So....India

I am ethnically Indian (sikh), born in the UK and I've only been to India twice in my life (age 6 and 11), but remember the poverty and trash well.

I take no issue with the internet or certain individuals shining a torch on how dirty and backwards many parts of the country is. Whilst also showing how horrific some of the poverty is there. I'm also cool with the Internet discussing issues in the UK and I'll frequently watch vids about the drugs crisis in the US for example.

I've never quite understood why some Indians gets so butthurt about this and want to protect what looks like a failed state for many Indians. If the country is so great then why are so many desperate to leave and leaving in their droves? China and other Asian nations managed to organise themselves out of high level of poverty and dysfunction and build excellent infastructure and much cleaner environment, whilst India hasn't and at this rate will it better any better in 2050 then it is now?

Probably not if Indians think the problem are the YouTubers making vids about it and not the mountains of trash and human excrement beneath their feet.

I'm not sure what people expect. It's a developing country and overcrowded. It's GDP per capita is like a days salary for a lot of people in the west. Are there other poverty stricken countries with this much crowding that are cleaner and less polluted?
Plenty of underdevelopment countries all over the world none are as disgustingly dirty and unhygienic as India.

I'll also add, as per many of these videos. You'll see that many Indians, even the poor, are very kind and honest people who will go out of their way to help you.

They deserve a better more prosperous, cleaner and modern country and I hope they get it someday.

As someone who emigrated myself, I do see a problem with the ease of global mass movement. If place X is better than your home, then you have a choice, help make your home as good as place X or just leave and go to X. The more that happens, the harder it'll be for struggling places to raise up.

The UK drones on about how the NHS wouldn't survive if it weren't for migrant doctors (likely from India), and all I hear is:

"Hey India, thanks for your doctors, sucks to be you, just don't try and get sick ok. Love, UK".

Preface: I have personally met some nice Indians, but also a lot of annoying ones. Your results may vary

Recently the internet has been aghast at a documentary about a poop throwing festival in southwestern India. This comes after harsh criticism over their other practices, such as throwing trash off trains, polluting local and foreign water sources, and even airplanes. Suffice to say, their reputation is in the shitter. Is this a cultural problem? An education problem? Or both? Whatever it is, I think it's gross

I think we're finding out why Alexanders men flat out refused to march any further.

That's a problem for sure (coincidentally I was just there last week and boy did I get angry at people throwing flowers in the river, though it did seem much cleaner than I expected it to be), but that's a pass for random racism? One can find hundreds of idiotic backwards things for any country. I don't see such casual online racism given a pass for any other country.
I don't want to get into arguments with strangers and it's fine to have whatever opinion you want. I have my opinions on USA, but I don't pretend to be OK with tarnishing whole US population for whatever backward shit the country has in multitude of areas.
I will leave my piece at this. Got video games to play. Take care.
I don't give a pass to any country or any people, I hate them all.

I have a lot of indian friends who dont want to talk about this stuff either. it's really weird but they live in mansions, have dozens of servants, and never see this level of poverty. I remember them telling me how people straight up walked out of the theater because they thought slumdog millionare was anti-indian propaganda. I also sense a bit of a superiority complex with them. But that could also be because they are all filthy rich.

If you compare india to other third world countries, it's doing much better. Their population is very educated in comparison. They have a massive force of tech workers simply not seen in other third world countries. Partly the reason why so many U.S tech companies are opening offices there.

The upper middle class there has enough money to send their kids abroad for college. They pay international rates which are 3x more expensive than local tuition fees. Those same kids are smart enough to then get hired then rise up to CEO of the biggest tech companies. How many other third world countries are doing this? You dont see many african, latin american, and arab countries with a workforce that can handle all that outsourcing from western countries. Or CEOs that end up taking over trillion dollar companies after rising through their ranks.

There will always be shitty parts of every country. Go to skid row in LA or some SF neighborhoods and you will see literal zombies. Even NYC has some areas where you literally have whores on the streets. Google Roosevelt Avenue NYC. Easy to find trash just to shit on an entire country. Right now, everyone hates india because of the H1B fiasco created by Elon, Vivek and Trump, so they are enemy no.1. next year, there will be terrorist attacks and the conversation will flip back to some shitty muslim country. All the while we ignore real problems at home. Like almost a million homeless people, 14 million kids who go to sleep hungry, horrific infant mortality rates (like bottom five compared to other first world nations), worst healthcare in the free world, over 1 rape per minute, and much much more. But hating on third world countries throwing poop at each other is more important than fixing our own issues.

