Shuei Yoshida answers about BC (PS3 not happening), Rime, JRPGs and more

We found the solution!, someone send this thread to Sony Engineers xD
Haha well I'm assuming there's not more to it than that, of course (read the conversation above :P).

They could also know the solution, or not need it or decide not to do it for other reasons. Personally I don't care, if someone is stuck with x420ButtSmasherFaintColt69x that's their problem, not mine. :D

I can understand why WWS might not be working on a larger big budget JRPG right now because of its potentially high cost to create. They might be taking a wait and see approach with it, looking at whatever sales numbers FFXV, KHIII, and P5 do before moving forward on a project.

No new legend of dragoon?

Let that stinker stay in the past!

Glad to see someone else on this forum who doesn't have some weird nostalgia boner for such a terrible game.

Jesus, who the hell make PSN ID as primary key

Clearly because it's unique
lol

What made Legend of Dragoon a 'terrible game'?

This is usually the part where i get no answer, but i'd genuinely like to know.

I could even atleast understand if someone said average or something like that, but saying the game is terrible makes me feel like we played entirely different games

They don't need to make the PS4 emulate the PS3, they just need to let you play them on psnow for free if you own them digitally or put in the disk.

maybe not in direct response to you but there are plenty of gaf threads/posts about why people think it sucks lol

I haven't seen them, so i'd like to know

The story and characters were great, the gameplay was standard turn based fair with crazy flashy combos, and timed attacks. Tons of variety of location and a pretty decent playtime.

What exactly is terrible about it?

Looking at the Xbox 360 BC on XBO: I'm so jelly.

Most PS3 PS+ exclusives I don't play because I don't want to go through the hassle of downloading and installing them. :(

^ Second party is third party exclusivity i guess...

PS3 is pretty much impossible for PS4's HW.

According to Various articles on the internet, the PS4 would be able to emulate PS3 games, but that would cost Sony alot of R & D to make a working emulator also would make PS Now useless. So in theory, yes can Sony can make PS3 games work in the PS4 woth emulation. Will that happen anytime soon?? Unless more people bitch at Yoshida-san then no for now.

Who wrote these 'various articles'?

Yeah, whilst people are entitled to their opinions I never quite understood the love for that game. I never really forgave my local shop owner for convincing me to buy that instead of Final Fantasy IX.

All bad news to my ears. No PS3 BC, nothing on PS1/PS2, no Japanese RPGs.

Nice to have confirmation that RIME still exists I guess, hopefully that turns out well.

I`m fine with that. I had almost ten years to play last generation games, I still have my old consoles, and if I hadn`t, they are very cheap to get.

So PS1 & PS2 BC compatibility is to come (please, announce that in the PSX), but as everyone expected, no PS3 BC ever.

I'm ok with that!

Didn't he say that we just won't see any JRPGs
from Sony in the near future?
That sounds exactly what V said here because he said it was in early development.
And BTW there is no way he would just spill the beans about an upcoming game in some random interview.

This.

That is not true and if you can't provide links to said "various articles" to back up your claim then this is nothing more than speculation from your side.

And for the umpteenth time: PSNow is NOT Sony's answer to BC on PS4. This service has absolutely nothing to do with PS4 in general. It's an online streaming platform for gaming that you could use with ANY device that support it. I really don't understand why people can't see or accept that lol

IF ONLY.... my PS3 was here with me (got stolen a couple months ago), I would not be worry about this BC. I have a bunch of PS3 discs and digital games that I haven't beated.

Now at the end of the gen, I am bit hesitant to buy another new (ps3) console. Maybe I will get it someday when it's cheap. As for PSone & PS2 games on the PS4, I'll take it in a heart beat.

*Yoshida-san’s favorite Street Fighter V character is Dhalsim, that he always used at the time of Street Fighter II.

He should have just said "It's Sim" and left it at that.

Also putting that BC wasn't happening in the topic was a good move, better to not get anyone's hopes up.

On the name change for anyone with a horrible psn name and wants to change it, just create a fake facebook account with the name you want and pair it, then let anyone see it, now you have custom nickname and avatar.

