Finally getting around to downloading the game.

Can't wait to dig in.

It was only 5GB which was a surprise since I was expecting 15GB for some reason.

If you want the HD texture pack you'll need to download another ~5GB.

Yea I added it but it doesn't seem to have increased the download size? Will I have to wait for the main download to finish before the DLC is downloaded?

Sucks but I'm sure it'll be worth it.

Beat the game yay :) Ending was a little abrupt but fit well with the story. I enjoyed it.

Somehow I missed a statue though. :( I don't know if I have the patience to go back and find it either. I don't generally keep playing games after I beat them unless it's competitive multiplayer.

Bring on Sleeping Dogs 2!!

So I got back from vacation yesterday and was really in the mood to buy a new game. Wal-Mart was the only place open so I went in with the intention of picking up either Sleeping Dogs or Darksiders II. I got to the point where I was totally going to go for Sleeping Dogs until I saw this cover (not my picture):

iRsOgbTuFW25B.png

I'm guessing it's been discussed here already but I couldn't believe how stupid this was. That huge Wal-Mart logo isn't a sticker, it's actually printed on the cover itself. It was literally a deal-breaker for me so good job, Wal-Mart.

Is it just me or is this really stupid on their part?

Try hitting up the custom coverart thread, they probably have one already/can make you one quick.

You'll probably have to wait until the main game has downloaded. With the texture pack Sleeping Dogs is ~10GB.

Go to your map and find it. If you went on all the dates, your map will show you the location of pretty much every collectible.

Will echo what some other people said: SD is currently my GOTY. It's not exactly been a year littered with gems, but there's been some good stuff. Only games on my radar between now and the end of the year are Halo 4, Borderlands 2, and Paper Mario. If any of those can best SD I'll be quite happy.

Knocked out Darksiders II last night and am really looking forward to getting back into this. Darksiders II was fun, but it kind of let me down a bit in the end.

I'm you in reverse. Just finished Sleeping Dogs and moving on to Darksiders II.

You're in for a treat =D

I already started Sleeping Dogs, but jumped over and decided to play on through Darksiders II. What few hours I played was fantastic, though. Should be a nice remedy, so I am glad I saved it.

Just started after the main download finished.

3.7GB. Any killer patches coming up after that or am I done?

v1.4 is the latest I think, but nope, not that I remember. The texture pack is the main thing.

Are those red leather pants Wei is wearing in the screenshot posted a few posts up? I like the red jacket too. Where can you acquire those?

This is a great game.

In most open-world games I'm in a mad scramble to find a gun as fast as I can, but in this one when I get a gun I always feel like "man, who wants to shoot stuff when you can shove someone's face in an A/C unit?"

The bikes also feel really fast when you're going really fast. The minivans are quite crappy.

I enjoy the shooting, now that I already beat the game, I struggle to find a pistol or mission to use them, have been replaying some of the shootout mission, trying to kill all enemies in 1 slowmo run is pretty cool and really satisfying.

I love that money actually serves a purpose, in GTA4 I felt like there was no real point to money outside of buying weapons.

You can replay triad missions by pausing the game, going to Social Hub and scrolling over to Missions. Also, once fully upgraded on the cop track you can retrieve handguns and shotguns from the back of police cars. An easy way to get a handgun is to attack one of the people in the area outside your Northpoint apartment, then disarm the cop that comes and run back inside your safehouse to throw them off your trail.

Anyone know where to find the red pants I asked about earlier (seen in the last screenshot posted in this thread)?

Also, I can't remember: Was there a difficulty level select at the start of the game? Or does everyone play at the same difficulty?

i'm thinking of buying the game from Steam, but i read some earlier pages in this thread about how the PC version has issues for some people, constant crashing and stuttering and shit.

is that still the case or has it been patched? or is it just really rare and i'm likely to have no issues? (i have a decent PC)

Played the game for just under 2 hours.

+ The graphics are great
+ The world is interesting
+ The combat

- The drive stuttering
- The crazy inconsistent mouse sensitivity
- The FXAA

Maxed out the game save for AA (high not max) and I just turned SSAO down to normal for an extra 10 fps. Now I get 50 fps. Still not great but it'll do.

