Of course I do. It doesn't exactly take great writing to cut it as a games "journalist." Jeff is one of the worst.

You're entitled to your opinion. I just think it's misguided. Jeff is one of the more respected figures in the industry. Labeling him as one of the worst leads me to believe you somehow have a different criteria than I do for what constitutes a good editorial process.

Personally I didn't like Majora's Mask because I felt less attached to it than I did to OoT. I didn't feel like the quest was as epic, and there was little meaningful history tied to Majora's Mask itself, unlike the way it was in OoT and the Triforce. I also didn't see much of a point behind each dungeon in Majora's Mask, unlike OoT where your task was to awaken the sages that guarded each Temple.

Maybe you were too young when you played it? Majora's Mask did a much better (or at least more involved / complex) job of leading up to each dungeon and explaining why you were doing it (both for the local area and for the big picture of collecting the masks (which is as good a reason as OoT gave (collecting Medallions)).

I guess the concept of wayward masks that are trying to destroy the planet just didn't appeal to me.

It must be that, because there's no real important distinction between the two that one is a good reason and one is not a good reason.

that's a shame. i'd still want to hear is opinion of it though but i doubt he'll play it now

he's like that with a lot of quick looks for games and he often ends up loving them

jeff was a person who had the balls to tell the truth about zelda tp in an era when no-one had the fucking balls to do so

i doubt it'll happen this time but in tp's case a lot of people would have just gave it a ten "because it's zelda"

8.8 is still a great score. In all honesty though its a little bit fucked up that 8.8, a great score can even be considered controversial.

The entire Ikana Canyon region of MM just sucked. Entering & leaving the well over & over because it wants so many little trinkets. Having to play that damn 3 times to solve a puzzle, every puzzle & god help you if screw up the order of the switches & have to start over. That FUCKING mirror shield puzzle! That the Tower is so long that even with a full, slowed down cycle dedicated to it, I'm still fighting the boss with the final minutes countdown going.

& if I hadn't already fuck it to the stray fairies side quest long ago...

Blame Gamerankings and Metacritic. All of a sudden review scores can't stay on their own anymore, they have to be part of some universal opinion bullshit.

"And people really just keep yelling at us to stand up and it's like 'No.'" ::laughs::

But none of those guys seemed terribly interested that day. The best one I remember was one of them playing Wii Sports Golf while sitting and saying "This doesn't feel like real golf."

Regardless of his past, Jeff doesn't seem like a good person to review this game. He seems terribly uninterested in it based on messages he's posted.

From what I've seen on his Formspring, Jeff is at least curious to see what they've done the new game. I wouldn't call him "terribly uninterested" just because his level of hype is so much lower than most game reviewers out there (which to be fair, is quite substantial). And of course, this discussion begs the question, who is more qualified to review a game: somebody who has been greatly anticipating a game for years on end, or somebody who has remained fairly impartial until they finally played the game.

First of all Nintendo has had its fair shares of "repetitive" complaints. Acting like most Nintendo series have never been accused of being repetitive means you just haven't been paying attention well enough.

But I agree somewhat; other big franchises seem to be docked more for repetitiveness than most big Nintendo franchises. Why is that? Well maybe it's because Nintendo doesn't have an average output of three-four titles per generation for its franchises. Lets take a look at the recent output in mainline console games for the major series of the past two generations:

Uncharted 1, 2, 3 (3.0 APG)
Halo 1, 2, 3, ODST, Reach, (2.5 APG)
Gears of War 1, 2, 3 (3.0 APG)
Final Fantasy X, X-2, XII, XIII (2.0 APG)
Upcoming: Final Fantasy XIII-2, XII Versus
Ratchet and Clank 1, GC, UYA, D, SM, ToD, QfB, aCiT, A4O (4.5 APG)
Call of Duty 2, 3, MW, WW, MW2, BO, MW3 (4.0 APG)
GTA 3, VC, SA, GTA 4 (2.5 APG)
Upcoming: GTA 5
Elder Scrolls Morrowind, Oblivion, Skyrim (1.5 APG)
Half-Life 1, 2 (1.0 APG)
Assassins Creed 1, 2, Brotherhood, Revelations (APG 4.0)

Nintendo:

