Sleeping Dogs |OT| not releasing this would have been a True Crime

I really liked the driving since it was pretty easy to fling around corners in most cars which is what I care about. Get me to point A or B and so on, I'm not playing Forza and have no interest in it so don't make me turn corners like I have to do in real life.

The velocita handles like it's made of paper though. Guess that's the price to pay for the insane speeds that make all of the car races cake.

This game needs an unlockable (or paid DLC) Sam Jackson mode where Wei Shen introduces himself to everyone as "Wei Shen, motherfucker."

KuGsj.gif
I lost it when he said that.

On the topic of driving does anyone have any tips for turning in cars? For some reason whenever I turn at a normal speed it seems to reset my clean run counter, even though I don't hit anything or stop.

Just beat the game. The last two missions were incredibly intense,
and the torture scene completely took me off-guard
, and I wish that more of the game was like those two missions. I have a few health shrines and deposit boxes to look for, and there are a few favors I didn't complete, but I think I'll put the game down for now and hope that some of the oncoming DLC intrigues me. I really enjoyed my time with Sleeping Dogs though, and the story was significantly better than what I was expecting.

I wish the car dealers sold more higher-end sedans [the Audi/BMW lookalike type cars]. It seems it's either C-class cars, street racers or straight up sports cars.

Just bought this game. Got a steam key for 22€

Its fun and has amazing graphics. It looks like a next gen game to me. Im really impressed. Cant wait to play again tomorrow.

I can say that Velocita is either #1 or 2 in the A class. You can easily blow by everyone in every A class race.

You can't lose with the Velocita unless you run into an immovable object during a race. Funny thing is though when I use it to get to point A to point B I almost end up wrecking it because its so damn fast.

Never could finish this. Had to keep replaying segments because the game would either give me the HKShip.exe crash, or would hard crash the entire computer, forcing a hard reset from the power button. Ugh.

It's the only game that does this to my computer.

Sucks.
Try right-clicking the game's tab in Steam and verifying the cache integrity under Properties. Maybe your game downloaded funny and that's why it's crashing at certain points...?

@Monkeythumbz:
are there plans to release a soundtrack featuring all the original tunes?
Not 100% sure on that one, but I can ask. FYI, please PM me with questions if you want me to give you a speedy response as I'm not on NeoGAF every day (as much as I'd like to be) and might miss something.

Oh man, that is wei cool.

Is the "bringing in cars" to that Tran guy a never ending thing?
No, there are a finite number of Tran missions.

I kinda wished Wei and
Teng, the lady cop
got together but I'm probably the only one.
Not the only one. I genuinely thought it was inevitable on my first play-through, even though I knew it wasn't in the story.

I found it much more fun hurling him over the ledge behind him.
I did this too!

Actually, it's kind of weird for us too, because we're so used to driving on the "wrong" side of the road in most games. :p So I think a lot of us encounter the same problem of gravitating to the right side of the road at first, or getting into vehicles on the wrong side.:p
Yeah, I had this problem as well.

sup guys, got banned for a while so could not put up reviews but here ya go (added to the OT):

ipbq4qzLwHKoU.gif

Average Metacritic score:

PC: 84
PS3: 82
360: 80

Rocket Chainsaw: 80/100
The point is, Sleeping Dogs is a game worth playing. Very much so. And for me personally, it’s going to be very difficult going back
to other sandbox games that lack the complexity and variety of fighting, driving, shooting, running, and all of these things combined,
that Sleeping Dogs has on show. It’s one of my favourite sandbox games from this generation, and recommended to everybody with a
taste for the genre.

G4TV: 90/100
There’s been few times that I’ve been more giddy than when I saw a new environmental kill in Sleeping Dogs. It’s not that using
the environment as a finishing blow is anything revolutionary, but it’s just plain fun. Whether it’s smashing a head into an air
vent, dropping a car engine on someone, throwing them onto a pallet filled with swordfish heads, or impaling them onto a meat hook,
there’s at least one environmental kill to make everybody smile.

GTTV: 83/100
Well-tuned mechanics and a multi-talented protagonist help you make the most of what Sleeping Dogs has to offer. As a part-time cop
and part-time triad enforcer, Wei Shen can consider ass-kicking a full-time job.