I beat up a middle aged man and took his umbrella. As I was running away I saw a medic running in the opposite direction. I followed and watched the failed resuscitation. The man lay in the rain. Dead. Felt bad man.

Didn't have fraps open so ignore dat steam compression (fix it Valve!!).

I have no issues on PC. Using Steam version. The only thing that really puts me off is the camera sometimes goes batshit when you reverse on a bike.

You can download the demo on Steam and perhaps test performance that way, although I'm not sure the demo represents conditions in the open world. Still, you might be able to play around with the benchmark test.

The PC version is really good. I think GMG has a 30% off coupon somewhere. edit: GMG30-AUGUS-TWINS it comes out to $35

I just hope that some substantial DLC comes out, rather than just a myriad of clothing packs. Since I did 100% the game, and have a rather large backlog (plus college just started back up!), I'm unfortunately going to need something big to pull me back in within the next few months.

I still love the game regardless, and it had plenty to do.

Kind of tempted to buy the red envelope DLC just so I have more stuff to seek out in the city, lol. Apparently it places 20 red envelopes around Hong Kong.

This, along with the likes of GTA IV and Mafia 2, definitely prove that a smaller, denser, more detailed world is better than one that's huge and feels lifeless. I'd really love to get Shenmue 3 or the next Yakuza game in this engine because the atmosphere is incredible. The small dialogue you hear (such as this) or the great attention to detail (such as this) made wandering around the city such great fun. I would say that a lot of the world is designed in quite a ... safe/boring way, to a degree, but the bits that are designed really well make up for it. In the next game I hope they focus a bit more on making every area interesting, which is how I feel about GTA IV, as there are quite a lot of areas that look great but are a bit lifeless. Regardless, those two videos of mine are just a small selection of the great moments I had in the world and I really applaud them for the things they got right.

It must be said that part of the great atmosphere is due to the ridiculous visuals on the PC. This is a "next gen" type of experience for me with a visual standard that is just really rare in games. It's easily one of, if not the, best looking games I've ever played. My only wish is that I could set the entire game to be at night and raining... wowza!

As surprising as the top quality PC port to me was the standard of the story. It wasn't anything groundbreaking or worth analysing too much but it was simply a lot of fun. I'm pretty bored of "undercover cop in gang" stories but they did quite a few interesting things with it and there were a lot of strong characters. I do feel that there was a lot of disconnect between the story and you being an undercover cop, because when I'm running over 40 people in a row it feels quite ridiculous, but by having your cop reputation only in actual missions it did separate the canon from your non-canon actions. With that said, at the end of the game when you're
killing guys all over the place with grenade launchers
I did think it sacrificed the undercover cop story for going out on a bang. A more grounded ending and harsher penalties for killing guys would have been appreciated. It also ended really abruptly and with
no moral choice
which I found weird, but that might be a result of the weird development of the game.

Having said that, I did enjoy the gruesome environmental kills so I'm not sure I would have liked taking them out of the game. It added a much needed flavour to the combat (especially in the club) as, as good as the fighting was, it was a bit samey with no real meaningful upgrades. A proper RPG system with skill trees would have really suited the game I feel. Nonetheless, a few niggles aside (such as that fucking pause when you miss a counter), the fights were something out of a ridiculous kung-fu movie and was a lot better than the likes of the Yakuza games, though obviously it fell short of the Arkham series. I really appreciated the fact that a lot of the missions were designed around melee and guns were ignored for a huge part of the game.

It's a good thing the guns were ignored too because the shooting was pretty mediocre. Serviceable, sure, but boring. There was no feedback when you were firing them or when you hit a target like in GTA IV/Mafia 2 which made those games so fun to have a massive shoot-out in. The last few missions really highlighted this for me. I would say they need to work on it for a sequel, but honestly I'd rather a game where you get a handgun once or twice and that's it. Let the melee thing be your focus and USP.

