It's clearly fake, and for one MAIN reason:

PS1 -> PSOne

PS2 -> PSTwo

PS3 -> PS3? lol.

Should be PSThree

You make it sound like the plastic adds 300$ to the cost of PS3. You do realize that majority of cost-revisions are going to be internal - whether or not there's a slimdown.

13 million to be shipped 2009 year alone.... few bucks = $100 million savings. Every cent matters.

PS2 was never rebranded into PSTwo. They just released it.

I'll have to check the box of mine at home when I get back, but I'm sure I remember seeing PSTwo on there somewhere, along with the traditional PS2.

The only people who called it PSTwo were either uninformed or liked the PSOne moniker and hoped Sony would do something similar for PS2. Which they never did.

Oh hey, the word 'two' was on there. But that's it.

Of course - he just made it sound like the form-revision was the only thing that would make a difference though.

Don't think they'd be making retail boxes for a prototype.
They don't - and I'm not aware of prototypes ever getting leaked either, even though there's lots of them evaluated over time (for instance PS2 with XMB, or PSP with internal memory both existed at least a year before PS3 was even released).

I will re ask here:

What do you think will change if this is real?

- i would like to see some rear USBs.
- HDMI-CEC
- HDMI chip updated to bitstream new audio formats.
- IR chip.
- wireless N.

I would love that.

Personally I think there is compelling evidence to think this could be the real deal and if Sin says September, then I believe him.

I'm not sure why some people believe there will not be a PS3 slim when Sony has a history of redesigning their systems to be smaller. Heck we already know a new PSP redesign is coming why not a PS3 redesign?

I already have a fast speed on my wireless router but I bought a new router that does wireless n on a dual band and hoping to use it with something.

Wireless G is well over the average person's connection speed, but wireless N would help considerably for media streaming and network range.

yeah but dont expect ps3 to have dual band... and i will be glad once i have it in my hands and i confirm that it works... wireless n was supposed to be the best thing since sliced bread and it sucks ass.... in real life, not much better at all than wireless g.

for any kind of media streaming, wire is the king....

No you're right.

The Two was in the bottom right corner.

Sorry about that one. Been a long time since I had the PS2 out. I'm a dick.

Yea but that's next year, however I am sure there will be a GoWIII bundle.

If this is true and comes out in September it will probably be released in Japan first then probably March of next year in the states.

I'd definitely buy another PS3 if this news is true.

I was going to call you out on your post but someone beat me to it. Up to now I believe the news of a slim PS3.

There is no doubt in my mind that those casing pictures are very real. The box on the other hand is aother story.

And i like the way it looks for the record. Moreso than the original.

i know they said they knew nothing about it but...any news about it?

"We don't comment on rumors, but thanks for asking" kinda response. Read that how you will.

The box having been printed with the elements of North American release packaging on there already, my hope is for simultaneous world-wide release, if not North American and Asian/Japanese markets then Europe.

:lol

yeah fair enough. It's been a while since I looked at the box for my Pink Slim PS2. I just remember seeing the Two SOMEWHERE, and because most media outlets refert o it as PSTwo, I guess my old brain just connected the two.

Yeah, happy to admit defeat on that one.

On that note though, I still think this particular Slim PS3 is fake.

They'll save millions on Shipping. Smaller box means they'll fit more into a container, less space needed for warehousing too.

Actually, I'm a little surprised there haven't been any murmurs of a "slim" 360.

Surely the same benefits that Sony stand to reap from a redesigned PS3 (reduced cost, fresh public awareness etc) would apply to Microsoft as well?

Perhaps the hardware debacle has scared them away from making any major design changes...

$399 for the new model is my prediction with the current model dropping to $299. Then later in the year or early next year they can drop it to $299.

I think that a BC model at 399 would sell better than a 299 non BC

Well the build quality of the two are vastly different in terms of parts and the 360 has heating problems as is. Personally I think the current PS3 model was rushed* to counter MS as it is pretty crowded, the original 20 and 60 moreso.

