In the latest Skill Up podcast, Shawn Layden is asked about the future of Live Service after seeing a number of notable failures release in the last 12 months. His response is interesting...

Solid comparison. Hope it actually turns out just like it.

On the plus side, at least there'll be less plastic waste from this horrible trend.

He's said a lot lately..... Without saying anything of note really, it's quite impressive.

Live service games are games that can be constantly updated, which is the pint of them, so what he's saying is will they eventually end? Well, yes, at some point. Fads happen in the game space also, but studios know this but until that fad changes you may as well get on the bandwagon rather than being left behind.

You want Gaas, hire Geminis, cause they're creative and won't put their hands down without external forces.

He's correct in that they're both trends but really GaaS is a lot closer to the MMO gold-rush in the advent of WoW's meteoric success.

The irony is that he now works for a company that makes bank off of live-service type games in the mobile space and is trying to inject itself into the console space as quickly as possible.

Shawn was removed from his position because he doesn't understand the medium he worked in.

Phil still has his position because he's not a buffoon.

🤣🤣🤣 I'm done. This has to be a parody post. Just has to be. The guy who practically sank Xbox as a console platform is the smart one out of the two? Biggest cap of the week.

This is what you never understood...

The XBox console was only ever a tool used to generate money. Now that Microsoft is one of the biggest (THE biggest?) publishers in the world, they no longer need the piece of plastic to extract money.

Satya Nadella doesn't care about the plastic box. Satya Nadella only cares about extracting money. That's why Shawn Layden is out and Phil Spencer is in. Shawn still lives in the romantic period of gaming in his head. He doesn't understand the times of today.

Phil is in his position because MS still has a select club culture, and he's a MS lifer groomed from an intern to the political/exec he is now. The end game was always EEE (eventually buying the top publishers). The MS way in every industry they get involved in.

So you're saying Phil Spencer was put in to deliberately kill Xbox as a platform, and MS buying Zenimax & ABK was planned from 2001? And not the result of many factors well outside of Microsoft's control converging into instances of sheer luck that they just happened to have the money to pursue due to things they planned for decades ago like failing with Zune and failing with Windows Phone? Were those two products also planned failures just to somehow miraculously allow them to buy ABK years later?

This logic you're using, makes absolutely zero sense. Spencer is the one stuck in the past; Nadella doesn't even understand the gaming market at all. That's not his industry. You're using pure happenstance on MS's part buying two large 3P publishers during a very turbulent period they could not control, as them having some part of a master plan.

Yes, a "master plan" where they almost offed their entire gaming platform brand before the companies they ended up buying even put offers out onto the market to buy. Unless you're suggesting MS, Zenimax & ABK board members colluded BTS to sabotage those two publishers so MS could buy them later on. But at that point, you'd be admitting that MS committed several federal-level crimes and should likely be sued out of existence, & their business licenses revoked globally.

You didn't think this through, padre.

Live service = constant stream of new, quality content for free.

"Normal" games = pay $70 for the unfinished version, then more $50 for the DLC.

Is the Playstation console line not a tool used to generate money? What is it for?

When the tide rises, it gets the lowest houses first.

You people act like XBox was run into the ground but it really wasn't. The market has weakened the position of the plastic box. That's why you see PlayStation throw so much support behind PC development now. Console has weakened immensely over the last 10 years. XBox was simply in the weaker position so the tide got it first.

The T Rex laughing at the extinction of the Stegosaurus doesn't realize the comet comes for him too.

Xbox lost the worst generation to lose.

Even Phil admitted it.

Dont try to spin this.

You didn't answer the question.

I can see why people think you're a complete dickhead. I asked you a question in good faith, and you've thrown back a bunch of 'you people' horseshit. You're an idiot and a waste of time.
Was your question "Is the Playstation console line not a tool used to generate money? What is it for?"

You think THAT is worth answering? I'm sorry if you were honestly trying to communicate in good faith but the answer is so obviously yes that it felt too rudimentary to entertain.

Why are you replying? The fact that you think that this thread should devolve into people assessing the value of each other's questions indicates your actual intention here. Stop embarrassing yourself.

Silly questions get silly answers.

Don't take it personally.

Microsoft have been forced to change their strategy due poor console sales.

Don’t make out their current strategy is 4D chess decades in the making.
Nope.

They changed their strategy because game costs keep rising and PC continues to grow into a can't miss platform. PlayStation is in the same quicksand. Their head just isn't fully submerged yet.

PlayStation is making record profits

Xbox division is desperately trying to make back the cost of the Activision acquisition

They’re in completely different places

Doesn’t he work for fuckin Tencent? Is their bread and butter not GaaS slop?
He left earlier this year.

His current work is a combo of being a former board member of Streamline (hard to understand what they do for games, but it looks like they are a support studio or something), and also a founding board member of some social media kind of sports game that looks like junk.

So you can understand why he promotes smaller companies and games now. It's his current focus. But when he was head of Sony, he was surely pumping their big budget games hard. So he'll promote what is in his best interests at the current moment.