Now for the weakest part of the game, which is definitely the driving. Simply put, the driving is fucking terrible. I'm struggling to think of a game with a worse driving model that I've played in recent years. It's really awful because in a game like this driving is so important and one of the reasons GTA IV has sucked hundreds of hours out of me is because the driving model in that game is so good. Here I get that they're going for a more arcade feel, but man, it feels like utter crap. Cars don't turn, the brakes feel like they're a handbrake to your momentum, the handbrake itself is used in a weird drift way which doesn't feel satisfying and Jesus Christ Almighty, how bad is that ram mechanic? PUSH X TO WIN LOLOLOLOL. Chases in GTA IV were so tense because you could do so many things with the cars and the physics, the smallest movements and details mattered. Here you can just get alongside a car and push X twice and they're wrecked. No tension, no excitement, no fun. There was not one single mission that included a fun driving section; the chases with enemies and police were laughably bad. It's the only real big flaw of the game, but it's so big that it really impacted by enjoyment. The sequel needs a whole new driving model, either do the arcade thing better or try and replicate the amazing model that GTA IV has (though I'm not sure they could do that in their engine). Really disappointing.

So it's nowhere near God tier like GTA IV and RDR, nor do I like it quite as much as Mafia 2, but after them it's definitely an example of a top class open world crime game. I hope that with a more stable development cycle and perhaps more resources the sequel could get closer to a Rockstar quality level.

Also, I bet you never did anything as cool as this.

Edit: In writing this post I realise I've focused more on what could be changed rather than the stuff I really loved, but that's because it's so close to be a really, really special game. It's one of the best of the year easily, but with a few tweaks it could be a franchise that elevates itself to a much greater status. My slight focus on what I'd change is inspired by my love for so many things it does right and wanting to see the rest of the game catch up with that.

I wish I remembered. After unlocking so much stuff it's all kind of a blur.

If you can't find it in any of the stores, maybe it was one of the lock boxes? I know those give out articles of clothing sometimes.

I have to say I loved the driving and shooting in Sleeping Dogs (especially when you combine the two!). The shooting is FAST and BRUTAL: This is the first game I've played in a while where the guns actually feel powerful. Vaulting over cover, slowing time and just absolutely obliterating enemies in rippling clouds of blood is just endlessly satisfying. There's nothing quite like pulling your car up to some thugs on a street corner and just blasting them all to pieces. And the driving had an incredible sense of speed to it, and the controls were super-responsive. An example of terrible vehicle handling would be the cars in Just Cause 2, imo. Sleeping Dogs had a great degree of control while driving, allowing me to weave in and out of traffic at breakneck speeds on highways and thread through throngs of pedestrians without hurting anyone in the city.

Speaking of which, I didn't see a disconnect between the player's actions and the story, which is the first time I've been able to say this of an open-world game. Wei is written in such a way that you could see him playing it straight or being a bit dangerous in how he conducts himself. But the way I played him, I wasn't running over pedestrians anyway; I bought into Wei as a "good guy" and tried to play him as such. Besides, in a game world like this I'd rather slow down and drink up the sights than cause as much mayhem as humanly possible. I have SR3 and GTAIV for pure unbridled chaos.

I wasn't expecting a "moral choice" at the end, either.
You're in a fight to the death with one of the most evil men in the triads. In real life I'm all about mercy, but in a make-believe videogame it was a LOT of fun throwing that fucker in an ice chipper.
As far as environmental kills go, you could ignore them in nearly all cases and opt for "knock-outs," but the whole point is Wei is a hard-boiled cop who grew up in a gangland environment, and won't hesitate to utilize anything at his disposal during a street fight.

Finally, I don't think the ending was abrupt at all. You had several whiz-bang missions leading up to it. And then at the end of the final mission,
you get the awesome ice chipper finisher... Then Wei being on good terms with Raymond... Then Jiang exposing Pendrew... As well as the scene where Pendrew kills Po... You get Wei's confrontation with Pendrew... Wei being on good terms with Teng... And then Wei walking free as Jiang is established as the new Dragon-head. The triad's most dangerous men are gone, replaced with a "lesser evil" who will at least be more progressive insofar as disbanding the prostitution, porn and human-trafficking practices (if I recall the police report correctly).
I thought it wrapped up the various threads neatly, and was rewarding in that
Wei turned out OK
. Says something about the strong characterization that it affected me so. :)

About 10 hours in on the 360 and I'm loving it. Games like these are my favorite. Like Dust: games that come out of seemingly nowhere for me that end up being one of my GOTY candidates.

The fighting is great, the missions are interesting and fun. The story is decent and I am not nearly as annoyed with the issues others have brought up like the driving and shooting.

