Should the Xbox Series S have gone the PS5 digital edition route?

Exactly this. And scalpers aren't exactly picking them up to make money on like they did in the begining. The reason you can't get PS5s and XSXs is because of bots. Of course hardcore sony fans will always predict gloom and doom over Xbox.

Not according to Sony's recent press release. Going continue into 2022 at very least.

MS are struggling as well with producing enough XSX.

The odd one out of the bunch, is the Series S, either they have managed to provide an obsurd number or demand has dried up. Take your pick.

Scalpers only buy the consoles because they are able to sell the consoles at an inflated price. There is enough demand for the consoles to warrant that whole shady practice.

If they couldn't sell them at a premium they wouldn't buy the console in the first place.

Question is why don't people, even scalpers, want the Series S?

I predict demand for all gaming hardware will shrink over the next 3 months in the UK, as we have our vaccine programme in order, it's summer and people will be heading back out to the pubs, bars, clubs and going on holiday and stuff.

The XSS is a casual console. Casual gamers don't rush out and buy something the minute it hits store shelves. The XSS also didn't get the same promotion the XSX received. It didn't even get announced at the same time. Outside of the US the Xbox brand is smaller. There was a story out of India where people weren't even aware what the XSS was or what it could do but once they heard about the Game pass service and saw it's price they were willing to give it a shot. The adoption of the XSS was never intended to be a flash in the pan but a slow burn as the generation moves on.

Casual market don't look very interested.

The casual market was interested in the Wii though.

As well as the..

Nintendo Switch.
PS4.
Nintendo DS.

They certainly didn't start their lives sitting on shelves until people suddenly noticed them after 6 to 24 months.

Series S doesn't have the BC benefit though, right? Only reason I wouldn't buy one. Otherwise I would cause I don't have a 4k TV or even a TV capable of HDR.

1060/580 cant hit consistent 60 fps in recent titles. clearly that target has shifted to rtx 2060/gtx1080/rx 5600xt

1060 won't hold back the generation, as 760 didn't

games became unplayable on gtx 760/gtx 960 in quick fashion back in 2014-2016.

In hindsight, I think so. With supply constraints, the increased demand from a lower price point is kind of unnecessary. Plus, digital only makes a ton of sense with Gamepass. I think we'll see this SKU eventually. I know that's the one I'd buy. Loving my PS5 so far, but I'd feel a lot more comfortable with a digital only Xbox with Gamepass than the digital only PS5.

I think the expectation was low demand due to Covid, but kind of the exact opposite happened (high demand and low supply). In normal times, that cheap SKU may have been a much different story.

Why would midrange target be a set framerate/resolution? My 5700xt cannot hit 1080/60 on MS FS 2020. is it not "midrange"?

But yes, you can easily get 1080/60 on a 1060/580 on games like Immortals, RE8, Valhalla, etc. might have to sacrifice some settings, but it's not unreasonable.
But honestly the target really doesn't matter resolutions and framerates don't define load in itself, IQ does. Some RT games struggle to get 1080/60 native on even a 2080 or even a 3080 without DLSS.

I'm on a 1080p TV and I probably still will be by the time I'm in the market for an Xbox later this gen....I won't be considering the XSS though,XSX for me.

in the videos you've posted, 1060 struggles to go beyond 50 fps in valhalla in many instances. drops to 40s 45s in immortals in combats (same with valhalla). these values are nowhere near a locked 60 fps experience it used give the gamers 2 years ago. i don't even want to talk about its cyberpunk performance

besides, 5700xt should hit 60 fps in msfs 2020. you're quite likely CPU bottlenecked



for example in this video, there's a huge bottleneck. this has nothing to do with 5700xt. this game is a CPU hog and it's impossible to feed GPUs. frankly, flight simulator is not a game where you need 60 FPS anyways

bruh, there's no point arguing, i have 3 frustrated gtx 1060/rx580 friends myselfs. they're unsatisfied with games that are mostly released in the last 1.5-2 years. they feel like their gpus time has come.

if there weren't stock issues, almost all of them would upgrade to rtx 3060/rx 6700xt in a heartbeat. i'm not joking.

even the rtx 3070 has seen an enormous increase in steam gpu charts. if rtx 3060 had proper stocks, it would probably de-throne gtx 1060 as the most used "price/performance" gpu

They are mostly at 60, you are nitpicking scenarios, they are very playable.
It doesn't hit 60 on FS 2020, I don't know what CPU that guy has, but I have a i9 9900k and it hits 100% GPU utilization yet framerate is still in the low 50s on high settings.

But again, this shit literally doesn't matter, midrange isn't a resolution target/framerate target otherwise a 1060 wouldn't be midrange 2 years ago since AC Origins also doesn't run at a consistent 1080/60 at high settings on it.

Perfect for people who only play 2 or 3 games.

Also Fortnite, Minecraft, Rocket League, etc @1080p don't need 10TF. SeriesS will easily go down to $199. Lot's of Parents are going to get kids hooked to XBox.

