September 8th

Yeah... so? I gave a couple of explainations as to why it would be Sept. 8th. Do you have anything else or are you just spamming that image?

One theory I was entertaining was that Sony was retooling existing 80GB inventory to 160GBs that they could continue to sell, with games, for $399 while pitching the Slim at some point under that.

Would fit with the Ars mole's information that the 80GB would dry up but 160GB supply would remain unconstrained for the time being.

Reboxing 80GBs as 160GB bundles would let them keep selling those machines at $399 - i.e. without a massive extra loss.

Damn you that was my idea, see about 20 pages back.

Hmmm. The "new" Elite and the 80 GB PS3 are going to be the same price. Is there a chance that the PS3 Slim will be Sony's answer the the 360 Arcade? Is there a chance that Slim will be $199? If Sony can set a price that is competitive to the 360, things will get VERY interesting.

Also...

It is possible. Depends on how much the manufacturing cost dropped.

Look at it this way either way there will be a $299 PS3.

And that's the most important part here, whether or not the slim is real or fake (which is almost assured to be real).

Even if they just stuck with the phats and dropped to $299, everyone wins.

You'd think that would be the case wouldn't you , but trust me, there's people on here that won't be happy until the PS3 that is @ the 360 arcade price, as if these people were ever going to buy a PS3.

these magical trolls of which you speak were never going to be happy, so you can't count them in the equation.

Pretty much, whatever happens at this point you will be able to pick up a PS3 this holiday at $299, whether or not it's a slim is what's in question atm.. Either way, Sony really needs to go the Apple route in terms of keeping secrets till the last minute. Seriously Sony, you have failed big time. :lol

Well, the issue here is that if the slim is indeed 399, and 80gbs are 299.. there's a limited supply of 80gbs. As far as we can tell, the 80gb is done. Which means that before too long, there *won't* be a 299 ps3 on the market once again.

Yeah for about a month max. Those 80GB ps3s will become very hard to find not long after this drop. Like I've said, there will be a spike for a small amount of time, but then it'll just go right back to where it was.

D'oh! moment...? :lol

If people see a new model or a price cut incoming then many will not go out and buy, what im saying is don't let a new SKU or a price drop leak months before you even plan on announcing it.

was the price leaked "months" before "they even plan on announcing it"?
If months=weeks, then yes... otherwise, a month ago everyone though Slim is launching at $399 for sure. Heck, half of the juniors still think it is.

as to the leaks, i am pretty sure that Sony likes being in the media :D

I think if you guys are not getting a PS3 'cause you think the slim is just around the corner, then you're going to be waiting for a long long time.

Wait for a price cut by all means but don't wait for a slim because it's not going to happen anytime soon...

that would require a lot of work though, a new serial number and product number. If they are stopping the fat production, the main reason i can see for a lot of 160gb inventory is because no one bought them. There is most likely a shitload of 160gb inventory from straight up lack of demand.

What are you basing this on ?

On common sense. Sony should be spending all there effort and resource in trying to make the existing PS3 as cheap to manufacture as possible. When they have completed on all die shrinks, combined as many chips as possible and reduced cost to the barest minimum, well, then you'll see your slim. I think we talking a couple of years time.

so you're talking completely out of your ass.

Why are people still shocked by the slim being released? I didnt think it was even a question anymore, the conversation has moved on to the price, not if it exists.

I was referring to the slim, it has been known for many months. As for pricing, that has also been know for some time, especially with the slim surfacing it is assumed a new pricing bracket will accompany it.

Bottom line is Sony is utter shit at keeping secrets, it can actually be a very big deal with a company as large as this one, if they don't shape up I have the feeling we'll be seeing be seeing leaked pics and specs of the PS4 with the year!

The small stock of fats left by September will be sold for 299 with bundled games and the slim will be (I hope) 299 with no bundled games.

Hey, someone gets it.

You're right, but the thing is why the hell would Sony shelf a 120GB slim and a 160GB phat @ $299 and $399 respectively?

For a short time last year, some retailers also had to stock 40gb and 80gb ps3's at the same price. It seemed to work out fine.

Edit: Not sure what's wrong with selling the slim at $300 while allowing the 160gb to run out at $400. What else is Sony supposed to do about that? Pretty soon that 160gb will be replaced by a 250gb slim sold at $400.

This.

It's also the point that many who are claiming Sony would be stupid to launch the slim at $399 are missing. Those same people are saying the Slim isn't worth anything extra over the fat, and that being slim is not that much of an additional incentive.

Well, I'd imagine that's what Sony would bank on. The fact that people who want a PS3 over the holidays, will pick up the $299 PS3 even if they want, but cannot necessarily afford the $399 (naturally it might not be this price) slim. In the same way that people might buy a 360 Core instead of an Elite. Just because there's a better version there they can't afford, doesn't mean they will automatically get a different console instead. Especially when the main difference is mainly cosmetic.

Most people (especially parents buying gifts for their children) wanting a PS3 are not suddenly going to buy a 360 if they see the slim at $399. They will simply buy the $299 PS3 instead. I can totally see Sony keeping the slim at a higher price point till supplies are completely gone of the 80GB. But the 160GB getting a new price drop at $399 and still being plentiful in supply makes me think they may not even announce the slim at all. If they do, surely it's gotta be priced similar to the 160GB fat? A $299 80GB slim would only ensure sales of the $399 160GB fat plummet.

So Sony annonces new 299 $/€ price for PS3 "fat" at Gamescom and slim@299$/ € at TGS? One month and a half to clear PS3 fat stocks if slim debuts in october? PSP go & PS3 slim to launch in the same time frame?

Really. Then show me the evidence. All i've seen are whole load of blurred pictures and photoshops...

There is no evolution here, you can't magically shrink everything into a smaller case at a cheaper price without having the history of die shrinks, combining multiple chip functions etc... It doesn't work like that.

Seems these multi-nationals have a desire to play their cards close to their chests. Hence the evidence is such as it is.

On your other point, that's true. Haven't there been any Cell process shrinks at all? I'm talking Cell and not just PS3 (although I don't pay close attention to this stuff so for all I know there could well have been PS3 evolutions too).

Cheers.

PS3 game packaging appears to have changed drastically!
WTF that's so NORMAL. And too much like Xbox 360... This better be only for PSN titles.

I mean, apart from the PlayStation 3 on the plastic part of the case, it doesn't even have a PS3 identifier anywhere. You can't just use the PS Family logo - what is this for, PSone? PS2? PSP? Oh... PS3!

Keep the vertical logo please! Just find a better way to add the PlayStation Network logo to the existing box for games that have PSN functions. And how have they not gotten rid of that goddamn PSN feature circle with that overhaul? WTF, SCEE.

They talked about the 45nm die shrink last year. So the history is 90nm->65nm->45nm, but who needs facts when you can post FUD?

Wow.. are you serious? I suggest re-reading the entire history of this thread, and if you still think it's all rubbish, then I must say you're a fool bro.

Would you like to bet a ban that it exists? You'll be proven wrong within a months time anyways.
