Should Microsoft be given a third chance with PC Gaming ?

Depends on what they are willing to bring to the platform. I will ignore any inferior/slimmed down version of their major IPs like Forza Apex but will gladly buy their full fledged AAA exclusives on PC as long as no features is missing.

Seriously Microsoft? Seriously?

Doubly funny is the reason they gave: UWP.

Until there is a evidence of them changing their ways for a sustained period I want no part of it again.

They are already fucking up in ways beyond belief. Who releases a sim racing game in 2016 with no wheel and peripheral support on the PC?

If that isn't evidence that they haven't learnt a single thing from their previous forays into the PC gaming market I don't know what is.

And yet... there are some people still trying to defend them. It's astounding.

Third chance? Your stated first chance is in the late 2000s and completely ignores Microsoft's surprisingly decent PC offerings before then. Y'know, Microsoft Entertainment Pack, Pandora's Box, Midtown Madness, Dungeon Siege, the PC version of Metal Gear Solid, et al.. Off-hand, I'd say that was a remarkably good starting point...

They definitely did start faltering around the time of the Xbox 360, though (if not original Xbox), what with GFWL and stuff. I dunno, I'd gladly see them return to the quality of their 90s PC offerings if they're willing to put in the effort to get there.

Formerly console exclusive games coming to PC? Fine, I'll use your store. Completely fucking up the openness of PC gaming with your crazy restrictions? Come on, man! You almost had it!

I'm interested, but I'm not buying a game on their store until they allow me to turn off V-Sync. They also need to make cross-buy a permanent, regular feature and not limit it to pre-orders like they're doing with Quantum Break.

The decision is simple to me.
Having to choose between Valve or Microsoft controlling the software market i would choose Valve.
I mean Ms market share is basically zero and despite they already begin with their typical bullshit in the form of UWA.

I am willing to listen and see how their efforts pan out. If they're discounting games like other stores, I'll partake. Aggressive pricing wins me over.

I am not bothered by the lack of mods, multi-GPU support, exclusive full screen or VSYNC toggle. I fit their target demographic.

It's demonstrably worse. It sandboxes the game from your whole system, so it ends up being like playing a console game in terms of customization, modding and third party app/hardware support.
Yeah, I wanted to say worse, but GFWL tried to make you pay for online, so it's almost a tie :P. Of course this is something that probably is going end up in the W10 store too if it gets big enough.

They can take as many chances as they want.

They won't be getting my business until they do things right though. Not buying games from their marketplace especially with the limitations they have on them. Don't think I would buy from them anyway, just prefer to have my games on steam.

However I still get non steam games from time to time, origin etc. But origin has come a long way from when it first came out.

Give them all the chances, if they keep fucking up just avoid them. If they start to improve and listen/do what PC gamers want them to do then purchase their products.

I really do think they want to get good about this, this MS is not the old MS we new several years ago. Sure, their current implementation sucks balls with many things, but I think with time things will change/evolve for the better.

If it doesn't as I mentioned earlier, avoid them.

Sure they can be given a chance, like the Browns are given a chance every year to win the SB. Its not impossible, it could work out.

Different times where 2 years ago. :p
XBox One was released when GFWL was still a thing :p

I thought it was closed before XB1. It doesn't change much though... I do not intend to make Windows Store my only storefront of choice. As I don't intend to do it with Steam or any other service. As long as they release what I want, with good performance and decent prices, I am susceptible to buy at their store (and I most certainly will). Without being delusional to believe I'm 100% guaranteed to have that collection at my disposal for the rest of my life.

It will be a natural process... With bad performance and / or bad prices, people will continue ignoring their store. However UWP is a much bigger and audacious project compared to GFWL, that pretty much dictates the future of Windows on phones, tablets and even on desktop. They won't just close it. If people demand things such as modding or v-sync they will probably work around that either, for their own good.

This is just a lie.

I bought Lost Planet 2 during a sale last week and played co-op with my friend.

Bulletstorm is unplayable because of GFWL . I own the non steam version, and because it requires you to log into GFWL to even access the games menu, you can't even play it with a crack.

Makes me pretty mad.

Same.

And no, I will not give Microsoft another chance.

Why?

Honestly, why?

For, who's not desperate for their first party lineup, and is perfectly comfortable with how PC games work now, and like services like Steam and GOG, why should I give them the benefit of doubt here?

It seems like the best thing you hear about their current push for PC games, even from the supports, is "maybe it won't be that bad?". And that's not really not tempting.

When it comes to what they're doing now, what's in it for me? Why is Win10 gaming by Microsoft better for me, then what I have?

There are great signs of fail even before they release their first exclusive on PC.

It's not like the PC platform is starved for games.

Edit: Holy... didn't know they released Gears today.

