I played like this until Plague Knight, then I thought something wasn't right. I was discouraged, reading on interwebs game it's not that hard while constantly dying a lot at bosses.
Now it feels slow, tho.
Liking the game however I think the pogo shovel mechanics could've been improved with a more fluid momentum. Right now it feels disjointed from the normal platforming. Just my thoughts after 40 min. of playing and I'm sure I'll get used to it and have a good ole time.
ok so I played about an hour last night and so far I LOVE it. Feels like a castlevania game with more variety to the combat and the boss fights, as strange as it sounds, feels sort of like darksouls boss fights where you have to be patient and observing if you want to win.
My main problem though is the USB NES and SNES controllers I have are not being recognized by the game. Windows sees them fine and if I pull up device properties, I can see the dpad and buttons lighting up on the screen as I push them on the controller but in the game, the "gamepad" control setup/config is grayed out.
If I plug in my xbone or 360 controller, it works fine.
What am I missing here? Do I need to manually edit some config file or is this a known problem?
Bought it and beat it with 88% item completion. Enjoyed it a lot and bought the Soundtrack on Bandcamp
I only have a few minor complaints (mild spoilers):
The level with the black-out screens should leave the character and enemy sprites visible. Being unable to see Shovel Knight screwed me over with the controls far more than the lack of terrain.
The
Phase Locket
gets kinda game-breaking towards the end when you have a lot of magic, since you can use it to lock yourself mid-air and overcome some challenges very easily.
Most of the other armors other than the
Dynamo Mail
seem kinda useless? I'm not sure why the others have drawbacks yet this one doesn't.
Gotta say I'm pretty lukewarm on this, it seems to be a lot worse then Volgarr. The level design is all over the place in this. When I die I'm not going 'my bad, next time I'll do x and y', it's just 'well... that just happened I guess.'
it's a very fun throwback, feels really authentic unlike a lot of the indie-darling retro-fetishist games. suffice to say, that means it is leaps and bounds above anything else wayforward has ever put out. aesthetically, the game is pretty much unrivaled. the graphics don't look cheap while remaining authentic to the era. the soundtrack is probably the best i'll hear on any game this year. the mechanics feel great, collision detection, platforming, pogoing off of enemies/hazards with the shovel, great enemy variety and level design... i'd say it is the best "NES" game since Mega Man 9, though I'm not certain it is as good as that game.
one of the major issues i have though is i think the difficulty is a little exaggerated, i destroyed checkpoints even. i'd call the game challenging but not "NES hard". the benefit to this, however, is how the game tends to safely introduce new hazards/obstacles/enemies in a manner that won't one hit kill you at first, which means the game mitigates the issue of cheap/unexpected deaths. on the other hand, the game is perhaps TOO generous in terms of how often,
especially during the boss gauntlet near endgame,
it gives you health items and MP. the new game plus option will probably alleviate some of these issues, but i tried to play it in the most difficult manner (by ignoring checkpoints) and STILL thought it didn't "bring it" in terms of difficulty.
personal issues aside, i'd say it is an easy title to recommend for nostalgic gamers.

I don't think Volgarr and Shovel Knight are comparable from a design or inspiration perspective. Volgarr is meant to wreck your shit like Battletoads or Contra. Shovel Knight is more of an even-tempered combat-platformer like Mega Man 2 or Ducktales.

Yet I get 100x more frustrated at dying in Shovel Knight then I did in Volgarr, despite Shovel Knight being a lot easier. The level design is just really loose.

There's very little wasted space in the levels and it's fun to discover little nooks and crannies. It's not transcendent level design or anything but it's good enough. It's better than many of Wayforward's outings into retro-throwback territory.
I enjoy both games but Volgarr leans more toward the difficulty-wank design perspective than I'd like. Different strokes, I guess.
So I'm kind of stuck could someone help me out... How do you get up to the ladder on the top right? I'm assuming thats where you have to go in this level.

there needs to be a better penalty to death on this game.
I really like the game, but how short it is hurts. Still though, a great retro-esque game. Much better than Megaman 9 & 10. Much better revival than some attempts (Regular show game !_!). Kotaku's review is exactly how I feel...
AMAZING game. double dipped too (Steam and 3DS). I'm so glad that at least one reviewer (Destructoid) got the reference to ZELDA 2 NOT DUCKTALES regarding the downward stab - not a pogo. Main difference is pogo you could bounce anywhere but in this game you can only bounce on enemies.
two question:
No way to run right? I know there is a dash move but just normal run - no?
Manami Matsumae created two songs - does anyone know which ones?

I agree that Shovel Knight is the easier game on your first play through it. Volgarr is designed so that you have to use everything you've got, while Shovel Knight is likely designed so that you can beat it with only your shovel, basic armor, no sub weapon, and no health upgrades. But they're there if you want or need them. I've gotten all the endings in Volgarr, but I don't know if I'd ever be able to beat Shovel Knight with no upgrades and no deaths. I appreciate both approaches, though I guess I lean on Shovel Knight's side.
I was expecting something a bit more arcade-y/difficult. It's pretty easy and there's just too much busywork like getting gold involved. Not enough time overcoming obstacles. That said, I still like it. It's a cute game.
Depends on what you prefer. I love playing on the big screen, get sick from 3D effects, and rarely have an excuse to play on the go. 3DS won't be getting the multiplayer mode, but it has everything else plus a few extras.
I have a Steam code from the kickstarter that I'm lookin to sell for $12 paypal if you're interested. Posted it over on the B/S/T thread. Would personally rather have it on Wii U and was too late to change my kickstarter code.
