Silent Hill f actress “felt her own sanity almost slipping” in protagonist’s role

During Sony's recent State of Play, Konami announced that Silent Hill f will be releasing worldwide on September 25, 2025 for PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. The latest batch of new info on the game includes a spooky trailer showing off monster designs and combat, but we're also starting to learn more about Silent Hill f's cast, who seem to have had a rough time dealing with the psychological horror.

Set in 1960s Japan, Silent Hill f puts you in the role of schoolgirl Hinako Shimizu. Hinako is modelled after and voiced by Japanese actress Konatsu Kato, who recently shared a message about her involvement in the game. Alongside the usual expressions of gratitude for the role, Kato commented, "I've been living as Hinako in the world of Silent Hill for a long time now. On some days, I almost felt my own sanity slipping, but it was worth it to be able to contribute to this game."

From what we've seen so far, Silent Hill f handles some heavy themes, so much so that it became the first Silent Hill game to earn an 18+ age rating in Japan. The title's Steam page warns about portrayals of child abuse, bullying and torture, while it's ESRB summary describes gruesome depictions of body parts being sawed off, people being burned alive and branded by hot irons. Konami advises players to take breaks or speak to loved ones if they get overwhelmed while playing, so perhaps it's no wonder that the cast members found working on the game emotionally taxing.

Silent Hill f's developers have promised to stay true to the franchise's roots in psychological horror despite the changes in setting, and producer Motoi Okamoto explained that Hinako's choices can lead her either to embracing elegance and beauty, or to madness and horror. This spiral into insanity may be what Kato is referring to in her message.

It's also worth mentioning that Silent Hill f's story was penned by Ryukishi07, a writer famously gifted at giving players nightmares with his Higurashi and Umineko franchises.

Is something getting lost in translation or does this confirm multiple endings?

Hinako's choices can lead her either to embracing elegance and beauty, or to madness and horror.

I could tell. The way the lines were delivered in that trailer were damn fierce to the point I'm playing it in Japanese

Ryukishi cooked, its interesting to see him use some higurasho tropes, but i cant wait see what fucked up shit he wrote in, that australia even denied rating

Look the game looks good but that's about as likely as Alana Pearce I work 387 days a year claim
Maybe she's a method actress and set her whole home life / mood up around it.

Closed herself off to the friends and world. Darkened her dwelling, etc., etc..

That can fuck with your psyche.

Just watched the trailer and it looks insanely good. The monster design was sick! Silent Hill 2 was almost too good to be true and if Konami nails it with an original take on Silent Hill with the same level of quality as SH2 (or the originals by Team Silent) then it would be like entering heaven and meet God.

Please let me invert the camera this time.

(EDIT: I guess with most of the systems today, you can do that in the overall options -- but I *really* wanted to play and like Homecoming, but just couldn't.)

Cringe honestly. Feels like marketing...
🤷‍♂️ Eh, it's fun marketing. Most of us here probably used to feel hype from things like this when we were younger.

It reminds me of Sean Schemmel passing out when screaming as Goku or when JYB almost broke his knee/shin when doing mocap for Nero in DMC 4.

Haven't played a Silent Hill game in years, but this one caught my attention right away. Hoping it delivers.

It takes almost literally nothing to be denied rating by freaking Australia, land of the totalitarian ninnies.
Apologies to anyone who lives there. No, really. I am sorry for you.

That being said, is this really Silent Hill? I mean, are we really judging the game by how much mutilation and torture there is? Like, that's why we're hyped?

Silent Hill is psychological horror. It's about people who've made mistakes and suffer for it, but you want to hold out hope for them. It's not Saw. And it's not whatever shit this is.
I don't have a problem with the trailer, per se - it's just not my cup of tea - but the only reason this bears the Silent Hill name is because of marketing. This could be Fatal Frame with wiffle-bat combat, or the next Siren. This has nothing to do with Silent Hill at all.

I hate Konami.

What are you babbling about? Fo you know Ryukishi's works? Gore is last thing hes known about, its about his time travel, psychological small town mistery stories. Perfect fit for this new silent hill.

I liked When They Cry (or Higurashi, if you'd prefer). That doesn't mean I have to like this. I'm "babbling" in direct response to the people here claiming that depictions of gore and torture are something to be psyched for in a Silent Hill game. I think that would be obvious.

Also, there are plenty of people who have the misconception that Higurashi is all about blood and guts, too. Ironic.

One way or another, that has nothing to do with my misgivings or opinions on this non-Silent Hill Silent Hill.

For me Silent Hill 2 felt very different than original Silent Hill and Silent Hill the Room very different than rest of the series.

So I personally glad Silent Hill f feel different. One of my issues with later Silent Hill games was they all trying too hard to be wanna be SH2.

This game will ease my pain till end of February. I feel close to back when I owned RE Code Veronica X & SH2 for the PS2. Great times.

I see what you're trying to say, and I respect your opinion. SH3 didn't seem to be anything like SH2, though, and The Room was just plain awful by every metric to the point where many people don't even really consider it a proper SH game. But notice how much The Room was about glamorizing "western" horror - that is to say, graphic violence inflicted by a serial killer, with little to no actual nuance. For this and many reasons, it didn't feel like a SH game at all. Some believe it was never even meant to be one, and got rebranded through its development.

That's what I'm feeling here. They lost their creatives and storywriters. It's like they did a Google search on "psychological horror," Higurashi popped up, and they thought, "let's do that." This is divorced completely from what came before, and I don't think "doing a Higurashi" is a good idea. It feels like an obvious stretch just to put the Silent Hill name on something, because there's no way this has any sort of believable tie to the original games.

Or maybe it will, and no matter how cringy I thought the trailer was, the game'll actually be great. I suppose we'll just have to see.

Hopefully this one has more of a sh2 plot and not another generic satanic cult stuff.

From the trailers seems more like the former.

Yeah I think her little sister is pissed that she's going off to college leaving her alone to deal with their family drama, and main character feels guilty for 'abandoning' her

I think it has both, there is dark secret in her town similar how it was in Higurashi When They Cry show or Junji Ito's Uzumaki.

I don't think SH2 is doing my sanity any good. Still, I'm plugging away. Just placed the second clock hand on the clock in brown stain - I mean blue side apartment's.
