Shovel Knight |OT| The 8-bit adventures of Butt Butt Goes to Europe & Australia

So... Who do you want to be playable first?

Ugh, I was so disappointed by the results of the fan vote. :/

I think bypassing enemies in the game is fine. It's an intended purpose for the relic, and honestly you can bypass most enemies in the game pretty easily if you want anyway. As for avoiding boss attacks, I think that's fine too, because as long as you can't deal damage while in a phase, you'll just be trading MP for protection. It doesn't last forever, and at some point the player still has to engage the boss while not invulnerable to beat the boss.

By far the biggest issue with the phase locket is that it can give weaker players the impression that it's a good strategy to phase during a boss fight and just hammer away at the boss cheaply. That's a terribly inefficient way to play and actually makes the game less fun. If you cannot deal damage while in a phase, it will communicate to players that they should try other methods and I think that will result helping people enjoy the game more too.

Yeah, I completely agree with this. Just to weigh in some more on the difficulty/balance...

I haven't been clearing a stage unless I completely destroy all checkpoints as I play. I'm up to the final three knights (just did Propeller Knight's stage with no check-points...0_0) and it's been fairly difficult. Grant it, I'm making the game harder for myself, but that's what's really great about this game. I feel like the game caters towards multiple playing styles and it also provides options for varying skill levels. You don't have to buy/use the relics, but they're there to aid the player. I find it interesting that bosses don't grant powers/relics. Perhaps that was an attempt to balance the game even further, considering the structure of the game (no traditional lives, unique checkpoint system, etc.)? They also clearly want players to "run" the game without using a lot of these items/options. Given the looks of the "Feats" list, you're going to have to beat the game without using really anything, ha! So, there's definitely some sort of incentive to replay the game with various limitations.

But yeah, the Phase is definitely trouble, as it is. Actually, what I think is the WORST idea are the Chalices and the insane shit you can fill them with. Is there a limit to refilling these Chalices!? I haven't seen one yet, but I could be missing something? Is there really no penalty other than locking out a "Feat" for that current run and a tarnish on your personal gaming record, ha? Seriously, couldn't you potentially don the Conjuror's Clock, stock up on two of those liquids that FULLY restore HP/MP, and Phase your way through entire stages/bosses?

ok so I played about an hour last night and so far I LOVE it. Feels like a castlevania game with more variety to the combat and the boss fights, as strange as it sounds, feels sort of like darksouls boss fights where you have to be patient and observing if you want to win.

My main problem though is the USB NES and SNES controllers I have are not being recognized by the game. Windows sees them fine and if I pull up device properties, I can see the dpad and buttons lighting up on the screen as I push them on the controller but in the game, the "gamepad" control setup/config is grayed out.

If I plug in my xbone or 360 controller, it works fine.

What am I missing here? Do I need to manually edit some config file or is this a known problem?

:(

Edit: Is this what I need to do?

War Eagle!!

I'm trying to lurk because I don't want to butt in all the time, but I just wanted to say this means a LOT to me. And the whole team is really grateful to GAF for all the love (not just in this OT, but ever since the Kickstarter.) You guys really seem to get what we're doing, and you're the kind of people I want to just hang out with, get super ripped, and play Neo Turf Masters and Violent Storm until the sun is up.

Not a day goes by where I don't feel CRAZY lucky to work with such incredible artists and storytellers (both at YCG and at WF, and with indies like Dave from Boot Hill Heroes, and Justin from Proton Pulse Rift) because it makes my job SO EASY. There's never any question about what needs to be written.

So happy you guys are happy. There's new music in the works for the stretch-goal features; I'm personally down to write a complete alt soundtrack for each playable boss, but Sean is trying his best to prevent me from literally dying. Still gunning for a ton of new stuff, though.

I've been a big fan of your stuff for a long time and I have to say, the soundtrack for this game is just incredible. Really fantastic work. Every track has really, really impressed me.

