Shane Satterfield: Wii U will cost $299

Can't Nintendo just put Blu-Ray playing software on the eShop? Those who don't have Blu-Ray players on that TV can get it for $15 and those who don't need it do not have to subsidise those who do when purchasing the console.

Has someone done the numbers and work out how many games could have been funded by using the money saved by not including an ethernet port and DVD playback in the Wii? Even if the per unit cost shaving was small, for such large volumes the savings could add up.

Rayman Legends
NintendoLands
ZombieU
Pikmin 3
New Super Mario Bros U
Some usual ports (Mass Effect 3, Darksiders 2, Madden etc)

Pretty good for launch IMO.

Add:
Black Ops 2

Possibly:
Splinter Cell: Blacklist (Hip Hop Gamer apparently confirmed this game, I guess we'll see)

Yeah but the Wii U is not on par with PS3/360, it's more powerful, if the sources and rumors are right the power will be...

Wii U = PS2
PS4/720 = Gamecube
PS4/720= Xbox

I have a feeling the difference between them will be quite a bit bigger than that. If what you're saying was the case then Wii U would have no problem running virtually all the multi-platform games PS4 and 720 will have at just about the same quality, which I doubt based on all the rumors and speculation over the past year.

I'm saying the Wii U versions will obviously be downports but it won't be anything like Wii vs PS3/360, the Wii U version will have weaker textures and not as great lighting and maybe other things but it won't be that bad.

Well even Wii and 3DS have netflix. The point is as you say in your second paragraph; Nintendo knows that anyone who wants these things will already have devices that do them, so why would they increase the cost of their product for no good reason?

Not to mention that those increased costs would affect the consumer and for what? To add a feature that would only matter to a very small group of people? Yeah, no thanks. I have a PS3 and a dedicated Blu Ray player hooked up and ready to go if I ever want to watch the Die Hard trilogy again.

$299 for hardware that won't deliver better performance than $250-$200 hardware? Pass.

Would have snagged at $250. Tops.

300 dollars is way too high - just being honest.

1. It needs to have the same amount of high-profile games that I currently have in my 360 library.
2. It needs to not be last gen.
3. I need it to have at least 4 gamepads included. What is this shit? Single player at launch? Unheard of.
4. I already have a Blu Ray player, but I need it to also play Blu Ray disks, or no sale.
5. Nintendo sucks at online.
6. I bet I can't even plug in an ethernet cord. Who the fuck has wifi these days?
7. I really need it to have an SD TV built in, because i'm not playing that last gen shit on my new tv.

With all this, I might just buy one at $250

Hey hey! It's getting Assassin's Creed 3 and Black Ops 2! That's more than worth $300.

You do realize this is completely unrealistic, right?

Edit: You got me. Well played.

A brilliant piece of sarcasm

Well done, good sir

Fair price. Still hoping for Nintendo Land as a pack-in for NA. The launch lineup is looking really solid even if there is seemingly no "OMFG I MUST HAVE THIS" game. I have a feeling that once some more Nintendo Land and NSMBU media is released, I'll be salivating over those titles. Same w/ Zombi U potentially.

The system supports 5 player games at launch.. not single player

I know what you're trying to say.. but it isn't the same thing as having support for multiple Wii U GamePad.

I'm not sure exactly how sarcastic this is with so many people using these as legit arguments... :-P

I very much want Pikmin 3, provided it's more like the excellent Pikmin 2 than the original, so-so entry.

Can't justify a 300 + 60 + tax purchase for it, though when I'm snatching up games I can't even keep up with now at bargain prices and it's the only title of merit that I won't be able to just turn around and buy on one of several current platforms I already own at some point. I do plan to pretty much end any early adopting, sans some unpredictable miracle software in the future, though, it's just never worth it.

I think the price is about right, though. Between the controller and the margins they like to roll with normally 299 is about what I expected. Still should have a default hard disk though.

