Skyward Sword review thread [Newest Reviews - Cubed3 10/10, GC: A, AusGamers: 7/10]

Shame that the upgrade system is dull, but I kind of had a feeling that would happen anyway. Wasn't expecting much.

But yeah, I need this review. I just wonder how spoilerific it is. I've begun to clamp down on spoilers lately. I haven't watched the lyre trailer, and I've avoided most new footage coming out of Nintendo in the past three weeks.

Need more reviews. Too much hype from two scores may cause trouble if more reviews come out that aren't along the same lines.

I don't want to see the meltdowns when everyone is going crazy about Edge's 10/10 and then suddenly Eurogamer comes out with a 7/10, for example.

My advice: keep your hype in check at all times.

Honestly, I don't give a fuck about reviews but hell, I preordered Skyward Sword special edition just minutes ago. I don't even own a Wii.

It looks like my preorder was cancelled, where did you get it from?

OK, so I got up this morning. Day off work. I knew about the EDGE 10 for Skyward, and desperately wanted to read what they had to say about it. I am a subscriber, so I hoped to God it'd be there.

And it was.

"This is a game made for Christmas Day, released an agonising six weeks before."

Probably my favourite quote from the review. I won't read the Post Script (the bit at the end of the review), as I am afraid there'll be spoilers. Can anybody confirm this?

Game sounds great, though. I do feel they don't go into enough detail on the combat mechanics or structure of the world, though. But taking everything they do say into account, it all sounds like the game is a breath of fresh air for the series. Which is fantastic news.

ONM says the game is easier than Twilight Princess.

Ouch.

Well, shit.

I'm on a media blackout for this game, avoiding trailers, previews pretty ignorant of what's in store. The EDGE score convinced me of a day-one purchase, but I'm not sure if I can stomach another piss easy Zelda. Hope ONM is wrong or exaggerating the situation.

Alternately, maybe the core game is easy but the optional quests are where the real challenge is. I hope there is a challenge.

ONM reviewer answers Skyward Sword questions:

- no limit to amount of one item you can carry
- no Tingle
- there are three unconnected chunks of Hyrule that you access from the Sky Realm by flying through one of the three portals in the clouds - Eldin Volcano, Faron Woods and the desert area
- you can hit down on the D-pad to re-centre the cursor
- you can finish the game without upgrading a single item or potion.
- all of the NPCs are named characters
- most of them have their own house on the island
- many NPC sidequests reward you with gratitude points, which are then used on another, larger side-quest
- reviewer says it's easier than Ocarina Of Time and Twilight Princess
- hints at other returning characters
- main theme is used in some creative, goosebump-inducing ways too
- Wind Waker's Great Sea is larger than the Sky overworld
- Skyward Sword's has Hyrule
- visit the Silent Realm a number of times
- the dark-skinned blonde woman is a very important character, and one you might remember from another Zelda game

I hope he isn't right about the game being easier than Ocarina and Twilight Princess. Nintendo, say it ain't so!

Here's what they say:

I don't remember reading any assessment of the game's challenge level. Any comments on that?

The game's not remarkably difficult nor especially easy - though I would say it's easier than Ocarina Of Time and Twilight Princess. Most of the challenge comes in figuring out the dungeon's puzzles.

EDIT: And they say you can finish the game without upgrading a single item.

... Okay.

The Hut, Zavvi etc. also have it in stock
Except if you order it from them then there's a good chance that they'll charge you for the order without ever shipping it to you, and then refuse to refund your order when you complain.

I don't think there's ever been a difficult Zelda aside from Zelda II. Battles in the 2D games are a lot easier than the 3D games for the most part so I don't get the waning difficulty argument. Never found a distinction in difficulty aside from the puzzles in the series; you can definitely weigh those by difficulty.

But... aren't you required to pick up big hearts after each boss?

Nope. Beating a boss creates a Heart Container and a portal to the hell out of there. You can blast out without picking up the Heart Container.

Whoa I didn't know you could get in trouble with Zavvi and The Hut. I assumed both are reputable UK shops.

Is there a chance amazon.co.uk won't ship my Zelda Special Edition?

"It's not especially easy, but easier than TP."

Why do I get the feeling that he doesn't remember TP's difficulty too well?

Yeah I get that feeling too. TP was especially easy so if SS isn't especially easy it has to be a little more difficult.

TP actually had a pretty good dificulty at the start, around the third dungeon it became piss easy

I was hoping this game would have a nice difficulty combat wise

We've heard both possibilities. Some preview said Skyward Sword was hard, one said it was the hardest YET. Now ONM says it's easier than the easiest?

What's going on?

EDIT: On not especially easy, but easier than TP? Wha? That makes no sense.

I'd say Wind Waker is the easiest actually.

this ign article says that the boss battles in skyward sword are harder than in twilight princess

One key distinction is the Skyward foes tend to be a bit more challenging. One of the key complaints leveled at Twilight Princess was its mature styling was betrayed by a difficulty level that was borderline insulting. The only times I ever died were because of stupid, foolish moves that were overly aggressive - and even then it was tough to die.

It lulls you into a false sense of security with easiness and then kicks you square in the crotch with iron boots so hard that they contain the tormented souls of players that were forever lost in Ocarina's water temple. And then after that brief setback we return to normality and the game continues down the easy path with difficulty spikes out of nowhere.

That disappoints me. Early word that these two specific areas of Zelda were improved (
Harder difficulty and meaningful item/armor upgrades
) had me the most excited.

Definitely still buying the game, but this is the first indication for me that the "Zelda Overblown Hype Train" might be in effect.

This is how I rank Zelda difficulty

Adventure of Link > Majora's Mask > Twilight Princess/Ocarina of Time > Link's Awakening/Oracles > A Link to the Past > The Wind Waker > The Minish Cap > Four Swords Adventure > Four Swords (anniversary edition levels) > Legend of Zelda > Four Swords

Once you know where everything is in the first game you pretty much can breeze through it more than any other game in the series, which is sad cause otherwise it's a game that has aged pretty well. Four Swords is easier, but I put the anniversary edition there too cause it added the Hero's Trial which is pretty difficult.

Maybe the game will be divisive, just like a lot of Nintendo's recent titles.

Think about the Wii's Mario games. There are some people who think that New Super Mario Bros. Wii and Super Mario Galaxy 2 are piss easy, and there are others who think the complete opposite to the point where they can't even complete these games.

Nintendo has been trying to cater to all audiences so it wouldn't surprise me if the difficulty was based on player experience. And even if the game isn't especially hard in any way, at least there's always the options to limit how many heart containers you pick up and limit how much you upgrade your equipment.

A backlash is basically inevitable after a perfect or incredibly high score.

Because it sets up expectations that were not there for the reviewer who gave the score, but are there for everyone else now that the score is out there.

We're in step one. Next one is going to be "Why aren't there more ads? I think they know this game isn't as good as we all think it will be."