Playstation Official Magazine: 80/10
There’s so much to do that the second I finished the triad story, I still found myself compelled to return to my outstanding
events, cop cases and lady missions. And hunt down all those missing secrets. That’ll be a familiar sensation to anyone who loved
Red Dead Redemption or any GTA game

GameSpot UK: 80/100
But Sleeping Dogs is an open-world game in which you're sure to enjoy the structured missions more than the opportunities for
free-form mayhem. It's fun for a while to run around jump-kicking people to death, or fatally tossing them off of three-foot-high
railings.

Joystiq: 70/100
Thankfully, Sleeping Dogs only encroaches the line of being completely derivative but – because it blends so many different ideas
– it never crosses it. It's a good game, but Sleeping Dogs mostly leaves you remembering the media that inspired it and probably
won't remain in your thoughts over time.

EDGE: 60/100
Between them, both mission types offer an at times gripping 12-hour romp of face-smashing, roof-hopping entertainment, regardless
of the technical shortcomings.

Destructroid: 90/100
Sleeping Dogs is what happens when every part is the good part. Four years after the release of GTAIV, a developer has finally
removed Rockstar's crown and placed it upon its own head. While I can't deny Saint's Row has better missions and GTA has a more
detailed world and better driving, neither is as consistent and polished as Sleeping Dogs.

GiantBomb: 80/100
Even when the story sags, the atmosphere in Sleeping Dogs is top notch. The territory of Hong Kong is captured well in spirit, if
not total accuracy. The world around you is more like a greatest-hits collection of notable Hong Kong landmarks, condensed into a
smaller island that still offers plenty of narrow alleyways and bustling streets to explore.

GameSpy: 80/100
In almost every way, this is a very good PC version, and definitely superior to the console versions. We got great graphics
options (including that HD texture pack!), smooth performance, and customizable keys. It's also quite stable -- in almost
25 hours of play I hit exactly two crashes to desktop, and neither cost me any progress. If not for the irritating lack of
consistently clickable menus Sleeping Dogs would be hard to complain about.

IGN: 85/100
I’m not sure why more people aren’t paying attention to Sleeping Dogs, but now that the game’s out, hopefully you won't make the
same mistake. Sleeping Dogs did things that wowed me from the moment I started playing, and it never really stopped. A few finicky
issues aside, Sleeping Dogs has proven itself worthy of joining the top class of open-world sandbox games

The Escapist: 80/100
There are more than a few nods to John Woo when you use gongs, dumpsters and chandeliers to take a guy down. Returning jade statues
to Wei Shin's old martial arts master unlocks more moves that are just fun to pull off. Once I learned to break a guy's knee so
badly the guys around me shudder, I just couldn't stop doing it.

Official Xbox Magazine: 75/100
Thankfully, for as close as it stays to the trusty genre template, Sleeping Dogs delivers some spectacularly entertaining
sequences, especially in its hectic third act. From rollicking vehicle pursuits that let you shoot out rival drivers’ tires to
gratuitously violent kill moves — and even the ability to leap between and hijack moving cars on the fly — the campaign hosts some
truly exciting scenarios.

Eurogamer 70/100
The robust and intuitive fighting system only becomes more flexible and satisfying over time. Based around a simple block-and-counter
method, it allows Shen to tackle gangs of 10 or more at a time, unleashing simple punch and kick combos along with grapple moves and
environmental kills.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

completed the game last week my thoughts:

"Sleeping Dogs is probably going to be my favourite game this year. It’s hard to imagine why Activision wanted to scrap this game as it really excels well as a sandbox game and has refined how we see the genre altogether.

The story is amazing and can hold its own compared to Mafia 2 / GTA4. The combat is great, as well as movement; it’s very responsive compared to GTA4. Car’s are slightly arcade-ish to handle - but considering you can hijack cars and do slow motion shoot-outs it works out pretty well.

Overall Sleeping Dogs is a love letter to Hong Kong cinema; I’ve been mesmerized by its tiny immaculate detail which gives this game so much charisma and charm. Truly one the great gems of this generation.

