Shane Satterfield: Wii U will cost $299

In 2005, that Sub HD looked better than anything on the ps2-gc-xbox.
Eh, honestly I think RR6 looked better. 720p and a rock solid 60fps.

I had a 360 at launch though, I remember the Xbox 1.5 talk with less than flattering media of PD0/Kameo and DOA3vs4 bullshots. It's actually quite reminiscent of Wii U, just replace "Pikmin 3 looks like a Wii game" with "Perfect Dark Zero looks like an Xbox game".

So the WiiU fails for having games people want to play,
That is yet to be seen, and I didn't say it fails, I'm just stating why there is a lack of true excitement around the launch (at least for me).

whereas at the start of this gen people bought garbage because it was shiny and they had new TVs?

Yes? I did. It doesn't help when Greg Kasavin gives it a 9.0. Although PGR3 wasn't garbage, but had it looked like PGR2 I wouldn't have bought a new system to play it on At least not right away.

Can we just have one designated thread where people can bitch about the Wii U to their little hearts content so that threads like this that were meant to be informational can be free of this bullshit? Its the same arguments, the same lists, by mostly the same posters every frigging time. Seriously, if a mod sanctions it I'll make the damn thing. It can be the Wii U not anticipating thread.

As a launch lineup?

Yeah, it's pretty damn good. But it isn't being graded on a scale. It will be in direct competition with software releases on the other systems... of which... they're getting better releases.

As I've said before though. Quality isn't the winning factor. What the masses "catch" is what determines success. WiiSports isn't exactly the most fully-featured title in existence, but it was what the public wanted.
People seem to forget this fact. It's competing against the PC, 360, PS3, and yes, even the Vita and 3DS lineup this fall. Throw in smartphones if you want. If the lineup of those other systems was garbage, then people would have a point. For a launch lineup, it's not bad. However, it's not competing against other launch lineups.

lol, I would love to see this

of course, circlejerks of negativity never actually work. you need some positive to hit back against.

It has to be titled "Who else is REALLY excited about the Wii U?" And yes, with the caps. Trust me that title will be more than enough :P

^Shit's gonna be AWESOME

nooo stop don't post anymore. My hype... my hype... is rising.

I think anyone who was expecting $250 + something like a pack-in game was very much mislead, and/or bought in to that "LOL WII U IS 2005 TECH IT SHOULD BE 99 BUCKS" nonsense.

I expected $300, but *with* Nintendoland turned into a pack-in game. I think Nintendo would be very misguided to forgo a pack-in after the Wii. Wii U has to appeal equally to hardcore gamers, and everybody else.

If it's $300 with no pack-in or any other kind of special incentive, then it's a bit much / presented wrong.

Of course, the hitch may be that Nintendoland requires an m+ wiimote for some of its games, so Nintendo would have to be packing in a wiimote + game.

It is always possible they'll go hardcore old school and pack in NSMB U. Now that would be something to see.
NSMBU would be my dream pack-in. Famicastic.

I think if we get a pack-in, Nintendo Land is the most likely, and I think it depends on the competition's price drops. If 360/PS3 hold $249-299 for their premium SKUs then no pack-in, if they go $199 or less then free Nintendo Land.

I wouldn't mind it, I kinda want Chibi F-Zero.

The Wii U launch titles are average. It is nowhere close to the Dreamcast (18 launch titles)

North American launch: September 9, 1999

AirForce Delta[5]
Blue Stinger
Expendable
Flag to Flag
The House of the Dead 2

NFL Blitz 2000
Pen Pen TriIcelon
Power Stone
Ready 2 Rumble Boxing
Sonic Adventure
Soulcalibur
TNN Motorsports Hardcore Heat
Tokyo Xtreme Racer
TrickStyle

It's funny how people called the Xbox 360 the "Xbox 1.5" until they saw Gears of War, I'm taking it once people see Mario Wii U the "Wii 1.5" statements will be over.

That's completely untrue. 360 launched while the PS2 and DS were going strong. PS3 and Wii launched head to head with all the other consoles, Vita launched Vs. the 3DS current line up and the Wii U will also have to face this. Comparing new systems to existing ones is futile (unless the comparison concerns multiplat games). The system's launch should be judged on two merits: Exclusives and future outlook... I hope now you can see where WiiU's problems really lie.

I'm just stating why there is a lack of true excitement around the launch (at least for me).

Sounds like you're generalizing the public by what you think.

Look, everyone. Even the Wii U community thread was pretty bummed out after E3. Now the pot is starting to boil, and fewer people can reserve their excitement after seeing more of Wii U. The launch window is pretty damn diverse, and we don't even know the full line-up. Black Ops 2 says hi. Wii U doesn't have as many dudebro games as the other consoles, and, good.