I'm very proud to have backed this game. : )

Also, you brought up Neo Turf Masters....wow, I love you even more now.

so no luck on binding the controls for my retro nes adaptor. Anyone get their nes controller (with retro pc adaptor) to work?

Yeah I felt that way about all the world map optional bosses. Pretty sure they were Kickstarter rewards. I think it's kinda cool and adds content to the game. The fights aren't badly designed either. They sure stick out like a sore thumb in terms of cohesiveness though. But I guess that's fine, since they're clearly an "extra" part of the game.

I thought Phantom Striker and Mr. Hat were fairly cohesive with the game. The Liquid Samurai were also designed by a kickstarter backer and are virtually indistinguishable from the normal rogues gallery unless you knew their origin beforehand.
Ugh, I was so disappointed by the results of the fan vote. :/

Out of curiosity, were you a backer?
Regardless, those three were my top picks. So I am very happy with how it turned out.
That would put a serious dampener on the ornate armor's appeal!
Nah, the best part of the ornate armor is the awesome animations that make you feel like you are playing Shovel Knight Rising: Revengeance.
TBH I wouldn't be surprised if some of the game's cheat codes are just a palette swap campaign, but going off of what we know for cheat codes that do exist we can't say for sure.

The only ones we know are real are
1. The Iron Man of Gaming Mode, which is essentially a timed run of a portion of mole knight's stage (custom designed for a special competition)
2. Butt mode, which we have no idea what it actually does: code remains undistributed

I remember voting for King King and Propeller Knight, I don't remember who the third one I voted for. I remember voting no to the Enchantress because I don't like the idea of "hey play as the villian(ess) and slaughter your own minions!" at least with the knights I can head-canon they betrayed their leader and switched sides.

It was a ranking poll though, it wasn't yes or no.
Unless my memory has gone to complete shit and I'm pulling stuff out of my ass, anyway.

Just finished, pretty damn good game. The balance is terrible, though. By a third way through the game you have so much health that you can just face tank the bosses.

Dammit pasting this into the steam file didn't work... or rather, shovel knight refuses to accept the fact that I have that USB SNES controller plugged up despite windows having zero problems seeing all the buttons and stuff being pressed in the game controller properties window

:(

Guess I'll register on the YCG forum and see if I can get some answers.

The game simply does nothing with the controller and the "edit controller" option is grayed out.

Is anyone from YCG here in this thread?

They are very good at keeping up with email requests. They have an email for this sort of thing at support@yachtclubgames.com

ugh... is there any site that sells digital codes for e-shop pre paid cards?

I wanted to buy it for WiiU but damn nintendo won't take my credit card because "bla bla it's not from the USA screw you for not living in a country that has e-shop support, we don't want your filthy south american money even though you can perfectly pay in USD like you do on steam, amazon, ebay, etc.".

Other then propeller knight none of the other OoNK look like they'd be fun to play.

I disagree, I think Treasure Knight would be cool to play as, he just doesn't look visually interesting in the slightest.
But they will all be playable in some form in battle mode, once we get it anyway.

I remember during that design hangout for campaign ideas when we came to polar knight, yacht club was essentially going "ok, he has a ground pound, now GIVE US SOMETHING ELSE". Many cool ideas were thrown around for enchantress though. Glass cannon character with teleportation, etc. I didn't think it would be fun to play as personally, though.

Fair enough.

There's a user in GAF buy sell community that sells eShop cards for people just like you. He doesn't do it for profit at all. Good guy.

I'm having the same issue with my nes controller...

Yes.

One of my votes was for the Enchantress. I was pretty disappointed that she didn't get one of the spots.

Oh she was an option (I missed the vote) that would have been a better pick then King Knight who's popularity only seems to come from the fact he was shown first. At least Specter and Plague look like they'll play radically different.

Liking the game so far but man it's kicking my ass. Lol from reading this thread I thought it would be easy but I'm dying all the time. Guess I just suck huh?

