Shadow Complex available for free on PC, right now. [Up: For real this time]

If that's what you want to call it, then Epic has done it 3 times already. (UE4, UT reboot, and now Shadow Complex.

I can't complain.
It is hard to argue with [monetary] free.

I suppose for these kinds of deals it just comes down to consumer trust and whether the value proposition is large enough to overcome any issues with the former.

e.g. I never downloaded Origin when they did the free offers because there's nearly nothing EA can do to make me install their pos client on my system. Yet I did download the Amazon Underground app even though I know it's basically monitoring phone usage and sending out personal info, because the value proposition was just insane. Then again, I'm not perusing all those "free game if you give us your personal info, email adress, like us on facebook, follow us on twitter, join our steam group") from random small sites. Things have to be judged on a case by case basis and often come down to how much you trust the company offering and how much you value your personal info.

I suppose there's not much issue to take with Epic, though the value proposition (for non developers) isn't super high here.

Just to stoke my curiosity and to see how it might run downloaded this on a gen 1 Surface Pro which has a HD4000 iGPU. At 1280x720 under DX9 and everything at it's minimum between 15-20fps, lower end outdoors, higher end inside but that's not with too much going on so I imagine the boss battles and turret section are going to be single digits.

Thanks for the info. I'll wait on the PS4 version to replay it.

Origin has come a long way, they even had a refund option well before Valve implemented it on Steam. Plus, they're giving away Jade Empire this month. the only thing they're really missing is a means to navigate origin with a controller.

I'd give it a second chance if I were you.

Nah, I have enough clients/launchers installed on my PC, I don't need another one.

That's fine. Origin is definitely the best non-Steam client/launcher I've seen so far though. Doesn't have all the features of Steam, but it's a better performing piece of software.

The Epic Launcher is garbage, though. I'll put up with it for Shadow Complex, but it's not good at all.

Origin's refund policy is not equivalent to Steam's in the slightest. The Steam one is store-wide, the Origin one is for EA games only.

Steam's refund policy would be no way near as significant if it only applied to Valve games.

Yeah I don't get some people saying this looks a mild improvement over the 360 version. Based on this comparison I can't see how anyone can say the difference isn't significant.

For some reason, people have a real bad tendency to remember games as looking better than they actually did. You see this all the time on GAF where people will say dumb shit like "This looks like a N64 game!" or some variation thereof. Our memories of games are rose-colored more often than not.

360 version looked pretty terrible and played very choppily but man it was a great game. I do remember wishing the game played smoother, so on my PC this running at 60fps is a nice improvement. Great game, that finally more people will enjoy and it'll be preserved a bit longer.

Loading this up on PC I already felt the greatness of the gameplay and got a bit addicted.

Well for an XBLA game it at the time it looked incredible, but yeah that framerate wasn't particularly good in spots.

So I haven't played much of the original, but this game looks like a UE3 engine title from after the big lightmass update back around 2009. Given Shadow Complex's original release date, it was probably lit in a much more flat manner.

uh, yeah y'all, look at this 360 shot:

Compare to the shot of the newer version earlier in this thread:

This is a product of effort and a pretty big improvement.

That's a big improvement definitely. Some of the textures look to be improved too.

Boy, I remember the 360 version looking much better though.
Memory is a funny thing as usual.

i think when they removed the atmosphere to improve the textures, they forgot to put it back in when they were finished.
If by atmosphere you mean make it brown and foggy again, no thanks.

Waded through the shitty client install process, finally got through after a couple errors, download of the game files at 85%. If I enjoy this I'll buy the eventual Steam version just so I can be rid of this terrible, terrible Epic front end.

Still, I'm really excited, I never played Shadow Complex before... Always wanted to but never had an Xbox 360. Hype!

Edit: and we're in business, finished DL. Lezgoooo!

Now that they gave it away free on PC, it's lost a lot of "perceived value". Wouldnt be surprised if it comes out as a PS+ and Games with Gold free game of the month.

