So, Polygon 'playing' Doom...

Why the fuck would you do that? It makes minor adjustments much easier, but much slower overall. I can't see how that is really beneficial unless you only play AWP at the back of the map.

I knew a pro quake player who played low sensitivity on a HUGE mousepad. I think he actually ended up going back to higher sensitivity but it worked fine for him. I'm too lazy to move my arm around that much.

On the Elite I always have 8 fingers active

on a keyboard, 3 fingers are tied to movement, if i need to activate some ability I need to use one or more fingers that is used for WASD movement
Thus, using abilities impairs my movement, this is never a problem in an Elite controller

KB/M is trash compared to Elite
I think Polygon is hiring, send them your CV.

Also the mouse.... when you track an enemy you need to swipe it and then lift it and put it back in a center position so you can continue to swipe it to track enemies.

so if you need to use an ability while you are tracking an enemy, you can find yourself stalling completely since you need to reset the mouse position while you release the WASD key
it is ridiculous

Oh my.....what?

Seriously. What?

I can't even.... Do you even play games?

Or is this an extremely clever troll attempt?

I think it's undeniable that a mouse is superior for aiming, however, I'd argue a controller is superior to a keyboard for the majority of games we play.

Having analogue and 360 degree input for one thing and is fantastic.

A big factor is that these games are specifically designed around console controllers.

If you try playing games like CS:GO on console, it's incredibly less "skill-based" than the PC versions.

For platformers, fighters, flight/driving games (heh), and 3rd person character action games that don't rely heavily on aiming, I'd say yes.

The problem is that the benefits from mouse aiming far outstrip the benefits from analog movement.

This is all ignoring that the steam controller gives you both and makes this entire tangent irrelevant.

I'm starting to think we need a video accompanying every game review that shows how the reviewer played the game.

That's the beauty of Let's Play's. The amusing thing is, without wanting to sound too arrogant and condescending, a lot of journalists are actually pretty bad at games. Definitely changes the perspective of reviews, because I'm not really a casual gamer myself, so sifting out the opinions of other more skilled gamers is likely to offer me more relevant opinions.

I remember doing that while dogfighting in X-Wing. In FPSes though? LOL no.

Wanna test this theory in an online match with any FPS?

The mouse is a superior pointing device than the right analog stick, but gamepads are far better than a keyboard at everything else. Far more ergonomic as gamepads are actually designed for games while keyboards were jury rigged into gaming devices, one thumb for 360 degree analog movement vs. three fingers for 8 direction digital movement, keyboard forces you to remove fingers from movement to do most actions besides shooting and jumping whereas the only time you need to remove your finger from the left analog stick on a gamepad is when using the d-pad which is typically used for weapon switching, I can reasonably use a gamepad while sitting on a couch whereas I have to be sitting at a desk to properly use a keyboard & mouse.

I hate seeing PC gamers act like mouse & keyboard is infinitely superior to the gamepad in all ways and has no flaws and the gamepad is just a pile of shit with no redeeming value. I hate using mouse & keyboard and actively avoid all games that force me to do so.

Anyone mention that Brad died to 2nd mob in the Quicklook? lol Did he break his own record of Fastest Death during a quicklook?

First room aside, he was pretty good throughout the rest of the video.

I'd almost say that the first room is part of an intentional running gag but that's not a conspiracy theory that I am willing to seriously consider :P

So people can be dismissive as hell about opinions they don't like by just going "you're playing it wrong!!!"? Hell no please don't.

It happend with Jeff Gerstmann's Quantum Break review and it was awful.

IT is better for movement too in fps since you use the mouse in combination with the 4 movement keys.

Plus you lose all movement just to switch a weapon in your scenario vs what happens with kb+m.

There are many genres where the gamepad is better choice + the couch factor as you mentioned.

Steam controller literally gives you both KB/M benefits AND the ability to circle strafe without recentering.

At the same time.

Valve should honestly release some footage of this game being played with the Steam controller. It feels so good and shows what that thing can do.

Yeah, I'd only be okay with that if the people that criticize the reviews all post their gameplay to supplement the review criticism as well. On a serious note: It's a level of transparency that would take an arseload of time and effort for almost no gains.

People: find individual reviewers that you trust* and follow their reviews.

*and when I say trust I don't mean agree. There are some reviewers that I disagree with often, but they are consistent enough that I can use their opinions to determine whether or not a game is for me. Find some reviewers that can depend on (even if you don't agree 100%) and follow them

It's a reviews outlet, not in-house marketing. They don't need to "show off" the game.

They dont need to show a game in its best light, but considering that the entire point of a videogame review is to inform the consumer then yes, they absolutely do need to show off the game.

Yeah I really gotta pick it back up again and get used to it.

It has a learning curve for sure, but I can't go back to any other controller now on my PC. My advise would be to enable the gyro while touching the right touch pad for fine tuning your aim and make sure you are using the trackball option. For Doom, I had jump on right grip and melee on left grip.

have you ever used a mouse and keyboard before? If you have, and that's the way you're using them, then, well that's on you. Nothing to do with the input method.

Fucking hell people, who cares? Only in the gaming community will we have a 22+ page thread complaining about a guy's playskill based on a single gif.

I guarantee you that I could go through any of your gameplay footage and find less than stellar gameplay.

I have several, super simple explanations for this;

  • It's just one enemy, who among us hasn't just lazilly tried to take out the last enemy in a room?
  • it surprised him
  • up close enemies are really annoying to deal with in FPS games
There is a long video of him playing the same way...

apparently the big red X on the map wasn't enough of a hint for that dude

...Is this for real?

See, this is why there should be a requisite skill requirement for writing reviews. Because someone was incapable of completing a rather simple action, the developers suffer.

You should at least have the skill of the average gamer. otherwise what's the point of the review?

Not really, KB/M is not comfortable at all. I can't play games long on PC with KB/M, comfort trumps all.

I think that's a sensible argument, but obviously also pretty subjective with different priorities. Saying that KB/M is trash compared to a controller is just non sense.

I just miss vibration when using keyboard and mouse. Shooting always feels more lackluster as a result to me.