The launch line up is excellent. I think people forget just how shit most launch windows are, yes Wii U has some old ports but a lot of people who only owned a Wii will not have been able to play them. The exclusives all seem to be of a high quality.

Actually we've been blessed, recently with this kind of "nothing huge or exclusive but a lot of solid ports". That was the case for the 3ds and nobody should forget the amazing Vita launch games (which has no games i know). But those two examples were qualified as poor and followed by under performing.

I mean there are things to be enthusiastic for with the WiiU, but nothing to be really excited for anyone not being a real Nintendo fan.

Based on the nds and wii success, this thing will need a surprise hit with a new ip.
In any case, 300 euros is probably to much, especially without a wiisport caliber bait inside.

"ZOMG, I'm not going to get Pikmin 3 because the graphics!"

C'mon, it's Pikmin 3. Seriously people...

I think Pikmin 3 looks pretty decent. We saw an improvement over the E3 build with the Gamescom build, so who knows what the end product will look like.

It's funny how people called the Xbox 360 the "Xbox 1.5" until they saw Gears of War, I'm taking it once people see Mario Wii U the "Wii 1.5" statements will be over.

The Mario on Wii U could easily be done on the Wii minus the resolution boost.

Nothing I said is untrue...at all. The same situation that applied to the PS3 and Wii apply here. I don't see where you're going with this.

If the lineup for the other platforms was trash, the WiiU would look a lot more attractive. If you want to be someone to bank on future outlook and potential exclusives (not much wiggle room here, it's gonna be a lot of Nintendo games, which are fantastic), then buy it day one. I've already been burned by the Vita, and that had an AMAZING lineup. MMOs don't survive on potential, and consoles don't survive on potential. This is a blanket statement and has nothing to do with the Wii U in particular.

Not really feeling it. It looks like Pikmin, but it's actually an action game, I really have no idea what to expect from the title. It seems like it should be downloadable, but maybe the game will be more complex that my first impression is. In all fairness I haven't read up on it yet, so I'm probably missing the point (as it kinda looked really simple to me so far).

You really need to watch some videos, man. There are multiple threads, search and you shall find. This game looks utterly insane, as you'd expect from Kamiya.

All things considered, it's probably my most anticipated title at the moment, full stop.

I am Jack's complete lack of surprise. Nintendo deserves some credit for keeping it affordable (the 360 is still $299), they should have no problem selling out whatever they ship this holiday.

$600 launch PS3 = bad but might as well have my wallet destroyed.

$299 Nintendo system = bad, definitely waiting a few years!

Meh. What are ya gonna do?

I'm kinda surprised that people expect the Wii U to cost $200. They are going to be disappointed when they see what prices Sony and Microsoft try to get away with in the next year or so regardless of the device's power.

At least the launch PS3 was (surprisingly) the best version of the console.

I'm on the fence if its 300. Need to see the actual launch lineup and knowing the outlook of the upcoming year would have been nice but Nintendo had to lose their Minds and show nothing. It's discouraging.

It's ok, we will all know in September about 2013 games :).

I don't think you clearly understood my post, its the fact that there is no future outlook that is hurting the Wii U. As i've said, line ups on current consoles don't do much at all to new consoles. It didn't hurt the Wii, didn't hurt the 360, and the reason why the other consoles had a rough start is because of mismanagement more than anything else (I do believe the Wii U will suffer from this as well).

Finally, if you are looking at the PS3 situation, remember during that time people weren't saying "my 360 does the same thing as my PS3" It was more like "the PS3 doesn't have anything interesting enough to warrant a $599 purchase".

I don't believe for a second that if the consoles had a shitty line up for the holidays that they will be flocking to the Wii U, they are just uninterested at this point, no matter what.

I watched ... I think two playthroughs and in both cases the gameplay looked kinda bland and simple, despite the cool art design. I'll give it a shot later, probably wouldn't have the money at launch anyway.

I guess if I could best summarize, it's an action game with multitasking. It's all about the balancing act of building up the power to use your abilities through simple attacks, and then utilizing each to its greatest effect as determined by the enemy you're facing.

It doesn't seem like a very technical action game, but more focused around decision-making and planning. So it is complex, just not necessarily in the way you would expect.

Care to speculate/elaborate why rather than making baseless, opinionated statements?

Its really just my gut feeling. Gaming enthusiasts like you or me will buy at $300. I am not sure the rest of the world will follow along.

A Wii U at $300 just doesn't feel like a good value much the same as the 3DS at $249.

We shall see what happens this fall.

Eh, if I do decide to get one it will be next year when a better lineup is announced. Buying the 3DS launch day taught me it's a bad idea to be an early adopter and I'm not paying $300 to play only Pikmin 3. Maybe Gamestop will let you trade in your Wii?
