Some new info on Lightning Returns:FFXIII from Tokyo event

Here's a video showing the staff animation in motion.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PHR3yHgXRrk&t=7m45s

The staff casting animation seems a tad slower than the sword one, at least to my eye. Anyone have a different opinion?
Though I'm half-blind so I need a bigger image and more time to watch it, but... for the first weapon after the sword, it was slower than the sword. For the second weapon post-sword, it seems like the initial cast was slow, but then the subsequent casts were faster. The final cast, though, seems to be the slowest since it required an exaggerated animation. And it's not just for staves, but also for swords.

Also seems class-based. For the most part... I think it's L'ange noir? I can't read that, but it makes sense to me in terms of naming. Anyway, that class seems to be the fastest in terms of hand casts. Doing some extra reading says it enhances magic powers, so I'm not surprised. Seems like the weapon she uses is more lightweight than the one she uses in... uh... that default outfit whose name I can't see. Equilibrium?

Wonder how that Dark Muse costume works in terms of speed. And with that said, I wonder if the Cloud SOLDIER outfit will be slower than normal in terms of attack and cast speeds (ie: will that sword have weight or no). Lightweight outfits, though, might be a boon for speedrunners if that's the case.

Again, I really wish the picture were bigger because then I could see better.

Just rewatched the battle portions; here are some observations from me:

- I now think the staff casts are probably faster than the sword casts. The part where he casts Poison is much slower than when he's chain casting Fire or Lightning. Either Poison casts slower than Fire or, more likely, the guy was just slow at hitting buttons.
- The "combo finisher" animation is slower, but those hits seem to do more damage. Other hits randomly seem to do more damage too, (8:30) so maybe there's a crit system?
- In general, damage seems to randomly spike up and down. I can't find any obvious pattern...
- Lightning appears to do much less damage when she activates Overclock (the time slow). Of course, the enemies are helpless and she's attacking super quick, so this is probably balanced.
- I hadn't noticed this before, but when in Overclock mode there's a new option called Transformation. It costs 1 EP (Overclock costs 2 EP) and goes away once Overclock ends. Perhaps this is the Army of One-style attack that was in some of the trailers? Seems like kind of a weird name, but it could refer to her costume swapping during the attack...
- Around 3:35, he seems to Stagger a monster with a last second Block. There might be rewards for last second Blocking, similar to the parrying they've talked about. (Also, you can Block pretty quickly out of other animations, it looks like)
- Around 4:00, Lightning's wielding a much larger sword than normal. It looks to me like the animations are about the same speed as her normal sword, though.
- Defensive actions cost ATB, so you'll have to strike a balance between offense and defense (similar to Dark Souls stamina). That said, he's able to hit Evade the moment he swaps outfits, so in a pinch you can presumably swap clothes, cancel your animation, and perform a defensive action.

And just for fun, here's a screen grab of the spear from the video I posted on the last page. It's probably easier to get a clear view of it by watching the video.

Other than Toth, who seems to genuinely like the series, people like Perfo seem to be more interested in the perverted side of the game, overlapping fans of games like Neptunia. I am not so surprised.

I'm not interested in this type of stuff AT ALL (and I don't know where you got the idea from). That's not the reason why I'm looking forward to LR:FFXIII. It's all the rest that makes me especially interested: the graphics, (yes, graphics. With the term it includes of course art direction and general visual appeal), the music, the story (yes, I'm sorry. I'm interested in the story. So what?), the huge open world (a first in the offline series), the amount of freedom promised (go where you want, do what you want, break the game if you want, die and try again if you want, skip that part if you want, rush through it if you want), the amount of customization the protagonist got (first FF with visible equipments, first FF with su huge costumization of weaponry, armors, accessories, abilities ect.), the time-limit mechanics, the promised variety of gameplay (stealth sections, chases ect.), the scattered random dungeons/events ect. Even small stuff like: you can actually ride a train like in FF8 makes me super excited. I could go listing stuff I like in this game for hours.

In LR:FFXIII there's everything I need from a FF. Everything.

edit.

wait, there's just one thing I'm upset about it: random encounters (or better, change of setting for battles). That I do not like. But I like to think the engine stops them from having a smooth transitions into battles or else it wouldn't make any sense to keep doing this. Unless japanese players are really "fanboys" of that but I doubt...

Do I smell chocobo ranch thus chocobo breeding here?

edit. also nice touch adding a logo for each continent like Kingdom hearts. I wonder why Yusnaan got the "XIII" logo on it...

A12: I really like Moogles and Chocobos. How many kinds of each will there be?
A12: There will be some Chocobos you haven’t seen before! But we ask that you please wait for our follow-up report.

It'll be fun if they put it back :D

God the Wild Lands seem so beautiful, can't wait to explore them. It's also impressive to notice how boosted is the draw-distance this time, they're really pushing the engine to its limits.

Impossible enemies? Hell yessssss

It is true the Ligtning's Bust size increased from C cup to D cup in LR. Its done by Toriyama.
-There will be costumes that makes your bust size bigger or smaller.