I was actually originally so put off by the comments about those aspects and what many were saying were numerous supposed game bugs that I waited to pick the game up.

Glad I did finally pic it up because they are pretty overstated in my mind.

The driving isnt cringe inducing the way some described it. In fact it's pretty decent to good. The shooting certainly isn't RDR, but not much really is. Still it's enjoyable and fun. And I haven't really had any bugs to speak of yet.

Overall one of my favorite open world games this gen. Better then mafia 2 and GTAIV and right along side crackdown and RDR as my elite open world games this gen.

Just beat this, great game.

As it stands if the year ended now, it would definitely make my GOTY list. The combat was a lot of fun, the driving is arcadey but got better once you unlocked the higher end cars, the story was really solid, and the missions were probably some of the more fun, diverse ones in an open world game. A lot of this game had the polish of a 3rd person action game, which is rare in the genre.

The only knocks I have against the game is the fact that it gets a little too easy once you start unlocking more moves and you upgrade your health, but it's not really an issue while you are playing it...it just leaves you wanting to play a hard mode after you are done.

The only thing that really puts me off is the camera sometimes goes batshit when you reverse on a bike.

I thought the camera went batshit on the regular when you tried to reverse anything. You look behind yourself by pulling the right stick back, but that only works when you're going forwards so when you're trying to do some J-turns or other finicky maneouvring the camera just swings all around the place and you have to fight with it.

I didn't mind that so much, but I feel like looking backwards by tilting the right stick back was a really silly idea: it means you can't look upwards while you're in a car. The city in Sleeping Dogs is so gorgeous, but you spend most of your time in a car and once you're in traffic between buildings you only ever see the first storeys of your surroundings. You have to be on foot to actually look up, and even then the camera's really reluctant to let you see those buildings. Such a weird design decision.

So I finished the game last night and I was pretty sure I was done with it, but today I got the urge to just play around a little more and it really cemented my thoughts about it. It's an amazingly well-made game. Regardless of its troubled development it's just a really high-quality product, and taking the troubles into account it's quite remarkable. I just disagree with its fundamental design philosophy. It sticks so closely to that GTA IV formula of a game that's only open world until you start a mission, at which point it's totally, 100% linear with no opportunity to deviate from exactly the course the mission designer laid out. And I can definitely see why other people really like this game, but that's just not what I'm looking for in a sandbox game.

To me Sleeping Dogs just wastes its great mechanics and world by never leaving anything up to chance. Every mission in the game is so rigidly scripted that the open world aspect simply gets in the way. All my best memories from the hundreds of hours I used to spend playing the old GTAs are from the crazy, unpredictable chaos that would erupt at a moment's notice just by existing in those worlds, and it makes modern sandboxes seem so lifeless in comparison because all that can happen in them is what a given mission designer thought up the day he programmed a certain mission. I also feel that by making those missions so guided and linear it only opens up avenues of comparison with the heavyweights of the Guided And Linear genre, things like Uncharted, which Sleeping Dogs can't really hope to compete with in those aspects.

I don't know, it's just not for me, I guess. I certainly had some fun with it, though.

From one day to the other my framerate seems to have dipped by at least 10 fps. No clue how this happened.

And the driving framedrops. How are they caused? Is it because of the game loading in more npc's and cars to keep up with the increased speed.

I hated the driving at first, but the more I used it, the more it was clear that it was the best possible option for the game. I got so good at it that I could use the fastest cars at full speed within the city and hardly ever clip/kill pedestrians. God bless those hand brakes. The only time the game's camera ever messed up was going in reverse. And even then you learn to expect it and account for it. People bitched early on about the shooting, but I thought it was great, especially jumping out of cover and head-shotting people. The game definitely set the new high water mark for open-world games. Also had my favorite GPS. The only time the GPS messed up was when the mission took place under the city via the ocean.

On 360 the framerate never dropped much (if at all ) for me when driving. Unless people are calling Shaky Cam a framerate drop mask.

Holy shit, big moment guys.

I finally got the approval of "you've got guts to wear that!" guy. I walked out of Aspirazone with a new jacket, and instead of that, I hear "you looking good, man!" or something along those lines.

I'm tearing up right now, man. All I wanted was that guy's approval. That's my personal platinum trophy!