Casual market doesn't buy game consoles at launch. Hard core gamers do. 6-24 months is a pretty damn big period of time. You sure want want to predict the XSS won't sell for 2 years? What am I saying of course you would seeing how you also predicted the XSS would perform worse and worse as the generation proceeded. Believing that as the XSS continues to get new games with raytracing is pretty funny.

Odd seeing people wishing, hoping, praying that the XSS is a failure. I assume you aren't talking about the largest market on the planet. The XSS is consistently sold out in the US. This is after a pretty bad generation where Xbox got little positive press. Still outperformed the GameCube and WiiU which you left off your list. Success is determined at the end of a generation not the beginning. Ask Sony with the PS3.

They should have made XSS a bit more powerful, and sold it for $349.99. It may be a 1440p system now...but in a few years, it'll be a 1080p system more often than not.
 
My honest opining is Yes. They should have just launched a discless XsX.

If the Series S cost 250 bucks or less, I'd feel differently, but the power gap between Series S and PS5 (digital) at only 100 by is difference is a hard sell for me.

I thought about getting a Series S for my 1440p monitor and came really close to pulling the trigger, but ultimately I decided to wait for either a digital edition XsX or first price drop on standard XsX (which won't be for awhile, I know)
 
Also not sure howvselling millions of units in the first few months somehow counts as a launch failure now for the s? That's some seriously twisted logic.

While I'm certain it will be the first of the Series family to inevitably get phased out in a number of years as new products in the Series line are introduced, it was the right call to make for right now.

I could afford to drop the cash for a Series X, not everybody can. You're not building any form of gaming PC that can do what the Series S can do for $300. This ain't the Golden era of 2 years ago which a roaring economy with disposable income in people's pockets.

There's a much smaller difference between the iPhone 11 and 12 than the Xbox series s and x. Consumers see no tangible speed difference between the 12 and 11, and the 11 actually has better battery life without the 5g that most don't even have. I used more examples than just anyway.
Xbox is dead worldwide for the simple reason of no good games, something that is still an issue to this day. Making halo infinite THE definitive next generation experience would be a good step.

PC ports are an after thought for multi platform releases almost across the board. As always, with the release of the new consoles the minimum requirements will shift up. And this should realistically be the least year we saw widespread cross platform titles. Next few years is a gross exaggeration. Sony already has demons souls, returnal, and soon ratchet and clank. As they tend to set the industry standard, and as these games continue to sell well, expect other publishers to consider it time. We've already seen with a few games that shared public numbers, that the ps5 is taking massive shares of sales of new games.

I think MS should have just made a digital series X and priced it at $399. But at the end of the day the Series S isn't MS biggest problem. They need solid exclusives games that can even take advantage of the Series X/S.

Zelda Breath of the Wild is amazing and it's running on a Nintendo switch, so it is possible for them to deliver great games with weaker hardware.
Outside of maybe Gears 5 and Forza Horizon it's been years since MS has delivered a amazing looking game so the hardware isn't even the main concern here.

TLOUS 2 and ghost of tsushima look just as good as some of the next gen games we have seen so far. MS does not have a hardware problem, they have a talent problem and hopefully these new acquisitions will help.

A better launch lineup of games that looked like ones that came out 5 years prior. And it's possible the X could have stalled due to that lack of software without the hardware shortages and covid.

I can assure you apple looks at all competituon when they generate thier hardware and thier pricing. Half the market not being thiers is a far cry from how you portrayed it, its like saying Sony doesn't account for ms and Nintendo when they design and price products.

Yeah, 'right now' isn't what's being discussed and if by 'many months' you mean 1-2 months, then you are right. If you mean 'since February' then you'd be full of shit, like the other guy.

Because scalpers couldnt make too much money on it when it's designed as a budget option what do you expect? Around Christmas it was a different story due to demand but scalpers can't sell them for over £300 If you're gonna overpay you are going to get an XSX or a PS5.

It wasn't in stock when I went looking for mine I had to wait 3 weeks.

Bullshit lmao I bought mine on April 4th on ebay for £5 more which was the cheapest one on there because there was no stock in the UK. I checked all those sites

So you're basically disputing a single month? Since March onwards shops have had an abundance of them, still waiting to be sold.

No idea about Feb, based on demand at the moment, wouldn't be at all surprised if someone told me they struggled to move them even back then.

Don't suppose you have any proof for your claim. You just want to argue for the sake of arguing.

It has been widely available in March and April.

Even bundled in with other items, in effort to move it on.

Not sure what happened to you. Maybe just unfortunate timing.

If you could read I've already said HUKD and StockInformer is all the proof needed.

And yes I am disputing 'a single month' or however you want to phrase it (start of Feb to end of Mar is 60 days-ish), the truth is important to me I suppose.

That post got 1600 degrees heat on the 9th March and was just a Series S at RRP. If they were readily available that deep in to March, why would that deal be scorching hot?
