SHENMUE 3 kickstarter (PC/PS4) - FINAL DAY - NEW KS RECORD GO GO GO!

Doubt it's a troll. They've just announced a bunch of new tiers. A lot of people are currently changing and moving their pledges around. Especially now that some of the the lower tiers look more enticing than the higher ones.

More likely a troll though, it was the full 10k right when it hit 4.61m. They were a big late, it's still just over 4.6m.

AJ were too quick to update that KS stretch goal as "reached". It would be safer to wait until it's at least 20k past the goal.

i think they need to lay off the higher tiers now. like for good. they either add some crazy $15,000 replica stone mirrors + a number of previous tiers option, or they should just leave the high end alone for the rest of the campaign.

it's all about pushing people up from $29 and $60 now.

From the update:

"a big thank you to everyone for helping us reach the $4.6M Baisha Battle Event Stretch Goal! Ryo will have a tough battle on his hands with this one! "

I feel guilty for helping make things harder for Ryo :/

I agree. A lot of the higher tier options are getting kind of complicated, like who gets what, does higher tiers include lower tier rewards, etc. And they still haven't updated the chart from the beginning of the campaign:

yeah. i think we'll see a full version of that chart soon, once they're done changing anything.

that said, some people are being kinda dumb when it comes to not understand what "this also includes the X tier". there are people in the KS comments who literally think they're not getting the game with higher tiers.

They're always be stupid people with more money than sense. Of course it doesn't help that KS doesn't allow reward tiers to be amended to take account of added tiers below. I know there's a very good reason for this but still......

Reading through older Suzuki articles is more enlightening knowing a) his influence on the modern gaming industry, particularly 3D/Model 1-2, and b) in a world where Shenmue 3 did not exist.

1up (James Mielke)'s disappearance of Yu Suzuki is excellent and just shows how neglected the man has been in a decade (cry). That said his work post leaving Sega seemed to always have been focused on going for Shenmue 3 despite his edict that he likes to work on things new.

Also features Tak Hirai from Neilo

Liked Mielke dancing around the hypothetical Shenmue 3 questions. Now that it's happening, these answers are probably true now :D (eg. streamlined development, Unreal Engine etc)

JM: I play games to do things I can't do in real life. Do you think games have become too real? If you were to do Shenmue 3, for example, would you take the same approach and make it super realistic, or would you take a different approach?

YS: The concept for Shenmue 3 already exists, so... [Laughs] The world of Shenmue 1 and 2 expanded outward. So, for example, in the original games, of all the data used for dialogue in the game, the main characters' dialogue was about 20%. The remaining 80% was dialogue by characters other than the two main characters. But Shenmue 3 doesn't expand outward, but inward. A lot of the dialogue is used for the main character and especially dialogue with Shenhua. They talk about a lot of different, deeper things. For example, and I can't say too much, but here's an example.

This is not actually in the game, but as an example to give you an idea of what I mean by deeper dialogue, when Shenhua and Ryo are at home, Shenhua will ask Ryo if he would like to drink tea or coffee and the player will select one or the other. Or, Shenhua will ask Ryo a hypothetical question like: "There are four animals; a monkey, cat, dog and bird. You are crossing the river but you need to leave one behind. Which one will you leave behind?" And the player has to choose one. Shenhua will ask lots and lots of questions like these and the answers will get stored in the game and affect the outcome of the player's relationship with other characters. It's like a personality test. For example, the person who leaves behind the monkey is the type of person who leaves their wife.

COUGH COUGH COUGH

Hi Mielke hope BitSummit is going well for you

Heck just link to the Dojo for past interviews.

Have they said anything about PayPal beyond "we're looking into it"?
No.

I think that's for the best. Save Paypal for the very end in order to keep as much of the total as possible on the Kickstarter. Higher Kickstarter total will bring more prestige to the project.

don't paypal take a cut too? that'll be both them and kickstarter getting a bit of the money.

if anybody here is waiting for paypal because they don't want kickstarter to have their money, well... you might want to reconsider.

Yes, they both take a cut, though I believe Paypal is lower.

What I was meaning was that the more people donate through the Kickstarter page the higher Shenmue will go on Kickstarter's list of most successful projects. The total reported on the Kickstarter page at the end of the campaign will be the one that defines people's perception of how much interest there was in the project.

