Much better goal scorer? Lol. Okay then.

Subban is a dynamic goal scorer on D. Weber has a hard slap shot. It's hard as hell, sure. But it's still not really comparable to Subban's scoring skill.

Subban's best goal scoring season would be tied for Weber's 8th best. So, he is much better.

I see the tease is out for Montreal media's upcoming character assassination of Subban

No. Stop.

This is just a quick and super messy comparison to get the point across, but over the last four years, the Canadiens' possession stats dropped ~5% when Subban left the ice, while the Predators possession stats went up by ~2% without Weber on the ice. So if a defenceman, especially a top-line d, is tasked with suppressing shots, clearly Subban is doing something right. This isn't even taking into account his offensive contributions to the team. Over that same period, the Canadiens have a goal share of 54.4% when Subban is on the ice, and Subban scores 1.08 points per 60 minutes. In comparison, the Preds score 50.9% of all goals while Weber is on the ice, and Weber scores .90 points per 60.

While typing this up, I noticed this chart of rolling percentages on Twitter that better illustrates my point. It compares the relative corsi percentage of each player vs. their respective team:

Subban is an otherworldly talent and has been demonstrably better than Weber for some time.

It's a bad trade. If it was Weber and a 1st or 2nd, then fine but a straight across trade? Lol. Good thing I'm not a habs fan or I'd be beyond pissed.

I'm a Preds fan and don't know how to feel. The new guy is exciting, but Weber was a franchise player, and now he's.. gone.

The more I look at Weber's recent stats and read about this trade, the worse it sounds. Is Bergevin on crack?

I feel there's something more with trading PK. I think more will come out in years to come on why Subban was traded. There has to be more. He's going to destroy the Central Division.

Ah okay. So it's okay to use pure numbers here, but then you say Weber is much better defensively, which is easy to disprove with the very same statistics. So, which avenue do you want to use?

Some things aren't on the stat sheets.

I like Weber and it's not going to be immediately disastrous, but in 3 or 4 years this is going to look really bad for Montreal.

Let's Pray Sergachev can be our Subban and Markov replacement. That kid is going to be special. I had the same feeling with Sergachev when Subban was Drafted.

Straight up trading your 27 year old star for a less talented guy 4 years older. Interesting strategy. I don't know a great deal aboug hockey, but reading about this and looking at the player profiles, I feel like they could've gotten more if they were that insistant on trading him away.

PK Subban's single season career high is 15 goals

Weber had 20 this year, his career high is 23 which he did twice and has never scored less than PK's career high in any season where he played 70-82 games.

Weber is the better goal scorer come on. PK's career high is Weber's career floor (over a complete season).

Dude come on, you can argue overall superiority but when we talk about scoring goals, yes that's just a numbers game

Weber wasn't even the best defensemen on his own team, it will be hilarious seeing him next to robo-Markov while Subban & Josi light it up.

So much hyperbole...
From everywhere.
What part about Subban being 5 years younger than Weber and statistically better than Weber in every category aside from goal scoring is hyperbole? Subban is better than Weber today and will be much better than him 3 years from now. Weber has more goals than Subban but Subban is 2nd in total defensemen point totals over the last 3-4 years. This trade is a fucking joke and if you resort to "leadership and veteran presence" then you might as well go post youtube comments.

You have to understand, it's about rispeck

lol exactly. Gary bettman is happy tho. Good salesman for the game of hockey just went in a market that will appreciate him.

I feel for Habs fans on this one. Hopefully a colossal failure like this can inspire some organizational change.

My Oilers got fleeced today too, but I think we are a better team for it. In fact, Id bet we could actually make the playoffs at this point. That being said, any more CLEAR loss trades, and our offence wont sustain it. McDavid is amazing, but hes still a teenager.

The Oilers weren't exactly trading from a position of strength. They needed more D on their team, and they couldn't exactly trade up for it.

To be fair, the more important thing about the Hall trade is that they got a defenseman *and* cap room -- which can be used towards another defenseman.

ITT: some people confusing goals (an event that relies more on luck/randomness than skill, although skill can reduce that gap to a degree) versus generating a scoring chance through breaking up a play, taking possession of the puck and getting it in the zone (all fully controllable events).

Subban is much better at the latter, which is what is generally expected of a defenseman - you know, preventing the other team from scoring and helping your team score goals by setting up plays. Weber is good at scoring goals, sure, but his overall defensive play is long proven to be inferior to Subban. And you certainly aren't paying Weber 7.8mil AAV to score 15-23 goals.

Tell that to Bergevin. He thinks he won this trade.

I dont see how trading for Taylor Hall would not have been 100 times better than this, just in terms of "contract". What a bad fucking trade.

One thing I found odd in the press conference is how Bergevin kept talking in past tense when talking about the value pf Weber. He kept saying things like "at the time we made the transaction" or "it looked like", as if something came out afterwards that made him realize it was a bad trade. I'm pretty sure the organization believes they fucked up and its too late, and this was coming trough Bergevin's words.

In police investigations, they pay very close attention to the words the suspects use because it often indicates that the suspect is actually trying to avoid lying by carefully avoiding or using certain words, and that's how it sounded. I'll try to get a transcript tonight and get the quotes.

But really, I think the organization knows they fucked up, after signing the deal.