You are comparing drugs addicts in America to everyday people in India not a good look for India try comparing apples to apples and the rest of your rant is pure whataboutism. Lack of hygiene, shitting in the street and throwing trash out of a moving train isn't the governments fault.

Have a blessed day.

Save them for the people shitting on the side of the road and using filthy sewage water for their everyday needs because who needs hygiene right?

Point out where I said don't discuss. I'll wait. I see you defending an appalling lack of hygiene because indians abroad get good jobs and America has junkies.

I thought the poop thing was just internet memes. I didn't know there was an actual fuckin' festival around it.

Fascinating watch. Thanks for sharing. I hope next time he makes a video on driving in India, it's a rollercoaster.

I visited India back in 2018.

I still remember getting off the plane in New Delhi and with all the absolute meaning of the word literally the combination of the heat, smell of the pollution and the BO was an actual tangible wall. Like a fog you could touch with your entire body.

Got super sick from eating at the hotel restaurant.

My friend would warn me to only drink water from packaged bottles. But he also warned me to watch out as some kids who want to make money will recap old bottles with tap water and sell it as new. 😢

With that said, going more north east, the country / mountainous side is absolutely beautiful and the air is much fresher. Plus the people that I met were super super kind. Despite the absolute poverty, they were actually very happy people.

Also, very fascinating to see the thinnest cows ever.

I try not to be racist, but when I think of people from India, I can't help but think when I was in my early 20s, and I worked at a movie theater. It was a smaller budget one, and we used to rent out auditoriums to a group that would show bollywood movies for just a bunch of indian people.

Without fail, every single time we did one of those, the entire theater smelled like shit. Not just the auditorium they were in, but the entire building. The projection booth, the lobby, the other auditoriums. The smell carried everywhere, and didn't leave for at least a day or more.

I moved there in 2009 for the Army, was stationed at Fort Lewis. My daughter was born in 2011, so I stuck around even after getting out of the Army. I left four years ago for Maine and it was the smartest decision I ever made. I won't get into it much, but I saw the opposite of a freeze to be honest with you, made tons of friends, but I just think the entire Puget Sound area is ran like absolute shit. I'll never forget passing two roads that were both closed down for shootings while driving my daughter seven minutes down the road for school, both shootings on the same day. I'll never forget the absolutely toothless bully cops that would never do shit if you called them and were incredibly goddamn rude assholes. I'll never forget the massive wave of green and blue hairs always throwing a shit fit about one thing or another. I'll never forget the BLM riots, ahem, protests......that utterly destroyed so many black owned businesses while cops and civilians alike did jack shit to stop it.

I always say that WA would easily be the best state in the country if not for Washingtonians. I moved to Maine because New England is the last part of this country left with at least some common sense left, and so far so good. The crazies are here too, but in VASTLY smaller numbers, so they're easy to ignore, and cops here do not fuck around.....hell if anything they might be a bit overzealous, but that's a different conversation.

For what it's worth I'd still take Seattle over the south. There's not enough money in all the bank accounts in North America to ever convince me to live in the South again, not even for a year. I've never hated a place more, and I used to think it was just because I grew up there so perhaps it was just one of those things, ya know? I meet people all the time her who can't wait to get out of Maine, which I get man, if it's all ya know then you have to travel, it's important. I stayed in TN again for a week about six years and my whole family utterly abhored the experience. It's just fuckin disgusting down there, just giant disgusting ignorant fat smelly loud idiots as far as the eye can see..... except anyone on Neogaf who lives in the south obviously. ;D

The south has become 'Rightland' while the west coast has become the left coast. They can have both of those dumps, I'll stay in the northeast.
You should write travel guides to the United States. I enjoyed both of your posts immensely, made me LOL.

There is, but it's a festival most of us Indians didn't know about either. We got to know about it from the video only.
There is always weird shit (pun intended) in big countries. It's more in India I'd say but it's a country of 1.5 billion people. I mean just yesterday I saw cow poop throwing festival is USA where people are supposed to lick their fingers between throws. Shit happens (pun intended, again).
That said, in general we need to up our basic social contract/etiquette sense seriously. The stereotypes are not completely wrong.

Edit- also want to appreciate the discussion here. It's surprisingly nuanced with some very good points. If it was reddit, it would be nothing but racist jokes without any serious discussion.