They need to fix the issues that the Windoes store has. I guess the fact that they're ware of the problem is something? But we don't know how fast they'll be to get fixing.

Also as much as i think it's cool that they're bringing ports to Windows, I think it would be a big step for them to bring back some of their more PC focused IP's like Age of Empires back.

As Ive said before MS really should have been up to speed and at least match their competitors. I think thats the minimum that was required considering their history with PC gaming.

Im not interested in seeing how they improve it because in all honesty it should have been straightened out before they launched. I dont see any reason to give them the benfit of the doubt, nor time to fix it.

Ultimately what theyve done is by design, it functionally works how they want it to work and while theyll make concessions (like they had to with the XO launch) it wont affect where they want to take these initiatives to.

Guaranteed, they are going to fuck this up. They are going to fuck you over. And they are going to fuck up PC gaming to some degree, just like they did before. Mark my words. Quote me in 18 months. Do whatever. It's going to happen.

The 2007 Microsoft isn't even idencital to the 2016 Microsoft in terms of leadship and such, so yea.

So how come 2016 Microsoft won't let me play the fucking games I paid for?

The second they charge for online gaming on PC they lose me.

I'm also pretty sure they're going to try this again.

Of course they are going to fuck it up. Heck, i have been dealing with MS for work for almost 20 years and they haven't really changed all that much internally.

I will give them zero benefit of the doubt.

Its up to Microsoft to earn PC gamers trust. So far their handling of the death of GFWL and refusing to let people download old games they own is one giant mark against them.

You don't give companies a chance OP, they earn your business or they don't.

If MS get it right they'll earn the business, if not then they'll fail to achieve their goals.

Same as every business.

They're welcome to keep trying. If they get it right somewhere along the way, so much the better. Not holding my breath, but hey, there's a chance.

I'm not opposed to the idea behind the new Windows Store, especially if it's going to get them to release more previously-Xbone-exclusives (ReCore, QB, etc.) on PC.

Even Steam was awful when it first released way back in the day. If MS irons out the kinks in the new storefront, of which there are many, I'm willing to give it a shot.

I don't even know what GFWL is and I didn't even know that MS had done this whole PC console thing before.I'm sad that the xbox one is leaving the console business since I liked the PS and MS rivalry. So I guess they will compete against steam right?

This will be MS in a couple of years after yet another failed venture into PC gaming and blaming sales and customers

People keep bringing this up, just like they did back when Microsoft launched Games for Windows Live.

The problem this time is that we know what we're dealing with. This is not a "wait and see" situation. Microsoft had a shot at the Steam thing and they fucked it up. They aren't starting from zero anymore. This shit did not reset. They're well into the Negative Zone. They have to work their asses off just to get to benefit-of-the-doubt status.

Can't comment on that, but I did need to log in GFWL to play Lost Planet 2.

It kicked me out of the game to update GFWL, then it had to download my profile. It took a few tries until it worked, but it did.

Microsoft is on the same page as they were 11 years ago and still not doing what a PC gaming should be it is an open platform and there still limiting it like it's a console.

I have no faith in them at all those requirements of those games? pretty nuts if you ask me i think those games are not optimized.

Instead of GFWL we get the fucking windows store nearly GFWL 2.0 to be honest.

All they had to do was release their games on their store without the issues.

Yet they f**ked that up.

I'd rather use steam than any other store but I don't have issues with U-play etc and I wouldn't of had issues with MS store.

Also just read about no Wheel support for Forza.

Astounding.

It's 2016. Most decisions made by Microsoft in the past year or so have been great, from gaming to workplace.

So, yeah, why not.

I don't even know what GFWL is and I didn't even know that MS had done this whole PC console thing before.

oh my sweet summer child

Listen, they tried so hard to do this before, they actually launched Live on PC as a paid multiplayer service. You had to have a Gold subscription and everything. It was roundly rejected, because it's the PC where multiplayer has always been free so of course it was, and then Microsoft suddenly stopped releasing games for the platform and essentially abandoned the GFWL initiative, with the exception of a couple of small pushes later on.

Gears of War and Halo 2 and Viva Pinata came out on PC. Shadowrun had cross platform play with the Xbox version. Lots of third party games somehow ended up saddled with the awful GFWL client software for updates and achievements, long after Microsoft had given up. There's a thread somewhere on NeoGAF where you can see when companies started patching their old games to remove GFWL, and how happy that made people. (There are still games stuck with it because their publishers can't be bothered, though.)

If they get their PC offerings to a point where its acceptable to the mass market at large? Sure. I don't know about other people, but once it reaches that threshold I'm not going to boycott their offerings out of some arbitrary principle for past transgressions.

Absolutely not. Microsoft will do nothing unless it benefits them financially or gets you to buy in to their eco-system. The days of just making a great game (Age of Empires, etc.) and getting money for it, are long past for them (and us, it seems).