Hmm, that's interesting. Even though it looks like a great game and I don't have to pay any money for it, having to use an account and their launcher makes it too expensive for me. I think I've passed some kind of threshold where I have too many games already and my tolerance for hassles is too low; I'm probably insufferable now, ha.

I hope everyone has fun with it!

I hope this is free to Xbox owners that have it on 360. Kinda like how Castlecrashers remastered was free for a limited time

it is, I literally deleted my 360 copy on my XB1 last night once I was able to try out the PC version

edit: if you mean the remastered version I dunno. That usually depends on the console manufacturer

Hopefully my pc can run this remaster better then the 360 can run the original.

Really nice to have a pc (and ps4) version finally, i'll accept this instead of a sequel for the time being, chair. :P

So has nobody else had a problem getting the launcher to load up? Because I'd really like to play Shadow Complex again, but these installation errors prevent me.

That's definitely true. I actually just played Shadow Complex for the third or fourth time the week it hit backwards compatibility in the Xbox One Preview, so maybe two months ago, and was surprised at how low res and it looked compared to my memory. When I fired it up last night on PC it was more how I remembered it, but better.

Turned DX11 off because I'm afraid the Bokeh is costing frames, and it's running at a pretty solid 120fps for me at 1080p. It does have the notorious hitching issues that UE3's known for, though.

Always wanted to try this, perfect.

Another client doesn't bother me at all, especially when I can just open/close it when required and ignore it for the vast majority of the time.

Shadow Complex Remastered starts automatically in your pc's standard language without an in-game option to change that.
If you want to change it you can do it manually by opening
''DefaultEngine.ini'' in ''ShadowComplexRemastered\EmpireGame\Config''
and search for ''Language'' (it's the 28 line) and enter your preferred language.

From

Language=

to

Language=english

If you want to change graphics settings you can do it by opening ''DefaultSystemSettings.ini'' in the same folder.

I would highly suggest changing the following graphics settings to this suggested ones

MaxAnisotropy=16

MaxShadowResolution=3072

MaxWholeSceneDominantShadowResolution=3840

Anisotropy settings should be in the gpu driver settings to enforce 16x by the way, performance impact is low and it's worth it in every game.
The other two settings fix the shadow resolution, otherwise they look atrocious.
What file should you target to override the Anisotopy? I have an AMD GPU and added the EpicGames>ShadowComplex>Binaries>Win32 executable to the Crimson profile. Activating at 4x doesn't seem to make any much of a difference (when it should). I was also going to try 8x just to be sure, but I have the feeling the Epic launcher is getting in the way...

I think I love you... Thanks, buddy.

Is switching weapons bugged? Control menu says scroll wheel but I just got the SMG and can't get back to the pistol.

I don't think you switch weapons (just grenades). When you upgrade your weapon you just use that one instead. I liked the pistol more than the SMG too and tried to switch back without success.

i'm an advocate of remasters retaining their visual identity. i don't appreciate it when games get the silent hill HD treatment tbh. but i guess you did.

I can actually take advantage of this now that I have a 2009 gaming laptop, as opposed to the 2005 business notebook I was lugging around before. xD

Can't say no to free. Looking forward to the action.

Awesome but running like shit for me on my i5 and 7870XT.

Edit: Never mind. AMD reverted back to a locked 50% fan speed for some reason and was throttling my GPU.

Anyone know a way of having DSR resolutions show up in game? For higher resolutions than monitor native only 16:9 show up. I guess I can turn off DSR and just use a custom res... But it's kind of weird to have to do that.

Epic Games Launcher Installer gives me an error code everytime. Nice.

edit: had to run CMD as admin and do it that way, strange.

This game runs in between 35-50 fps on my 7850. Something tells me this game isn't fully optimized, hence the later steam release.

No. I think it is more likely that Epic want some buzz towards their launcher, particularly with Paragon, UT and Fortnite picking up speed. Once the free period is over, it will probably appear on Steam to sweep up
