So, Polygon 'playing' Doom...

False. You are looking at the wrong video. The original 30 min one, made by Polygon, has comments (and the Like/Dislike bar) disabled. The video mocking Polygon has comments enabled.

Not that it necessarily means anything, as I wouldn't blame anyone from disabling comments in general, but it's telling that their other videos has no such lock.

That's so strange. Is it possible to lock comments on mobile, but not desktop, or vice versa? I'm looking at the "first 30 minutes" one and comments are enabled. Comments are disabled for you guys at this link? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9yYp8ZeQ-I8

I see the comments and just left one. I'll post a screenshop when I get home. Totally aside from that, do people really think it's fair to edit out the worst gameplay from 30 minutes, turn it into a 2 minute video and say "git gud Polygon!"?

Comments are disabled for this video.

Also, the rest of the video is bad too.

"A movie critic looked at his cellphone during a BvS screenig, review invalidated because he watched it wrong"

Except here the equivalent would be if the reviewer was playing Clash Royale all throughout the film.

I thought it was a dumb one off thing, but that video confirms this person does not know how to play with a controller. The only reason the player gets kills is because they run up and melee kill literally almost every enemy after emptying and missing a full clip.

No.

But I do think its fair to mock someone who plays games for a living when they can't move their left and right thumbs simultaneously.

It's not like the 30 minute video was scavenged to pull out the only 2 minutes of embarrassing game play making him look unfairly bad. If I went in and pulled out all the footage from the original that I thought was chuckle inducingly bad I'd probably have about 27 minutes of video.

I forgot how bad that review is. What a dope.

Totally comparable example! Great job mate!
I mean that sounds incredibly petty and sad but ok.
Yeah. It's so sad to think that you should be able to perform a job for which you are paid.

What an unrealistic, petty and elitist expectation.

I wonder how long I would last at my job if I started performing as incompetently as Polygon. A day, maybe? A couple hours?

Seems like someone who is literally paid to play video games should display an ability to operate a controller. Guess not.

No, John. You are the demons.

If I were to make a list of the pettiest reasons I've seen people on NeoGAF have for making fun of someone, someone actually being bad at their job doesn't even make the top thousand.

It's not a reason for people to grab their pitchforks and torches and march on Polygon's office, but it's absolutely worth having a laugh over.

People are really grasping at straws to defend polygon here lol. You are right that someone previewing games should have a basic level of competency. Movies are not an interactive art form so that comparison is really stupid. Any interactive activity inherently implies a basic barrier of entry. If you can not do basic tasks that 90% of videogames require from you (move and aim at the same time) then you are probably in the wrong field, and should ask for someone else to preview the game.

Fucking hell people, who cares? Only in the gaming community will we have a 22+ page thread complaining about a guy's playskill based on a single gif.

I guarantee you that I could go through any of your gameplay footage and find less than stellar gameplay.

I have several, super simple explanations for this;

  • It's just one enemy, who among us hasn't just lazilly tried to take out the last enemy in a room?
  • it surprised him
  • up close enemies are really annoying to deal with in FPS games

I come back to this thread today and it just keeps delivering.

On the Elite I always have 8 fingers active

on a keyboard, 3 fingers are tied to movement, if i need to activate some ability I need to use one or more fingers that is used for WASD movement
Thus, using abilities impairs my movement, this is never a problem in an Elite controller

KB/M is trash compared to Elite

What game are you playing that impairs your movement while using an ability on KB+M compared to your $150 gamepad that eliminates that issue for you?

That's bullshit.

Why the fuck would you do that? It makes minor adjustments much easier, but much slower overall. I can't see how that is really beneficial unless you only play AWP at the back of the map.

Plenty of professional players do it as well. People do what works for them. Apparently this fact still surprises some people.

because in a game that requires you to be able to make minor adjustments quickly and effeciently, it's beneficial to have a lower sens

or you can play on 10 sens/1000 dpi because OMG LOOK HOW FAST I CAN SPIN

This is gold. Somebody print this post and frame it.

Also the mouse.... when you track an enemy you need to swipe it and then lift it and put it back in a center position so you can continue to swipe it to track enemies.

so if you need to use an ability while you are tracking an enemy, you can find yourself stalling completely since you need to reset the mouse position while you release the WASD key
it is ridiculous

My god.

Mocking someone is different from joking with someone. Also, this footage is from one their video people so what's this talk about "doing their job"?

A person working for a video game publication putting out the publication's official preview of a game is "doing their job". Playing the game is a part of that. If they're not up to playing it they can always find someone who can. Any publication that takes itself seriously like polygon claims to would hold their content up to a standard and not out out substandard videos.

Wait. Where are thumbs in all this?

I would assume they got paid to play this game and record it, as Polygon is in fact a business who generally pays their employees. If so, it was in fact their job. And as a video whose purpose was to demonstrate an at the time unreleased game, it does a very poor job.

Now there could be extenuating circumstances, where due to lack of available personnel they had to give the task to someone who has never held a controller in their life (I somehow doubt that would ever be necessary), but if so that's a failing of management for assigning someone to do a job they were clearly incapable of doing well.

I see "First 30min of Doom" not "official preview" so I don't follow.
Also, the video is pretty fine outside of that gif. Not amazing or anything but competent.

Yeah, I'm surprised someone would set it that low on purpose, not that someone has a different play style, obviously.

Quickly being the issue from my view, a longer drag for the same screen distance in not quicker by any measure, it is slower, but limits overshooting the mark. It is only faster if you always over aim.

I agree man, screw all of these noobs. I will attempt to further expound upon the brief synopsis of nubbe the wise with my treatise on the indisputable and inherent superiority of controllers.

Now I don't know how much you guys know about controlling avatars in video-games(I'm an expert) but being noob or pro is a huge part of it. It's not like in real sports where you can be succesful by being an asshole and just start Lance Armstronging on the PEDS so you can move your mouse arm faster. If you start tripping out on the TRT and go all roid rage and launch a mouse into the atmosphere as a result you bring noob to yourself, and the only way to get rid of that noob is a controller.

What this means is that the pro controller guys are not going to want you to join their PRO MLG 360 noscope team because you clearly can't control your avatar properly. Nor will they purchase any of your stupid glowy klickitclack lcd keyboards or infinite scroll mouses. This is HUGE

All of you KB/M scrubs should publicly apologize and purchase controllers or you can kiss your pro status goodbye...

"A movie critic looked at his cellphone during a BvS screenig, review invalidated because he watched it wrong"

Jesus Christ, that is terrible comparison. A far better one would be a chess tournament commenter not knowing how to play chess AT ALL to the point he doesn't know the most basic moves. People would laugh at him too and never trust him again.

Part of being a professional is being proficient and even excelling at your profession.

This previewer is not a professional at video games; That's for damned sure.

If I were became incompetent in my career I would loose it in a heartbeat.

Maybe this is why journalists like Walking Simulators so much?

This is a joke. I think the gifs in here are hilarious and I just wanted to contribute something.

The difference in speed between low and high sensitivity is negligible with how mouse aim is 1:1.

So I just need to ask, is this the time when we finally go full "deus vult" on the casual menace scum and make video games great again?

'Cause I'm over here like

right now, just enjoying Doom and kind of ignoring it all.

Trolling is a art.

I thought that that second post went a bit too far but it seems it flew as well.

I don't know, if you exaggerate each example, it seems straight forward to say that moving the mouse half an inch for half the screen would always be faster than moving the mouse 2 feet for half the screen. Is the difference between them negligible? I guess that depends how you define that, it is only fractions of seconds I guess, so not unfair to say.