Makes sense to consolidate as much funding on the Kickstarter for as long as possible, whilst allowing stragglers to jump aboard Paypal at the end.

oh yes definitely.

i was just speaking to the people who don't want to give kickstarter a cut. they'll get their money with or without paypal, but the paypal people will get another cut off that too.

if anybody wants to pledge, now is the time.

do the stretch goals include shemue 1 & 2 remasters? bc if not ill obviously never play the 3rd.
Yu would love to release remasters, but he can't because SEGA owns the first two games. They have been holding this series hostage for years.

It is likely that SEGA will finally act on re-releasing the original games now that they have seen the huge interest generated by the Kickstarter for Shenmue III.

Sorry you never got to play the original games, they are fantastic.

As others have said, Yu has no say over a Shenmue 1 and 2 remaster but what is included in a stretch goal is a Yakuza style recap movie to get you up to speed. This goal was reached early in the campaign.

i've tried to remain positive about awesome japan since the ps4 physical version, but they really bungled that new $1200 tier today. we've made no progress for two hours because despite the backer number rising, i keep seeing the figures going up and down in increments of $200 as people step up and step down to the capsule toy tier.

hopefully this is it for higher tier stuff. it's time for a media blitz and add-ons.

Can they update the chart? this is usually a problem with KS especially when they add tiers but charts ALWAYS fix this.

An updated chart would be a great way to combat any confusion. Sadly that can't rectify the high tiers paling in comparison to some of the new rewards added today. A bunch of people will drop from higher tiers whilst a bunch of people will go up. Not much progress to be had unfortunately. Seems they were too focused on trying to get a tier for every possible gap in the list and overlooked how saturated the rewards would become.

Too few tiers at the start of the campaign and too many at the end, lol.

Yeah, I think they've maybe over-egged the pudding on the reward tiers. This last week really needs to focus on reaching out to new backers and encouraging them to pledge, rather than adding a bunch more options for existing backers to mess around with. Still, we'll see what happens, both for the Kickstarter itself and possible post-KS crowdfunding.

Yep, they shouldn't introduce any more high tiers, it's just backers shufling around at this point and very little gain. I mean it's good that there are some pretty sweet things left for the final push, but what they need is a game plan for the last week, not more and more tiers.

This is a very good article about the end of KS campaigns, and while the press part is probably gonna come from various news outlets reporting that this is the biggest KS ever they should probably focus on communication and maybe a nice little surprise for the end.

And also, Awesome Japan, if you are reading this. There are no fucking weekends!

Can someone tweet to Yu today to ask if add-ons will be supported? That would bring A LOT of funds. Many people want to add items seperately in addition to their tiers like a digital copy, a toy capsule, etc. Kickstarter campaigns have done this.

i think this should be limited to just extra copies of the game. or the telecom tier at the very most. we cannot go through another cannibalisation of the other tiers by letting people pick and choose stuff like the art book, music cd, etc on top of their base pledge.

Yeah I'm with you here. Why the hell introducing new tiers all the time and so late into the campaign? Would have preferred more incentive to go from e.g. $29-$45 and $300-$500 (the last one sucks as of now by simple math considering the jump from $100-$120).
It feels a bit random and aimed towards Croesus all the time with too much focus on $500+ tiers. A bunch of in-game items (which they should avoid unless they are pure cosmetics!), ending up rather devaluating the $29 and $60 tiers instead of giving a more encouraging incentive to go above by adding to the existing higher up tiers. I'm confused and a bit disappointed and agitated. They really believe in voids between both stretch goals and pledge tiers. :(

Because people keep asking for more and more.

not anymore it seems. on here and on the KS page people are asking for AJ to slow their roll. cedric biscay agrees too. from here on out, they better just leave the tiers alone unless it's a very limited big-time pledge tier that there are only like one or two of.

AJ have been a complete disaster throughout this campaign. Too many tiers priced at too high a price with conflicting information on what each tier offers in the way of rewards. I can see problems down the road when it comes to disbursing prizes.

I hope other companies planning on utilising their "talents" in managing their Kickstarter's don't go near them.

Because people keep asking for more and more.

The thing is they still don't get it. People have also been asking for more lower end tiers, Sub 100,or sub $200 at the very least. The bulk of funding will always come from there, and they have done 2 things, the Telecom card, and the PS4 physical, 2 things that did amazingly for them. Might tweet at Cedric again. He at least seems to notice.