But fuck me, I have to pay for more controllers? Shiiiit

I think quite a few will be swayed to buy the Wii U based on ZombiU alone. It looks really awesome so far and I'm sure it will be pushed hard when it's closer to launch time.

Some people won't care if Nintendo Land is a pack-in or not, since if they don't care for the game they won't play it either way.

Wii U = Xbox
PS3/360 = ps2
PS4/720= gaming pc
High end gaming pc = omg wtf graphics

It won't be that bad, and the Gamepad helps it, if the PS4 sticks with Duel Shock 4 than it could hurt it more than help it.
Fixed that for yah.

Kinda lost some interest in P3 since Miyamoto said he wasn't too satisfied with part 2 and now is more involved in this game to make it closer to the original. :/

You kinda messed up that analogy a bit, because 720/PS4 would be like a high-end gaming PC from 2001. But I see what you're saying.

Yikes, I had no idea he said that. Damn :(

Well, the main thing is there isn't a time limit in P3. So I'll live with the rest. Plus we have four playable characters!

Now Wii U is going to have to play catchup with Xbox and Playstation as they both already have Netflix, Hulu, Vudu, BBC Player, ESPN, etc. This fall is going to be interesting to say the least.
Wii already has Netflix, Hulu and BBC iPlayer. In fact Wii still gets about twice the Netflix audience PS3 and 360 manage today.

Wii U also adds Amazon Video and Youtube.

I'm so embarrassed... I seem to be the only one that doesn't know what kind of hardware the Wii U has... everyone knows but me!

Thats not true.Theres so much shit on netflix, and hulu you cant buy on dvd like keeping up with shows that are going on you cant blue ray that stuff.

For everything else go Blue-ray.

Netflix 1080p looks aweful compared to Blue-ray. I'm concerned that these people just have poor quality TV's or they are small.

With all the irrational Nintendo hatred going around, the only one that was clearly sarcastic to me is #7.

Also it's true, I would never game on wifi. Shit is too unreliable unless you own a Wireless N router which I don't, because I have no reason to own one. And even then it's probably still less reliable and less fast than a wired gigabit connection.

My honest opinion:

I thought the console would cost 300 dollars with Nintendo Land. If it comes with Nintendo Land and costs that much, I will buy it. If it doesn't, I'll probably wait until Pikmin comes out.

300 dollars is the upper limit of what I'd spend on it, but that has very little to do with my excitement for the console. My friend and I are very excited to get it. He's all up in ZombiU's business, and I really want Pikmin 3. I'll also probably end of getting P-100, Rayman, Mario, AssCreedIII, Darksiders 2, and maybe Lego City.

I also think that it is reasonable for people to not want it at 300 dollars, because a lot of individuals do not feel secure with only knowing 2012 titles. Nintendo's lack of commitment so far on naming a price, a date, launch games, launch window games, and future titles for 2013 makes it appear that Nintendo isn't properly invested in the Wii U, which can certainly be cause for concern.

Now, for those who follow Nintendo closely, they have two advantages. First, they are Nintendo fans and a lot of Nintendo titles will automatically appeal to them. Second, they know that Nintendo plans on unveiling more titles in September, those titles being both for the launch window and some for 2013.

In conclusion, people complain for their own reasons. It often just sounds like the rumblings of baseless Nintendo hate and trolling, but they have their reasons. It's unfortunate we all can't just love Nintendo.

I game on wifi for everything but my PC. Seems to work out fine with consoles.

The lineup is okay but the problem is it doesn't have the next gen visual bump that gets you excited for a new console. Its like buying new hardware for games we are already playing. So even in retrospect, the 360s launch wasn't great, you were excited to play PGR3 because it looked better than anything we've seen and even shitty games like Kameo and PDZ were worth playing because of that.

Than you had Gears and Oblivion to look forward to, two games that would really bring in the next gen feeling. Thats my take anyway.

Agree with this.