Legend Of Zelda WW, Four Swords, TP, SS (2.0 APG)
Mario Sunshine, Galaxy, NSMB Wii, Galaxy 2 (2.0 APG)
Metroid Prime 1, 2, 3, Other M (2.0 APG)
Donkey Kong JB, Returns (1 APG)
Kirby EY, RTD (1 APG)
Mario Kart Wii, Double Dash (1 APG)
Wii Sports, Resort (2.0 APG)
Mario Party 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 (3.0 APG)
Pikimin 1, 2 (1.0 APG)
Star fox Assault, Adventures (1.0 APG)

As you can see Nintendo rarely releases over 2 games per generation per series. And even then you have titles that are completely different than their predecessors (Four Swords, NSMB Wii*, Jungle Beat, Adventures, and Other M*). The only two series that really deserved the complaints of repetitiveness was/is The Metroid Prime and Mario Party series. They each had a six year span to where (at least) one game was release every two years.

Besides, if you really think Sunshine and Galaxy are totally the same then you obviously haven't played them. One relies on a water jet-pack to move around in a flat world while the other requires you use the force of gravity to travel between small planets. And while you might have a case with WW and TP** (I guess), Skyward Sword is a whole new take on the Zelda Formula while also playing completely differently because it requires full use of motion controls. I mean seriously, saying Mario and Zelda have been repetitive this generation is like saying Nuts and Bolts is ACTUALLY a Banjo & Kazooie game.

* 2D Mario is pretty much a different game/play-style compared to 3D Mario. The same can be said for Metroid.
** Twilight Princess was punished by plenty of reviewers/fans for basically being a rehash of Ocarina of Time.
Actually this kind of makes most sense to me. Good post.
Thinking about it this way, I have to admit that Zelda didn't really become boring before TP - and this was my third Zelda for the GC as I played OoT the first time when I got it together with Wind Waker. So I basically played two Zelda back to back (OoT and WW) and then 3 years later TP - which was probably to much at that point. Makes sense.

Twilight Princess is a very, very good game. But that doesn't invalidate any of the complaints raised against it. It does some things differently, but essentially amounts to a "more" approach to the series. More Hyrule field, more time invested, more items, more size to the dungeons and bosses. It did little new.

That doesn't change the fact that it is my favorite of the 3D titles. I love it, genuinely. It is right up there with my favorite games this gen (does it count? I own the Wii version). But I am so excited for Skyward Sword precisely because it deviates from the formula.

I'm glad we got Twilight Princess. I think it's the apex of that particular style of Zelda game. You can't really get much more out of the traditional titles. They are great to play and remain enthralling to revisit. But it's time to move on.

That's why it's stupid. I'll keep thinking of her whenever I play.

Isn't it spelled Fi anyways? How do you get Fay from Fi?

I didn't see it getting a higher score than SMG2 at GI to be honest, so great news! Also just found out that I'll probably be able to pick up my copy on the 13th at the earliest, for the LE. W00T!!!

Considering there's no voice acting, I think I'll just stick to Fi.
And dang, the release is getting so close for Americans. I still have to wait 'til the 24th.

well you're in luck.

1. The Legend of Zelda 25th Anniversary Medley
2. Kakariko Village Twilight Princess Theme
3. The Wind Waker Symphonic Movement
4. Gerudo Valley
5. Great Fairy’s Fountain theme
6. Twilight Princess Symphonic Movement
7. The Legend of Zelda Main Theme Medley
8. Ballad of the Goddess from Skyward Sword
Is that all? :/ Goddammit Nintendo.

Worked wonders in that Metroid Prime platforming section.

Or several of them...

From the stuff I have read so far, it seems like this game borrows a lot from Prime. Condensed areas, emphasis on retraversal, and the blurring of the lines between dungeon and overworld, all make me think of Metroid Prime. And I love it.

Ok, I wasn't clear enough. Fi is pronounced like rhyming it with "hi". That's what they said at the E3 round table, what Bill Trinen said at SDCC, and that's what the NOA people were still saying at the preview event and the concert in LA. Maybe in Japanese it is pronounced another way.

Figh is good. Better than Fay.

I'm accustomed to Fee, though.

Reminds me of how people pronounce Pi (π) though. In Greek it's less pie, more pee. (Lol.)

Good, cuz Fay doesn't make any sense from Fi. Fee, F-eye, and F-i (as in "it") are the only options.
