may feel differently tomorrow.

Some Knucklehead on a FB gaming group said the game was "generic".

I asked them, how so.

He posted a gif of a Naurto game, stating it has the same mechanics.

not great but it's not bad either. it looks just fine.

performance on the other hand....if you're happy with 30fps and awful frame pacing then go for it. the PS4 Pro has an unlocked framerate which i think is even worse because it will be anywhere between 30-60fps. at least on base consoles it's locked so you don't get heavy drops so if you are playing on console i would recommend the standard PS4 over Pro here. PC is the only way to play the game at 60fps solid with even frame pacing. for a game that relies heavily on timing having the image stutter constantly is NOT good. in most games you'd be fine but in a game like this it could end up getting you killed.

It’s a pain in the arse, — go for the pc version. I’m quitting and restarting on pc at a later date. A game this precise needs 60fps locked. It should be razor sharp but instead it’s a spongy mess. You get a fair amount of screen freezing and stuttering.

It's a ton more fun than Nioh in my opinion. Nioh had seriously the ugliest most generic levels.

I enjoyed my time with nioh but this evolved the formula. You may be able to argue combat but getting around the world and the level design is a lot better in Sekiro.

For beating the Lady Butterfly easily you just get close to her and spam Nightjar slash. Thats about it.
She isn't that bad.
My tactic was to 2 sidesteps around her and attack, if she deflects listen for the 2nd or 3rd hit and you'll hear the deflect sound, now mash guard to deflect her attacks,. Shuriken her when she is in the air. Run around the ghosts or run into the middle of them and use a snap seed.

So, i was pretty confident after beating
Genichiro
in less than 10 tries. But right now my confidenct is shattered and im stuck on two particular bosses

Guardian Ape. I can get to the 2nd phase with 2-3 heals left but after that he just crushes me either with attacks or with Terror status.

and

O rin water. I know how to defeat her but i just cant because her sword attack inflict far too much posture damage, its impossible to deflect her attacks. Its also really hard to inflict any kind of vitality damage on her as well

So any tips, cheese, anything that can help me out?

Finally beat the game :D

That last boss took me a while......

Nothing better than when u go on a great run taking no damage. I got to last phase pretty much unscathed , had few dodgy moments but held my nerve.

I killed this stupid monkey few h ago, here is my tip:

Run away entire fight and attack only after "thrust" attack (single strike), I used double slash ability (I don't know its english name, it's one of the first skills).

As for Orin, hit her with ceramic (item) before the fight - that gives you opportunity for stealth kill (I'm not joking) then just parry her attacks (easier said than done, I know ;)).

On the G.A.:

You can run, circling around the area on the 2nd phase. Do it counter clockwise and wait until he "dives", go yo his side and hit him twice. Go back to running and repeat.

It's the cheesiest thing, but it works lol

Lol, what? I have almost beaten every boss in the game on base PS4 and had no issues with the FPS.

If you get good with deflecting, you can stun the monkey when he does his big overhead swing which allows you to get a number of good hits on him.

For the first one, oil and flame vent will give you huge windows for getting digs in. Stage 2, don't swing more than twice when you're able to and be ready to jump the fuck back when he starts screaming.

Second one is optional, you can run past her. I haven't beaten her yet myself but she's top of the list tomorrow. I almost had her just by parrying and breaking her poise.

Was O'rin really that difficult? She seemed super easy to me. Meanwhile the stupid monk gave me an ulcer on my fight with him.
For me she was. If you don’t have divine confetti then it’s a battle of endurance where it takes forever to take her health down while she could kill you in two or three hits. On top of that, either she was too bouncy or she was completely unfazed by firecrackers so I couldn’t use that, I had no snap seeds for instant dmg and by the time I’ve run up all 19 spirit tokens (usually using either fire or poison) she would only have just been knocked down to phase 2.

The monk ironically I beat in my first try. He’s super slow and completely vulnerable to the firecracker stab stab firecracker strategy.

I also found a nice mid-game XP grinding spot at the Hidden Forest Idol

You can pretty much get 2,440xp in a minute. (And as phantoms they have a high chance of dropping spirit tokens)

She was also very slow with her attack wind ups. As long as you keep an eye on her weapon, it becomes pretty easy to deflect. Not sure why you would use snap seeds or divine confetti. Didn't use either on the fight - but I may have just gotten lucky with the moves she used.

Also, is there any story with the Suzaku that you know of? Curious to know if there is optional dialogue if you could find whoever that person is.

Just my personal opinion, getting around the world is not even better than it was in Tenchu. All you can grapple are glowing points. The platforming is not very good either. The level design is good, like all From Software games and is clearly one of their strengths.

The combat is not even close to Nioh though. Doesn't mean it's bad, the game is certainly fun with some interesting combat. But Nioh is best in class in this area by a very large margin. Multiple interesting weapons with complex movelists, and all with multiple stances. Very interested to see what Nioh 2 pulls out.

