Shadow Complex available for free on PC, right now. [Up: For real this time]

right but my preference would definitely not be to install JazzDLz or whatever they're calling their client and given that it's free i don't think it would be too much of a hurdle to accommodate that by making it available drm-free through, say, gog, humble, desura, steam, shinyloot, origin, uplay, battle.net, intel appup, greenhouse gaming, or any of the other services that already exist and would be less superfluous than epic making their own client
Epic's client has existed for a while, and it's the best client on the internet since it allows you to download UE4 which is the best free thing on the internet :P

I just installed the client, and noticed the UT pre-alpha was there, so downloaded that too, and it is freaking great. Free Shadow Complex, free Unreal Tournament, great value.

Shadow Complex Remastered starts automatically in your pc's standard language without an in-game option to change that.
If you want to change it you can do it manually by opening
''DefaultEngine.ini'' in ''ShadowComplexRemastered\EmpireGame\Config''
and search for ''Language'' (it's the 28 line) and enter your preferred language.

If you want to change graphics settings you can do it by opening ''DefaultSystemSettings.ini'' in the same folder.

I would highly suggest changing the following graphics settings to this suggested ones

MaxAnisotropy=16

MaxShadowResolution=3072

MaxWholeSceneDominantShadowResolution=3840

Anisotropy settings should be in the gpu driver settings to enforce 16x by the way, performance impact is low and it's worth it in every game.
The other two settings fix the shadow resolution, otherwise they look atrocious.

I was excited when this showed up on PEGI's ratings the other day for PC but absolutely floored when I wake up this morning and find that it's free. Merry Christmas indeed Epic!

Must have had a big smirk on my face dicking around for the first hour in this. Keyboard and mouse controls are surprisingly tight and well thought out. Probably will get the Steam controller set up tonight which will probably be a game breaking combination.

Q: What about Shadow Complex 2?

A: There is much more ChAIR would love to do in the Shadow Complex universe. Now that we hold the publishing rights, we’re hopeful that bringing the original game to multiple new platforms will increase the opportunity to do more Shadow Complex games in the future!

More important than any of the other SC news we've received in the last 24 hours.

It says it's free for the holidays. Does it mean once that's over it's going to be removed from the launcher or just that for that duration anyone can get it for free and then they can keep it?

Given the long duration, the former is my guess.

Once downloaded (before December 31) the game is permanently yours to keep according to Epic forums.

What a wonderful surprise, I have wanted to try Shadow Complex for a long time!

This does not play well with Big Picture Mode. I really hope the Steam version doesn't have to deal with this launcher. I hope there is a Steam version.

I got it to function at least by adding the launcher as the shortcut (didn't have to do this with UT) and then launching it from there. You can bring the overlay up and set your bindings but if you linger around too long without going back to the game it seems to lose focus and doesn't respond to any control method. Finally got some Steam controller bindings set up but tweaking the mouse sensitivity is probably going to be a pain but sort of works alright as long as you don't have the overlay up for more than 10 seconds. I've got a few more issues that I probably put in a support ticket and see if they get addressed.

Wow!

Thank you Epic games!

I don't see where that's mentioned.

edit: seeing it now. Post #8

@Dloannis
Yes, once downloaded you can play permanently.

Everyone else, we are increasing bandwidth as we speak. Please keep trying!

Cool.

It seems like I have to configure the controller before launching it or it won't take. Also, if I open the overlay while playing it, I have to alt-tab to get the game to respond to anything again. Just all around weirdness on my end.

I'll try to add the launcher instead of the game exe to see if that helps me out. I'm trying out some funky bindings, but it's hard to experiment when I can't go back and forth. I'm testing out Mouse Region on the right pad for absolute mouse control, but it's not feeling as good as I'd like just yet. To use the mouse, I had to go with WASD for the analog stick with an inverted outerbind of ctrl (walk). I may end up going with Mouse Joystick in the end, but I do want to give this a try before giving up.

Thank you, Portugal portuguese was driving me nuts (bad voice acting).

Outstanding. An excellent game.

In fact this was the very last game I played when my 360 died.

Oddly enough it may not seem like a demanding game despite it running on UE3 on the 360.

This game caused white dots to show up on my TV when playing this game and my 360 HANA HDMI chip eventually failed and led a E74 error failure.

I never got to 100% explore everything. Now I can finally do that and the game is significantly better looking / better running too.

So I haven't played much of the original, but this game looks like a UE3 engine title from after the big lightmass update back around 2009. Given Shadow Complex's original release date, it was probably lit in a much more flat manner.

uh, yeah y'all, look at this 360 shot:

Compare to the shot of the newer version earlier in this thread:

This is a product of effort and a pretty big improvement.

Yeah I don't get some people saying this looks a mild improvement over the 360 version. Based on this comparison I can't see how anyone can say the difference isn't significant.

Not working here. After half an hour of fighting to sign up and to start the launcher I finally downloaded the game, but it won't start when I hit the start button. oh well.

Had some trouble downloading yesterday, so I tried again and it worked. Not much of a "remaster" though, just a simple and somewhat upressed port. Not that I'm complaining, one of the better Metroidvanias, and I've been wanting to replay this but I sold my X360 some time ago. Also, I seem to be having trouble downsampling this from 1440p (Sapphire 280), ~40fps average with frequent drops. Doesn't sound right considering I'm sure Shadow Complex isn't a very demanding game.

Had a weird bug where I couldn't proceed with the first mission with Jason, got to the control room and the interrogation video wasn't playing on the monitor. Took me a while to realise it was bugged. Are bugs like this common in this game?

No, my time with it on the X360 was a very polished experience. I think your situation was just a rare off-chance. Just played an hour or so on PC and didn't encounter anything (though I seem to be having performance issues when downsampling from 1440p, can't be right).

i think when they removed the atmosphere to improve the textures, they forgot to put it back in when they were finished.

Damn, the X360 looks much uglier than I can remember. And it was 30fps.

I suppose then this new version is definitely the version to play now.

Shadow Complex came out right after my 360 red-ringed for the third and last time, and I've been wanting to play it ever since.

Still don't think it is worth installing an Epic client though.

1080p/3570k/7970.
Really weird.

Yeah, definitely not your specs I hope it's something simple that gets isolated/fixed soon.

Does this work offline?

Strangely enough the launcher has an offline mode, but if you open it up SC is not on the menu. So as far as I can tell, no.

-edit- So I started the launcher online, disabled networking, tried to launch the game and it won't open. :|

So has every major company done the "bait people into installing our client on their system with a freebie" thing now?

Anyone tried this on a laptop with integrated graphics? I'd kind of like to play it again, but not sure how it will run on my Intel HD 4000. I'll get it on PS4 anyway, but not sure it's worth the download.

Just to stoke my curiosity and to see how it might run downloaded this on a gen 1 Surface Pro which has a HD4000 iGPU. At 1280x720 under DX9 and everything at it's minimum between 15-20fps, lower end outdoors, higher end inside but that's not with too much going on so I imagine the boss battles and turret section are going to be single digits.

If that's what you want to call it, then Epic has done it 3 times already. (UE4, UT reboot, and now Shadow Complex.

I can't complain.

When I read the news yesterday about the remaster I was psyched, Shadow Complex was one of my favorite 360 games. I was hoping it would be released soon and only be about $20 or so.

Wake up to find out its out today and free?! Is this real life?

For free? How the heck I this possible?
This game is one of the few XBLA games which I regret not having played, before I got rid of my Xbox360.

Set the game to 4k, interface doesn't scale. Fucking HATE that shit. It's 2015 y'all, come on.
