I haven't put my copy online yet. Got it all hooked up though. Anyway, I have played some great online games and I'm a little worried I might not like Halo 2 as much as everyone seems to. Counter-strike and Battlefield 1942 have been my favorite games online. Counter-strike introducing me to it and blowing my mind, and Battlefield's versitality and atmosphere. Also, both games hold a bit of realism with the health system. I mean, I really enjoy Halo's single player but you fire a lot of bullets and I imagine there's gotta be a ton of times you think you got someone and they just hide and recharge. But then again, I guess it's about the balance of weapons that determines how quick you take someone down. Probably a different type of experience.

Anyway, I just wanted to see what everyone's favorite 1st persons shooters are. There's gotta be some people who crave Socom II like shooting with it's realistic approach to the fighting. And I've yet to put Halo 2 online yet so mind any misunderstanding of the way it plays online. I got Counterstrike Source and Halo 2 both and I'm deciding which to play first right now, so that brought upon wondering which style of multiplayers for me. Does Halo 2 play as well as everyone gushes and is it really the end all of multiplayer games for the moment. Or is there something better out there?

best multiplayer i've played (including goldeneye, perfect dark zero, quake 3, unreal, rainbow six).

I mean, i play it up to 4 hours a night. No game has me hooked like Halo 2

Thankyou Bungie. Now for more maps!

in before pc advocates and nintendo advocates in momentary collusion with pc advocates tear you to shreds.

but i think halo 2's as good a multiplayer fps as any. they're all the damn same to me. except for the realistic ones, i guess, which just aren't any fun.

Halo 2 is amazing online.
But I feel you with the realism.
I usually snap socom 2 in when I don't want a sci fi setting.

For multiplayer, I'm going to take that to mean Online, since just straight up splitscreen introduces a lot of games and there could be ones that are really awesome that nobody has played. Plus, there are no splitscreen PC games that I know of.

From this remaining set of games I'd say that Halo 2 is definitely near the top, saying it's the absolute top is pointless and arbitrary, just having it being one of the best is enough. There are a few reasons that I feel put Halo above a lot of the other FPS games on the market right now.

Death penalties, this is something I absolutely abhor in online games like CS and Rainbow Six, I'm not very good at those games so I die often, meaning I don't get to play for very long. Which sucks because it'll take me FOREVER to get better since I die so quickly, and it's just not fun waiting around watching other people play. Hell, even the 5 seconds waiting times in Halo can sometimes frustrate me, but those are entirely understandable for the way the game modes are played. And they're only 5 seconds so I can wait that long.

ArcadeStickMonk and dark10x can explain this far better than I, but the weapon balance in Halo is very close to perfect. Nothing feels cheap and every weapon or combination of weapons has a counter to it. The dual-weilding introduces so much strategy to the game and gives players even more options for discovering the ways to play that best suits their skills and styles.

Lastly, the maps are absolutely genious. While some are weaker than others and each person has their own preferences, the complexity of the Halo maps combined with the increased jumping ability of the player create truly strategic scenarios. I didn't fully appreciate this fact until I was playing Lockout with some guys and they were showing me some ways to jump across corners, to ledges and all this stuff that I never even thought of.

Yes/No No/Yes Who cares

Any answer will just be a personal matter of opinion. When i state that i dont believe it is the best answer does not mean i am aiming to edgrade the quality of the game. It is just that i believe that another game is better suited for myself.

In that case the best game for multiplayer for me at the moment is Raven Shield.

Cheers,
bbyybb.

I prefer UT2K4. Halo is too slow and floaty for my tastes, although the vehicle combat is ace. The weapon selection and balance in UT is superior, too.

Quake 3's deathmatch is still greater than anything. Especially if you throw Threewave in there.

But Halo 2's definitely damn good. I'd take it over the multiplayer in many recent PC FPSes.

Quake 3 Arena really was a good one. I played it online on a DreamCast, that was the first taste on real online gaming I got and man I must have played it atleast 3 times a week for the first year it was out.