Combat was mostly a one-trick pony, focusing on timing a single button press to do any normal damage to an opponent. The story, the characters, pretty much the entirety of the game is forgettable and uninspired. The only bit of the game I do remember were some of the art in the game was pretty cool. Then, there's the singular path, and I do mean path, through the game. I know that most JRPGs are fairly linear in nature, but this is FFXIII linear years before XIII was even announced.

It's not a good game. I've tried to go back to it a few times and didn't even feel a hint of nostalgia. Each time I've put the game down almost immediately. I am of the opinion that it is a terrible game and that many see it through rose-tinted glasses for a few minor things it tried to do.

Yeah, whilst people are entitled to their opinions I never quite understood the love for that game. I never really forgave my local shop owner for convincing me to buy that instead of Final Fantasy IX.

Ouch dude.

If so, isn't the solution obvious? Just keep the psn id as the primary key, but display a nickname and keep the primary key hidden. People wont care that their primary key is their ex id.

Sounds easy enough, but also potentially causes consistency/compatibility issues with older platforms and software they just don't want to update. Given how strangely some things are implemented in the Sony ecosystem who knows what they've tried internally and found to break their system. I just hope they manage to work it all out in a manner that pleases everyone soon.

There's no way Shu would tell them that they're working on a JRPG. If an epic JRPG is coming, then it will be introduced at this year's PSX, so stay patient.

Bullshit

I don't need PS3 BC but I am still hoping for PS1 and 2. I still have several games on each that I go back to pretty regularly. Such heart break when my PS3 that had BC went belly up.

Google is your friend "Can PS4 play PS3 games"
Funny thing is that's a question directly answered by Google.
Although backward compatibility is not an option with the PS4, there are still ways to play PS3 games on the newer console. Most methods cost additional money. They also do not allow gamers to use their disc or downloaded files.
First link:
Can I play my old PS3 games on PS4? Well, the short answer is no. You can't put a PS3 or PS2 game in your PS4 and play it. The systems are fundamentally not compatible with each other.
Third link is a Forbes contributor taking about PS Now.
Fourth link is the weird Jim Ryan interview from June where he acts like no one cares about BC.

Are you talking the interview with Shuhei Yoshida from the PS4 reveal?
But for now, downloaded PS3 games won’t work “unless, somehow, some games work on emulation. And the easiest thing, technically, would be to make PSone games work on PS4 with emulation. But we’re not talking about our emulation plans as yet.”
You know all that would work are games that don't touch the Cell spus, like 2D PSN games and third party games from the first year.

As of today, they don’t even know if it can be done

This is not giving me any confidence in their abilities.

Why would changing PSN name be hard? It's surely nothing more than an identifier linked to an internally generated unique PSN ID number used as main key for you? How the hell could they have coded the PSN Name to make it hard?

Rumor is that the psn id is the primary key.

Yeah, seriously.

If so, isn't the solution obvious? Just keep the psn id as the primary key, but display a nickname and keep the primary key hidden. People wont care that their primary key is their ex id.

As longs as newer users have unique ids not related to the nicks, and the freed up nicks are up for grabs, your solution seems fine. However, you can do away with nicks all together, for primary keys, be giving unique id's to existing users in a new column. However, keeping the column name would allow them to keep all their queries Ah, your solution seems to be the easiest. This way you wouldn't even have to update the foreign key columns in related tables.

They wouldn't even have to update the login clients, just the login backend, and this could theoretically be done while PSN is still running (although I wouldn't risk it)

That said, they don't even allow logging in using nickname, I'd be surprised if nickname is among primary keys. (I'd assume both email and nickname would be in the primary keys, however, that'd put the database integrity at the functional level in the hands of PSN interface, not the server (as multiple primary keys means different combinations of those would allow different user entries - same email, different nick, same nick, different emails.)
Edit: They allow changing of e-mail addresses, so email may not be in the primary keys..

Really disappointed by Sony if they are not working on a JRPG.

If they aren't, they aren't. I can't get excited about it unless I see some art or disappointed unless they released some assets from a canceled game. Still, I can't help wondering: if they, later, announced a J-RPG...would you be salty at Shuhei? "I can't believe he lied to us..." lol.
