Shuhei Yoshida mentions Sony likes Nintendo doing well because they hope Nintendo fans might "graduate to more mature systems" like PlayStation

Sony apparently likes Nintendo doing well, because they create a new audience of people for them to target eventually, based on what Shuhei Yoshida said
"Nintendo is bringing a younger audience into gaming, and some of them when they grow up, might graduate into more mature systems like PlayStation or Xbox. Of course, they have huge respect for what Nintendo does in terms of how Nintendo should be doing in the industry. We all felt like it's great to have Nintendo to continue to be successful so that we can continue to grow the industry."

This is after they crushed Nintendo Gamecube, took their exclusives from Capcom and wore them around like a serial killer wearing a skin trophy.

He's not wrong. Generally that has borne itself out since the early 2000s.

TBH, I think Nintendo is happier with the status quo than Sony. But each of them are eyeing the other's lunch.

Maybe that is their hope, but their install base peaked way back in the PS2, so I'm not sure many Nintendo fans are "graduating" to PlayStation.

That's been generally true for me. I started with the GB and SNES. Then graduated to PS1 and PC. Those have been my primary platforms since, though I still buy Nintendo consoles as a secondary and also now my kids have started to play the Switch.

I never understood this notion.

When I was a teenager, I wanted to be perceived as older and mature, because that's cool, so I smoked cigarettes, listened to Slipknot and played violent video games (Gears of War, Max Payne, etc.) because that's what my older brother was playing and what the 20-year-olds talked about.

kinda bad situation with digital libraries strengthening loyalty once you are in one system these days. sony better try to get kids sooner into their system with proper family friendly games rather than speculating that someone that starts on Switch will eventually want to move to their platform.
More Astrobot, Sackboy! Another Kart Racer, PS Allstars Fighter 2. Make a damn Horizon or something new that isn't a Ubisoft Collectathon with proper dungeons. Returnal could have been a good Metroid like game and not this repetitive trash some masochists love.

One thing that no other console manufacter learned to do as well as Nintendo is how to weaponize nostalgia. Look, all the mf I know that play Nintendo are all well above their 30s. Nintendo has people by the balls by simply appealing to their inner child, that is why things like Pokémon, Mario, and Animal Crossing sells like there is no tomorrow.

I always see this sentiment as a misinterpretation of something that has a root in truth.

Switch isn't for "little kids"--see the chart above. But there is a content/style difference between the Switch and the Xbox/PS5 (as with prior Nintendo hardware). People who want to play Nintendo-style "games-first" games come in all ages, and those types of games are certainly more approachable and inviting than, I dunno...Death Stranding. Some of the people--irrelevant of age--who start there will keep a preference for that style of game forever, and others will develop a curiosity about games with more involved narratives, more grounded presentations, or whatever.

As a sort of bizarro world example, my son is 6, and he got started (at 4) on shit like Journey and the Fumito Ueda games. He's actually super resistant to go to more standard nintendo-style, kid-friendly games:, and his point of contention--as best he can articulate it--is that those games are "too silly". The Last Guardian isn't some hardcore gamer gorefest, but there's a narrative/presentation richness there that he's gotten hooked on--for now--that just isn't present in the front and center Nintendo games you usually see, and even he has already clocked that.

It's actually kind of a pain in the ass for me, because my god is it hard to find kid-safe games that aren't totally fucking boring or shitty and are NOT nintendo games, but are minimum baseline as pretentious as Journey, lol.

It's more mature to stick to what you like without peer pressure telling you to.

Or in this case some random exec at Sony.

Bingo. I have a PS5, barely touch it. Sony is not putting out the games they were the previous generations. Third parties for the most part I am buying on PC. Now Sony has PC games, I can wait for something I may want to come to PC.

I'm the opposite. I started on Nintendo, went to PC and now I'm on PS. Not into Nintendo games anymore and I've tried PC a bunch and I can't stand all the shit that goes on over there. I prefer the simplicity of a console and I think Sony is banking on a bunch of kids wanting the same as they get older.

I figured this probably happens naturally but Nintendo understands the need to replenish the industry with new consumers.

They sell because they're good games.

Ehh everyone is getting all indignant about this but it's kinda true.

I'd wager that most of us began our gaming lives on Nintendo systems, then expanded to other platforms as well. And practically every kid I know of started with Switch as their first dedicated gaming console.

That doesn't mean you have to get "too mature" for Nintendo when you're older.

As a solid #2 on the software charts is the kid-friendly game Cyberpunk 2077. There's nothing like a good solid #2.

Thinking about it I honestly don't know any adults who play Nintendo games other than women. The guys are all PC/PS/Xbox.

Was surprised to hear this out of Shu's mouth. This is like a 3 decade old narrative that has been debunked. Let me guess, he thinks kids are the primary playerbase for Pokemon? Do you see10 year olds flocking to the Switch 2 launch? No, they are at home playing Roblox.