I can't see a slim 360 in MS at this point. They're already selling well enough and creating a new model has the potential to cause a slew of new problems if there's more to the cooling trouble they had. Not likely at all, if they were going to they would have done it with their NXE and really get a big push.

In Sony's financial report they said that they expect PSN sales to triple in 2009 (YoY)...

That is a HUGEEEEEEEEEEEEEE increase.

Is this a sign that PS2 + PS1 games will get a BIG push on PSN this year? FINALLY?

That's the ONLY way I see them making that kind of loot YoY on PSN. I mean, library wise they're probably going to release a similar number of PSN games and DLC...the only way to greatly increase sales is to put their catalog up on the store.

Which, if true, would mean that the new PS3 Slim would have PS2 BC. Which would be gigantic news.

If they come out with a $299 PS3, BC, and a new slim model then I see Sony doing quite a bit better than 13 million units this year with the software they have and those features for the new slim.

So in April of 2010, they are predicting sales of 381k?

People need to get over BC. It's overrated and the majority rarely, if ever, have the fortitude to subject themselves to the horrific images of PS2 games on a hi-def TV. BC is just a crutch for people that aren't ever going to buy the console.

Will buy if true. The price ($300) isn't as much of an issue, but the ps3 is just too damn big and glossy for my taste. I don't care that much about having the current systems, but the amount of awesome PS3 and PSN games is reaching critical mass for me.

I'm finding this hard to believe:

1. Has Sony even turned a profit on the PS3, hardware-wise, yet?
2. If not, and if the 45nm RSX and Cell chip (is it going to be on the same chip?) is supposed to make the PS3 cheaper to manufacture (therefore, more profit), wouldn't you think Sony would rest on the extra profits for a little while before jumping with a new design? Especially with how much they've already lost, plus their less then favorable position amongst Microsoft and Nintendo.

Smart business would tell Sony to let the new chips turn a little more profit for them before redesigning the PS3. However, there's another side. Some people (me included) would find the new, redesign PS3 attractive, and buy it. Redesign = more people buying it = recover financially?

Well I think they are striving to make a PS3 relaunch, since they are behind the competitors, they need something new that will lure the consumers towards them.

1. I don't think it has
2. Theoretically, a smaller redesign that has a more efficient design would cost even less to make, so Sony will bleed less money and turn a profit quicker. hell, minus the R&D, the PS3slim might turn them a profit out the gate. who knows.

No, it means that PSP games are going to be distributed via PSN.

A slim has the potential to move like shit off a shovel so why shouldn't they do it? They've saved enough space inside that it doesn't make sense to keep using the same hulking case. The Japanese and I'm sure other markets go nuts for new models especially if they offer tangible benefits in size or price.

A slim could even make Sony more money in retail. For example everyone is demanding a price drop. They could reduce the old stock by $100 but only knock $50 off the slim to satisfy this demand. Take your pick. I bet a lot of people will pick the slim which effectively means Sony are making $50 more per sale off than they would for the old stock. They can enjoy months of good sales while the old stock depletes which probably goes all the way up to the holiday season. At that point they'd probably have to pass on the full reduction but they'd have saved themselves millions and millions in the interim.

That's just one scenario of how it might be sold. Alternatively they could do what they did when the 80Gb supplanted the 40Gb - drop the price for the console but charge $100 more for "premium" model which comes with more storage, a few games and a controller to justify the disparity. If the pics are to believed then the slim comes with a 120Gb drive which again might lend credence to that strategy.

In summary, a slim is the natural conclusion of all these cost saving measures. Sony would have to be dumb not to go there.

I can think of an easier explanation for this jump in expectations - the new PSP. If people can only buy games online then online sales are going to jump sharply.

Japan will eat this up if true.

Colors, they need to release it in more colors. Every Japanese person must own every color or they're essentially dishonoring their ancestors.

Aren't PSP downloadable games included in PSN?
If so, just release more games like Patapon 2, and you have not triple but quardiple sales YoY.
