Should Nintendo's Next Handheld Include or Abandon Dual Screen

With Nintendo making an announcement for NX soon there has been a lot of speculation on what the NX may be. Speculation has ranged from a home console, handheld, phone, to a hybrid handheld-home console. For me I'd prefer the last as I said years ago this is what they should do.

Regardless, if it does end up being a handheld in some shape or form would you want them to include or abandon the dual screen? I was never a huge fan of dual screen personally and found it to be more of a nuisance than anything, though many people would disagree. Abandoning it would also allow you to get more power out of it and have more room for things such as dual analog.

Anyways, what would you all like?

I want it to have the dual screen setup. It is great for games that use a map because there's no clutter on the main screen.

Include, definitely. I've got no room in my life for a non-clamshell, non-dual-screen handheld. The perfect design for portable games.

Please just move on at this point. I've never cared for the additional screen. I just want a single high quality display.

I wouldn't mind if they lost the clamshell as well.

I want dual screens kept. The form just makes sense for a handheld console.
They can drop 3d from it though.

Sticking with one screen for more power certainly didn't make enough difference to save the vita at any rate.

Clamshell is useful for handhelds and the wide shapes is perfect for controls. You'd have a space on the bottom half anyway so may as well keep the screen.

I think I have tired of the gimmick. But I wouldn't throw a fit if it stayed around. But, more than anything else, I want 3D to go.
Third time round and it wouldn't really be a gimmick, just a standard Nintendo handheld feature.

I like the dual screen and I like the clamshell design. I think the ds design is a winner and they should continue to improve on it.

They should bring the screens all the way to the edge so that when it opens up a game can have it displayed as one large screen if it so desires.

On the other hand. If they get rid of the bottom screen I'd hope they finally go with proper dual sticks.

Well a flip screen is one area by which their portables are immediately discernible from phones/tablets so keeping it is probably a good idea for that alone.

Do I want for one? No.

Abandon. Not that I have any hate for it, but I think it'd be for the best for them to make a clean break and not be potentially tied down by it.

Definitely they should keep the dual screen.

They just need to stop using the DS name.

Include, please!

I do not like the way the Vita is built at all. Always paranoid that I'll damage the screen.

But my major concern is size. The OG 3DS is gigantic and we never got a 3DS Lite, which makes me very sad. Hope the next handheld is clamshell and smaller.

There is no reason to remove it.

Dual screens enhance gaming so much, even when it's just used for inventory. It removes clutter, it makes things easier.

I dread the thought of going back to a single screen Pokémon experience.

I'd love if they keep the dual screen, but please, increase the resolution and actually improve the touch screen.

DS line wasnt the first to have clamshell design. So just because if they abandon Dual Screen, doesnt mean it wont have a clamshell design

As I play mainly RPG's, keep it.

It doesn't have to do anything revolutionary, just having a map or inventory on the second screen is a huge deal that saves so much time and hassle.

Nope, NX should have mobile/tablet link on baselevel OS.
A dozen games have now done it well since Battlefield 4 (commander mode)

Lets devs decide to use it, since most devs already have shown they dont barely care about putting effort into the DS/3DS/WiiU 2nd screen

That seems a bit difficult to hold when on the move.

I'd get rid of it. It adds weight, cost, and reduces battery life. Plus, the thing is pretty useless. My one concern would be backwards comparability, though I suppose there are some ways around that (using a button to toggle between which screen is displayed).

Yeah, that's kind of what I'm getting at. It's beyond the point of novelty and it wouldn't excite me anymore. It would just sort of "be". And I'm 100% okay with that.

That really wouldn't work for quite a few games. Trying to aim an egg in Yoshi's Touch and Go, for instance.

If the screen ends up being 16:9 (which is should), there could be a way to turn the system sideways and get similar screen proportions.

I really like the vertical layout of the DS.

Keep it. The dual-screen setup is so very useful, reverting back to single-screen would be a massive downgrade in terms of functionality and reducing UI clutter.

Dual screen is very good imo and even 3D can be a nice addition for some games but change is even better.

Now I understand that it always had been Nintendo's thing to offer new way to play but since people seem to want more and more the same exact control systems gen after gen then I guess they'll go for something more "classical".... sadly :/

So no I don't want them to abandon it and I used to be prepared for novelty each gen regarding Nintendo... now I'm ready for them to be more cautious (I hope I'm wrong... I'll always give my money more easily to companies which are taking risks).

I don't know how much an extra screen costs, but I'd prefer that money goes towards one bigger higher-quality screen or even better specs to enhance games.

Tough call.

Two screens are great for some games, useless for others. I do like the clamshell design..but it's clear that two screens costs in terms of money, weight and resources.

Of course things like the patented clickable scroll wheels shoulder buttons could help limit some of the losses of dropping dual screen set up (due to the increased ease of selecting multiple items, potential to zoom in and out of the action easily ..which might negate the need for a separate map).

I'm inclined to think they need a setup that allows for the easiest porting of mobile games. They also need costs down to make sure the price point is as low as possible.

That means a single touchscreen is probably the way to go.

I like the idea of a dual screen that can double as a gamepad replacement for Wii U BC.
Pull the second screen up from the back of the unit - i..e it slots in behind the main screen.

They probably will abandon it

I'd argue the opposite, though what I expect (hope) is for the bottom screen to get smaller but remain the same resolution and the top screen to get bigger and have a higher DPI. This would enable the system to continue to be backwards compatible and still clean up the hud on the top screen. You don't need super high DPI screens for what's essentially just a HUD/map screen.
