Silksong is So Popular, Even People in the Piracy Subreddit are Encouraging Others to Just Buy It: 'If We Can Afford to Support Them, We Should'

Silksong was available through less-than-legal channels almost immediately after launch, but as noticed by GamesRadar, the 2.4 million strong Piracy subreddit seemed torn on the topic: Unexpectedly, quite a few of its members have been urging people not to pirate Silksong.

"I was planning on doing it, since every recent game costs around $80 and that's a lot of money for a game," one redditor wrote in a pre-release thread asking how potential pirates planned to proceed. "But after the price was revealed, $20, I thought, damn that's good, and I'm not pirating it."

Others felt the same way, "I think I'm just gonna buy this one. It's only $20 and I really enjoyed Hollow Knight so, I'm sure I won't be mad about spending the money on this one," one respondent wrote.

"Apparently it'll only be like 20 bucks with a three person team. I can and will definitely buy it after it's been out a week or two," another added.

"It's a 3-4 person team that has done right by their fans at every turn," No-Shape6053 wrote. "Making sure the PC release is DRM free. Making sure all original backers of Hollow Knight get Silksong free on their choice of platform. This is a time where if we can afford to support them, we should."

Redditor Efrayl added: "I'm buying this game on GOG straight away, even though I will probably play it later (after a few updates and when it will be on discount)."

RandoT said he's never purchased a full-priced game on launch day in the 10+ years he's had his Steam account, but he's doing it for Silksong: "It was Team Cherry that made me break my 'vow' to always buy on discount."

As it should be 🫡

Even pirates and no gooders know a good thing when it happens.

Say what you want, even this old prat knew in the past that when a thing was good, you paid for it

It's a basic fact of life. Anything else, you really are a scumbag.

It's scummy to pirate, especially new release games.

I don't give a shit if you're downloading retro roms or something, but don't pirate games that are actively for sale.

I have 500+ games on steam worth thousands of dollar, but arguing about whether you can pirate something or not on a freaking r/Piracy subreddit is fucking cringe. If you don't like piracy on certain things then just get out of the subreddit, no need to waste everybody's time.

you keep this kind of behaviour unchecked and its gonna be the downfall of the subreddit just a bunch of people whiteknighting not to pirate certain game

its like pushing people to eat vegetable on a meat subreddit

First off, they say this about a lot of indie games on there, making news about reddit comments is clickbait.

Second, this IS the sort of game you should pirate (if you are a pirate), because it's a guaranted million seller and they don't need your support.

The talk around hollow knight and silksong is so corny tbh. If you don't get on your hands and knees praising this game then you're labeled a hater by the simps, and there's just no objectivity allowed when it comes to these games. It's almost as toxic as the souls community tbh lol. Hollow knight was a good game but nothing special in my book and i'm sure silksong is the same.

LOL the woe is me 3-4 person team has well in excess of $100 million dollars EACH (probably FAR higher as investments compound exponentially at those net worths), and will all be well into MULTIPLE HUNDREDS of millions EACH with Silksong. They don't need or care about pirate's money, and their "do right every step along the way" is because they've all had true "Fuck You" money since like the 1st month of Hollow Knight's release. Every one of these guy's great great great grandkid's 3rd cousin's nephew already have trust funds with more money than the lifetime networth of any one of these gold hearted pirates. This is even dumber than the REEEtard Schreier brigade running crunch defense force and unionization activism for SoCal developers earning $200K and $300K compensation packages for fake working from home.

It's almost as if you build products without trying to fleece customers, you get people to buy your product. Who knew? Wasn't there a company who made the same argument and built a platform around it? Hmmm.. what was it again.. Ste… yeah I forgot.

This isnt something new? Crackgroups always encourage to buy the game if you actually enjoy it. I've seen enough people saying the same about other games on the high seas.

Taking your moral cues from pirates? That's a new one. I don't have a strong feeling one way or another about pirating software, but I will say, those that do it and then try to justify it as something other than getting stuff for free make me sick. "I'm doing this because of xyz moral reasons" yea, go fuck yourselves.

Also, a non-zero chance that theses are paid shills to go into those subreddits and do their thing, though with Silksong's popularity, it's probably less likely in this case.

I don't care much about the game or Metroidvanias in general. But it's everywhere right now. At this point it looks like a substitute religion from the outside.

Oooh. I love being preached to by petty criminals.

I wish pirates would just be honest about why they're thieving : because they would rather spend their money elsewhere and want something for free, instead of trying to shroud their said thievery in a cloak of faux morality about ease of use and accessibility like they always do to make themselves feel virtuous.

Will someone please think of the game journalists who were denied the opportunity to get review copies!

The horror!

Imagine asking game reviewers to pay $20 for this amazing shadow dropped game. The nerve of team cherry!!!

Or you know people get pissed when Nintendo has nickeled and dimed their fans into existence with the switch 2 finally breaking that trend.

They make purchasing their games a chore and the nso lineups are so fucking weak it makes Sony look like Mother Theresa on their psn offerings.

I'll always bang the drum for people to pirate older gen Nintendo products. I ain't buying smb3 a 4th time. Especially since they don't support their old handheld anymore and stopped taking repairs for 3ds

The only difference than pirating a game and stealing from a store is people can get away with it easier.

They still rationalize their theft as someone else's fault, just like any other thief does when caught.
