USA Today: Airline catalog SkyMall files for bankruptcy

USA Today said:
SkyMall, the in-flight shopping catalog that's long been a staple of airline travel, appears to have become a victim of changing times.

The company that produces SkyMall filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on Thursday and is seeking a court-supervised sale of its assets, The Wall Street Journal reports.

Shocking. Nobody wants to pay $100-200 markup on cheap jewelry and electronic gadgets. Can't say I'm going to miss it.

Who would have thought overcharging people for cheap knickknacks while they're basically forced to read your catalog on flights would lead to bankruptcy?

Nooo! Now where will I get my automatic cat feeders, frozen seafood, and diabetic foot slippers all in the same location?

But seriously, SkyMall was the Amazon of its day.

They're basically an in-flight Sharper Image. Surprised they lasted this much longer than SI did.

It was always interesting to read. I never once even considered buying anything from it. Nevertheless, I'll miss it. It's definitely nostalgia saying that. I remember the first time I flew. It was there.

For the sake of maintaining the integrity of air travel, I would like to petition someone to keep cycling/reprinting older issues of SkyMall for my inflight reading entertainment.

I have a flight this sunday, I hope there's still a copy waiting for me at my seat. Always fun to sift through and look at what they come up with.

"Hey, this item looks nice.."
[pulls out phone, goes to amazon app, finds better price & free shipping, click, done]
"Cool, it will be at my house before I get back from this trip"

I can't image why they are no longer making money.

This is the end
Hold your breath and count to ten
Feel the earth move and then
Hear my heart burst again

For this is the end
I've drowned and dreamt this moment
So overdue I owe them
Swept away, I'm stolen

Two months after you're finally able to keep your electronics on during takeoff, Skymall files for bankruptcy.

It makes you wonder-

Was Skymall responsible for pushing the "electronics will crash the airplane" bullshit that existed for 30 years?

I guess they couldn't afford to lobby the FAA anymore.

Always liked browsing through the catalog. Was never going to buy any of it though. I wonder how many people bought that big wall-sized... crossword puzzle, I think it was?

Some of the best times I have spent on airplanes was drawing Tim and Eric style messages on the ads in the Skymall catalouge. R.I.P friend.

Summary of the reading process of a SkyMall magazine:

On airplane:
Well, there's not much else to do, so I guess I'll read this.
Hey, that looks kind of interesting
That could be handy
Ooh, I never even thought of that
That would be nice to have around

Off airplane:
Why would I ever want any of that stuff?

I've always thought their business would be much better if they worked out a deal with the airlines to let people make orders from the plane over those in-seat phones.

Skymall secretly pulling the strings, stopping the world's advance for their own monetary gain man!