You have to be some sort of shovel knight GOD to get an iron man score above 5000. I'm still in the 4000s, and allegedly someone has a score over 9000 (I might have misheard that though. I know Sean does have a score of over 7000).
For the curious (quote to see):

Input it into the name field for the profile, the game will notify you if you did it correctly.

The game is fucking perfect on the 3DS. I fucking HATE 3D effect and with this game, it looks amazing while using it, first time ever I'm not annoyed by the effect.

I'll double dip on PC too.

I actually like King Knight the best out of those three. I feel Plague Knight and Spectre Knight are too similar, thematically. King Knight will probably at least have a funny/unique scenario.

I voted for the Enchantress, Treasure Knight & Tinker Knight. (Though if the Troupple King was an option, I'd vote for him 80 million times.)

Anyone else feel like
the first half of the tower of fate + the black knight fight
was a better made level than
the inner tower + the enchantress fight
? I felt that the
tower ascent was considerably more epic in both music and visuals, and that black knight was a much better boss fight than the enchantress
.

I mean, you had fucking meteors coming out of the sky for black knight with him going all rogue angel, while the enchantress just kinda gets big and spits fire at you
.

Well, it's not like we knew the Troupple King existed at the time.

Although I do with he had some sort of boss battle. He could be ridiculously difficult, the balance level set to "we don't actually expect anyone to beat it without cracking the game" hard.
Looks cool! What kind of game is this like? Mega Man? Castlevania the old school ones? Metroid?

I find it hilarious on many levels that your avatar contains both MN9 and Shantae yet you were completely unaware of the game, penning you as a megaman and wayforward fan (YCG is made up of ex-wayforward people, and Manami Matsumae contributed two tracks as well along with the MN9 team giving quite a few shovel knight shoutouts).
As for your question, it's closer to Mega Man in overall level design.

the enchantress battle reminded me of the drac fight at the end of castlevania 3. I thought the lead up and final level all reminded me of the end of a Castlevania game, which is usually just moodier, easy until you get to drac himself.

Yacht Club Games should of anticipated the life changing affect of the Troupple King, and built the entire game around him. They could of switched out Shovel Knight after the prologue, MGS2/Raiden style.

Just finished the main game probably won't hit NG+ until I find all the music sheets and do the other things I missed. I have to say it's probably in my top 5 games of this year for me so far. The game had a fairly balanced difficulty curve and didn't make things too hard for me in the long term. Of course the music is probably the best I've heard from Virt from a while. I would definitely recommend this game to people who likes classic retro action platformers.

MegaMan and Ducktales mostly.

Have you played the Mighty Switch Force games on the 3DS? The 3D effect is pretty great for those too. I think in general I enjoy it more when it's used in 2D games with fixed cameras because it's less distracting.

I think I was hoping for Plague, Tinker, and Treasure. They seem to be the most different from Shovel Knight.

I was one of the ones who put Enchantress on the bottom. Being able to easily fly through and killing everything sounded too boring.

It's on my list too. After I finish this, I'll try it.

I must be crap at video games, I'm finding this game challenging! Water level is kicking my butt!
Then again I'm just using the shovel plus destroying all check points

How many levels in this? Just beat the third level. Been destroying checkpoints as I go. Third boss took me several tries, second boss I did first time. I've not used relics either, well unless the fishing pole counts, I've used that a few times. Looks like you can upgrade health too?

I think I'm going to go for a challenge and avoid most of these things. Getting through a level once you know it is pretty darn fast. No checkpoints, relics (we'll see how long this lasts), or upgrades and I think this can be a nice challenge

Megaman style 8 levels plus a multi-part finale

Health is upgradable in the village

I'm about to buy this game but I want to make sure first, are there any downsides to the 3DS version compared to the Wii U version?

3DS version won't be getting local multiplayer in the later patch

What is this code, exactly? Haven't seen it explained anywhere.

I'm probably picking it up tonight on the 3DS as well. I love stereoscopic 2D games on that thing. I'm only worried about the resolution, and whether it's clean or stretched across the 3DS screen.