On a last note, the PC version is just amazing, advance PC options and day 1 HD textures really show that United Front is commited to the PC. Listening to Ninja Tune radio while driving a motorbike down a wet and rainy neon lit sky is just pure bliss."

I really really really do hope for a Sleeping Dogs 2, Shanghai, Tokyo or Seoul would be great locations.

GOTY contender for me personally.

Those review scores dipping into the 80s and below are a black mark on humanity, a violation of all that is good and sacred in the world.

That is horrid. I think I just threw up in my mouth a little. I can't believe they would ruin the box art to that extent.

I think that may be status quo for Walmart. I remember getting ready to buy MLB 12: The Show from there and didn't because of the same thing.

Blame EatChildren.
Wait... He's better than that, right? I mean, he wouldn't give the game a review like that. This game is at least an 11 out of 10.

Eat_Children is my online man-crush, I hope he didn't break my heart with a so-so score for Sleeping Dogs. :(

Mr Orange - I think you should put scores from ppl from GAF... like who listens to critics these days anyway they are all wrong... there are no technical issues with the game, all the mechanics work great, the graphics are stellar - what is there to complain about and they cut out as much unnecessary fluff as possible yet still delivered a fun game from start to finish for 20+ hours

I'd give the game 10/10 - GOTY contender

Currently polling second in Australia's federal election (first in the Gold Coast), this feral may one day be your Bogan King.
Rocket Chainsaw's 8/10 is my score. I regret nothing.

Just beat the game on PC... Man I loved every minute of the game. The last missions were amazing. I usually don't like open world games, but I really really really liked this one.

the car valet is one loyal motherfucker. Even after I bash his head in and throw him off my motorcycle, he still thanks me and urges me to be careful. What a swell guy.

Got the ability to pull a shotgun from a police trunk. So I come across an unattended police car, take the shottie, and go for a little joyride. No problem. Come across a drug mission, and tear into the gang with the shotgun. Wow that thing is loud! I suddenly notice someone shooting at me, and none of the gang was armed. Two cops took offense to my cleaning up the streets, and leads into a footrace before I'm caught and brought to the station. Turns out the police station is right next door to the drug stop, which I guess what brought the cops to begin with, but if they know a gang is hanging out there why don't they take care of it?

He's a bastard in my game. He never has time to bring me my car and his contact keeps disappearing from my phone. I also wish we could save paintjobs for Valet cars.

The car valet only delivers when you're on or very near to a road that's mappable on your GPS.

For example, if you're in the shipyard docks in Kennedy Town or fish market in Aberdeen, the valet won't be able to reach you as those areas aren't mappable on your GPS. Just head out to a main road and the valet will be able to reach you easily enough.

I really like the game especially after the dry months June/July finally a new good game.
Normally I'm not a big fan of the Asian culture and martial arts films in general, so I was skeptical at first but as it turns out there's nothing to worry it's a fine game and the China setting is a welcome change.

The only downside is that after playing for 6h total I still don't know the map, in GTA I would know my way around without a map by then, guess it's cause they send you all over the place and everything is unlocked right from the start?!

Also how do you defeat the fat guys efficiently? If I do anything but counter them they'll grab me, I'm sure I'm missing something?

I just wail on them, not giving them a chance to do anything. When you unlock more abilities, this is pretty easy to do. I just beat a fight club challenge with three fat guys and like eight other guys. Sweet challenge.

Parakeetman

No one wants a throne you've been sitting on!
Question to others who have a JP PS3. So are any of you guys also fucked with the gambling mission on the floating casino for the police mission? since I cant beat it thanks to the stupid shit with O and X being reversed hardwired into the system itself and screws with the game causing it to bug out and I cant advance after the first round of poker mahjong...

To make everything even more pear shaped thanks to that I wont be able to complete the game as the story will not advance unless you complete the police mission too. :/

Extremely disappointed the demo was only combat. Would have loved to get to feel the driving a bit.

Yah that seems dumb. I guess they didn't want to give away plot points since there's dialogue while driving in that 2nd mission. They could just have cut it out though. The driving is one of the funnest things and a big selling point IMO