Yeah I had no idea. I thought since I reached Lady Butterfly I should try to kill her before moving on.

I went form Lady Butterfly to Horse Boss and did his easily. Bull Boss doesn't seem that hard either. Once I've done Horse Boss I'll go back and try Butterfly again.

I did the exact same thing lol. I got some really bad advice for the Bull Boss and he shut me down for hours, which made me think I should go try Butterfly instead but she's actually way harder.

For the Ape:
For the 2nd phase, keep your distance until he does that fencing attack that goes to one side, then the other and repeat. When he is going for the last thrust go in, block it or deflect it and get next to him and circle him. Chances are he is going to do a long overhead several times and you happen to be behind him so hit away. Really easy that way.

I'm not even gonna kill him. Not worth the time invested.
I actually just now killed his ass. My fucking god!!! I re-tried this boss so much that his attack patterns became muscle memory.

You know things are clicking when the armored guy who yells Robert starts feeling easy. I had to finish him off a few times because he kept getting stuck on geometry on his way out.

I'm really bummed that this game won't have longevity for me because it has very little replayability (compared to the soulborne series). I know it's fine, it's a great game and all but coming back to replay any Dark Souls with a different weapon or to invade/coop in another place you never did kept those games so fresh for me.

BRB gonna invade people in Sen's Fortress and hang from the oscillating axes.

I personally never bothered with online part of the Souls and Bloodborne, for me the “replayability” comes from NG+ and it’s going same for me with Sekiro.

I absolutely hated getting trolled by invaders when I was in the middle of doing something that was already tedious.
NG+
has nothing new sadly, one of DS2 strenghts.
the game has 5 different endings, I think that counts for something to play NG+ for

when i use the dragon blood droplet does it heal everyone or just one NPC?

i don't know when i should use it.

Ok, how do I cheese Genichiro?

Also fuck loading screens when the rebirth idol is three meters away.

Get Shadowrush and upgrade your spirit emblems. The cheese only works for as long as you have emblems, and I would not recommend it during his 3rd phase.

All of them. I had like 3 or 4 of them so I figured what the hell, I'll finally use one. I just kept buying them whenever I'd see them at a vendor just in case.

Just go ahead and use one when things have gotten really bad.

See I have one and my unseen aid is at 10% but I don't want to use it yet as I'm sure I'll just end up dying loads straight after I've used it anyway lol

It was definitely an an amazing match. It had the level of an endurance fight that I haven’t had since Slave Knight Gael.

That's not entirely true, on ng+ you'll take damage even while blocking and you really need to hold down block to recover posture, in NG you just did it occasionally.

But yeah I don't thing from is interested in putting much effort into ng+

I take it you gave Kuro, Kuro's Charm in the beginning of NG+? Giving it to him adds said chip damage.

Good for you. You must be better at the game than me, or have more spare time, or have a greater tolerance for dying due to the game suttering. Either way I'm bored.

I thought these sort of endless, interminable boss fights had gone the way of the dodo. But no, they've now been resurrected by From and hailed as genius.

It's not the skill that it requires to deflect the blows that's the problem, it's that at the end of the day the gameplay is too basic. Deflect, hit, rock, paper, scissors.
Knowing that every, fucking, battle is going to be the same, and that every ... fucking ... battle, you're going to have to spend time doing an hours homework, just through trial and error working the cues out.

I'm genuinely glad that people are getting enjoyment out of this, as I usually love From games, but as someone who loves difficult games of all kinds, this is far, far too hard for a mainstream title and requires too much of my time.

If Miyazaki and co, had put as much care and effort into the programming / loading times / AI etc as they did trying to fuck me up, I'd be with them. But a lot of this game seems lazy and regressive, so fuck em.

I agree. Nioh bored me in the end because it felt a bit too mechanical (endless repetition) but the fighting was tight and exactly what we should be seeing here. You never felt cheated.

I personally never felt cheated in any of Sekiro’s bosses. Most my death came from reading enemy’s attack wrong.

For me Sekiro’s combat felt very satisfying. I played the demo for Nioh and I honestly vastly prefer Sekiro’s combat.

Do you guys think the offers on ebay for 20 Pounds (shipped from uk) are legit for that game? Seems a bit weird to me thats already sold that low...

Sorry if its not allowed to ask this here, just looking for a well priced copy and i got burned so much in the past

A big deal of Sekiro's difficulty lies in your own mindset when facing hard enemies. Specially, the aggressive ones. Your instincts scream "protect yourself" "run around" "dodge" but that doesnt cut it.

Nioh is a good game, but Sekiro is on another level of greatness. It's the difference between being good and being genius. There are so many nuances and little teaks to make your life easier without telling you or holding your hand. Thats amazing. For example, those suffering with terror, be informed that later on that won't be much of a problem. But you need to unlock something first. If you are stuck somewhere, explore elsewhere and you may find something useful for your current roadblock.