Halo2 is the best for me though. I play online with friends. We set the night and were all laughing our asses off playing for hours. I pretty much like all the play modes but damn is King of the Kill ever fun. Screw staying in the circle, its about about grabbing a rocket launcher or Sniper riffle and unloading on the poor souls who do the dirty work :b

Seriously though, aside from wasting people in King of the hill the play stages are really sweet as are the weapons, smooth play, and ease of setting up games. Maybe theres better on the PC but my friends are I don't care quite honestly. You just want a game to play during the week with friends thats allot of fun and is as painless as possible to set up.

Halo 2 is so freaking flawed that it sucks. In Slayer matches I am constantly respawned right next to potential killers. Sure other games have spawn killers but it's 100x more annoying in Halo. My favorite FPS would be Enemy Territory. The maps suck too. You would think that after so many years of development they would have more maps and some that don't suck so much. I still like the game but those are my complaints with the multi...

Any current version of Counter-Strike is better than the entire game of Halo 2, including it's MP. And you could say the same for several other PC games, imo. That isn't to say H2's MP isn't the best that console gaming has to offer, because I'd say it's probably right up there, but in my experience online console gaming pales in comparison to online PC gaming in just about every respect; the most fun I've had with console online games are when developers have made good console style online games, such as PGR2, PSO, Splinter Cell, Mech Assault, Moto GP, etc, instead of watered down PC style games that are inferior in almost every way gameplay-wise.

It isnt my GOTY.

PC online FPS are so impersonal, even ones with Headset support like UT2k4, no one talks, unless you're playing with people you know. Its more like playing bots than real people. Slayer in Halo 2 is like that, granted, but the teamplay modes most of the time you can talk tactics/talk smack and someone will talk back.

I agree with Dhrone, on the most part they all play the same to me, Halo 2 is slower than most PC fps' obviously, but i wouldnt say it's better or worse for it.

I cant chose between maybe a dozen FPS' in gameplay terms but for the actual multiplayer experience Halo 2 is number 1.

Definitely best console multiplayer shooter. But I'd give the edge to one or two PC shooters overall for most fun. But that shouldn't take away from Halo 2, it's in my top 5 for best all time multiplayer shooter.

Nothing comes close to UT2k4. Between the awesome deathmatch, assault, onslaught, bombing run, all of the different mutators, and the hundreds of mods, it's not even a contest.

I played Quake3, Counter Strike and unreal on my PC. Quake 3 was awesome, didnt like Counter Strike.

The combat is Halo 2 is what puts it above all the FPS i have played. And I agree with Ghost.

Updating and ordering (while making jokes) adds to the satisfaction of taking people down. Well organised attack and defense, positioning snipers, loading up vehicles and providing air support. HAlo 2 multiplayer is fucking amazing, i see myself playing it for months.

And then theres the option to take 4 mates online with you. Oh man, some of the best gaming moments ever

If they all play the same to you, how can you have a fucking opinion on any of them?

Alright calm down.

I just meant from a gameplay point of view i dont see Halo 2/UT2k4/CS or whatever as better than anything else, they all have their pros and cons in terms of balance and challenge, control etc etc...I cant honestly pick one above the rest on that standpoint. As an actual multiplayer experience with other live people, Halo 2 wins for me.

Bar None..yes its the best multi player fps out there...period

Right now I would say that UT2K4 is probably the best FPS experience there is right now.

Of course, it all depends on what kind of auidence you are playing against, as one of the things that really ruined Counterstrike was the infestation of teenage morons onto the servers.

It's fun, no doubt about it, but this whole 'this game is teh definitive multiplayer shooter!11!' business is kind of pointless. Obviously it's going to vary on the individual's preference.

That said, Bungie needs to implement some sort of rocket lock-on warning for to give people on vehicles a split-second chance of bailing out before being exploded. I think it would still keep matters balanced - the vehicle would still get trashed but the person within still has a slight chance of surviving. As is, you have no idea if you're about to get trashed as you're using a Warthog to get across a map, etc. It's frustrating, and has a tendency to scare people away from the fun of using the vehicles.
