Shocking: Star Wars: The Force Awakens expected to make lots of money

As one executive puts it, if Star Wars: The Force Awakens doesn't score the biggest debut ever when it hits theaters Dec. 18, he'll "run up and down Sunset Boulevard naked." So how high could J.J. Abrams' reboot fly? The top U.S. opening is The Avengers, which launched to $207.4 million in May 2012 from 4,349 theaters. Disney's sequel, Avengers: Age of Ultron (May 1), could become the new champ, but many believe Force Awakens has every chance of outrunning them both, even with the distraction of Christmas. Globally it could rake in nearly $540 million, topping the three-day record set by the final Harry Potter film ($483.2 million). "If it pleases the fans of the old movies and also appeals to kids, watch out," says box-office analyst Phil Contrino.

Disney and Lucasfilm certainly are doing everything they can to create a mega-event. The second trailer, unveiled April 16 at the Star Wars Celebration in Anaheim, generated a euphoric response. Amboee Brand Intelligence reports that digital consumption of the trailer vastly exceeded interest in Furious 7, which has grossed $1.15 billion in its first 19 days. Ditto for Fifty Shades of Grey, another worldwide blockbuster. Based on that data, Amboee is predicting a global debut of $533.2 million to $539.5 million.

Insiders say Force Awakens will get the widest release ever, meaning at least 4,500 locations in North America (Twilight: Eclipse went out in 4,468), although Disney won't comment. The film faces little competition; the only other new title daring to open Dec. 18 is Sisters, Universal's Tina Fey-Amy Poehler comedy. The most earned in any three-day period at the U.S. box office is $269 million Dec. 25-27 in 2009. Driving it was Avatar, which opened a week earlier to a respectable $77 million on its way to a record global haul of $2.8 billion. So Contrino is less intrigued with Star Wars' opening than its final outcome. "It's in the same spot as Avatar, which played and played and played," he says. "Force Awakens will hit $1 billion without blinking. If it's really good, it could cross $2 billion."

It's going up against movies like Sisters, Tina Fey/Amy Poehler's new movie.

They could hit a billion in under 12 parsecs.

It's going to be the highest grossing movie of the year, there is no question whatsoever. Both domestic and worldwide. The hype already dwarfs that of Avengers and we still have 8 months to go. And it not only pretty much sucked up all the room in the air so the Batman v Superman trailer came and went without many even noticing.

Anyone can predict it will be the biggest movie of the year, that is a safe bet.

The big question is will it top 2 billion?

I can't believe someone took the time to write that article.

they got paid though $$$$$$$ i'd write that for free
why can't i have a job like that

"star wars merchandise will sell a lot during this holiday" , there's the next article, and yeah , force awakens will make a shit load of money

I just don't know how the prequels aren't affecting this film. Did people actually...like them?

I think it's... both?

-For the ones who liked them: "MORE STAR WARS, WOOOOO!"
-For the ones who disliked them: "This is going to be a return to the REAL Star Wars before the prequels ruined it!"

It's a sequel to Return of the Jedi. Han Solo coming out and saying "We're home" was a good way to show we are getting back to the old Star Wars.

Bingo. As far as I can tell both sides are just as equally hyped.

Two billion when its all said and done or I change my avatar to this picture of a purple panda permenatley.

Yep. If this movie turns out to be great, it will be a true return of a beloved movie series from alot of people's childhood and then you have the fans that grew up on the prequels. It would be record breaking huge. I can't think of a return of any other movie franchise that could possibly challenge it.

Ugh. Gonna sound real nerdy when I tell you that parsecs are a measure of distance and not speed / time.

Anyways, you forgot News, to your Shocking News headline :P

It could do really well, or extremely well. Depending on how good it is.

I think the Fey/Poehler comedy will do fine. Counter-programming is often pretty successful, especially when put up again big movies.

I think Disney is really going to nail the whole "must see movie event" Deal. I mean, they've done an excellent job so far and I don't see that changing.

As for the prequels, yes they weren't great but they were popular and besides, this is the star wars that people have been waiting for for 30 years. Yes, we got the prequels, but I feel what we've all really wanted is the sequel trilogy and now we're getting it. With the WW market having expanded significantly since the time of Episode III, and Disney's marketing force behind it, theres no way Episode VII doesn't shatter records.

I just really wish they'd actually use Episode VII in the title.

Yeah guys I am fully on the side of it cruising to 2 bil worldwide but due to December it won't get the weekend record. But that doesn't make a difference.

Yes, but JJ Abrams has a pretty good, if not likely, chance to be the second director ever to join the 2 billion dollar club with James Cameron.

Agreed, JJ has a pretty good chance of cracking the Cameron marker.

I honestly think releasing in December is going to be good for it, there's going to be absolutely no competition around it.

The prequels made a ton of moneybdespite being disliked by many stalwart fans which just showed the basic lure of the franchise still.

IIRC Phantom did close to $1 billion despite the hate, Clones did dip a fair bit showing some negative reaction and Sith showed a healthy jump from Clones as people returned to see Kenobi/Anakin fight (which was poor in the end).

The big question for the new film is will it be better than the prequels and thus not only draw in the baseline crowd which (going by the sequels and considering inflation) should account for over $1 billion anyway but draw back the diehards big time and generate a lot of repeat views?

Or to put it another way going by historic evidence if it's bad it should still break $1 billion just with lure of franchise and return of core original cast. Now if it's good and it handles Luke, Han and Leia well... Skies the limit and Avatar like performance is possible.

As an aside man remember how pissed the core fans were when Phantom turned out to be a pretty poor film and Titanic easily outperformed it? That saw some epic meltdowns.

I'm not convinced JJ is a great director on the evidence but he's solid and good with effects heavy sequences so we'll see if he delivers an Into Darkness (awful), a Star Trek (solid enough with a some strong sequences) or an Empire Strikes Back (which did okay with a solid professional like Kersher at the helm after all).

It's all gonna be down to the script in the end and the performances.