Seriously - when did Final Fantasy become all about breast sizes? It was about the adventure beforehand I'm sure of it. XIII what did you do!?!

Virtual idols happened
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_idol

It's simply what otakus want in Japan right now.
Except that's a dead end road. While the otakus may want it, the general Japanese audience probably don't. Ask the people in the community anime thread and they will tell you why pandering to otakus isn't exactly a viable solution.

The good news is, SE has 15 in the works so they're not going to end up like that, but it's probably better if they reconsider their market. All this team has to do really is sell at least 80% of what 13-2 sold, but instead they're focusing on a small audience. Not a good idea.

Q1: I think that one of Lightning`s most attractive features is her armpit. Is there a costume that will show off this part of her when she does her victory pose?
A1: Something that shows off her armpit..? Well, there are some revealing sets of costumes. I’m sure you’ll enjoy those.

All right then.

Can we have arm pit hair please?

Yet it's still behind most other engines by a long shot. But hey, obviously you've found something that many of the rest of us aren't seeing, so whatever floats your boat.

Er.

Laying off some of the talk or concentration on Lightning's body or the fetishization of certain aspects of her body would likely be less of a deterrent for others to post in LR threads in a reasonable style. Just a hunch. It seems to give some people ammo to use against the premise of the game, or plain gives some people--like myself--pause prior to thinking of making a post.

The long and short of it is that perhaps it would be nicer if some scaled back for the sake of making LR threads be taken more seriously or for them to be a little more inviting for people to post in sans the vitriol, regardless of what the project lead has to say about certain aspects of the game.

Thanks. It was kind of hard to tell at some points, but upon re-watching, I think you're right with respect to staff/rod casts being faster than that of a sword cast. But since L'Ange Noir seems to enhance magical attacks, it might be faster than that of her default costume which seems to throw some weight behind attacks.

Not to mention that some spells have longer animation times than others, and poison has a tendency to animate longer than other spells. If you want to compare times, you should probably compare L'Ange Noir's cast time for Thunder with other costumes'/weapons' times for Thunder.

Combo finishers always took the longest to animate to throw in an extra animation for style, which is why it was usually best to cancel the attack on ATB and do something else (I usually mained Noel and Fang in the previous games, and they were remarkably similar in terms of having longer and irritating finishers that it was best to cancel). I imagine that it's similar here. And I imagine that it's going to be dependent on the weapon as well, since certain weapons will have longer finishers than others if the previous games were any indication.

Weird that damage seems to go up and down because... it should be chaining. Ah well, that's probably an older build, maybe? That just strikes me as odd, unless the player isn't consistently keeping up the attack in order to adequately chain.

Transformation doesn't really sound like an attack name to me, so it might be some sort of skill for her that either allows her to swap costumes or allows her to change into something else. Hm.

If you can block fast out of animating attacks, can you cancel an attack and go into a block/evade? That's something I'd always wondered, and it's something that I'd wanted.

I actually do think that the L'Ange Noir's sword works faster than her sword that she uses at 4:00. The animations for that bigger sword just seems slower to me, but it might be how the costume itself works. It's too bad they don't have a lot of stuff with more melee attacks in a string and constant costume switching because then it'd be easier to judge. The enemy they picked was one that you had to use magic against anyway, so maybe later on.

Dude come on. The first FF even did all this.

7: Why is Hope a young boy?
A7: As of now, thanks to the power of the gods Hope has been returned to the form of a young boy.
Q&A

OK...

Ridiculous story aside, the gameplay looks really fun. After declaring to never buy a FFXIII-related game after XIII-2, I may have to force myself to play this one.

Just a thought.
Has it been explained why they decided to not name the game XIII-3?
The collector/neat freak in me is already thinking about how the spines of all three games wont line up in a presentable fashion.....lol
And secondly is this the first 'main line' FF game not to feature Yoshitaka Amano's iconic logo illustration? I mean it's been a staple for the series and I was surprised when they revealed it, it will have a different logo/font presentation.

I'm no major FF fan but from what i'm seeing of LR...I'm growing to like it

1) They want to disassociate the game with FFXIII. They went through several names before deciding on 'Lightning Returns.'
2) This is not really a mainline game, and other prequels/sequels in the FF series have gone without an Amano logo like Dirge of Cerberus or Crisis Core.

What. Goddamn fans.

It's what part of the fandom has degenerated into. When nothing of import can be discussed it becomes fetish discussions on select parts of human anatomy in regards to female characters. And various other topics of non-interest. Or the occasional shipping war.

Power of lamefaqs.

I bet you have some weird fetish with Gilgamesh too. Dont lie to us Magius.

Laaaaame. You dont live up to your tag and fame then.

It says Fan Annoyance. Not GILGAMESH Bromance.

Though I do liken myself to Enkidu. So perhaps there is a chance to form an imaginary bond. A bond that only a great power can come of those who FIGHT LIKE MEN!

A bond forged in combat by way of the sword! COME! To battle! I wield the STRONGEST SWORD there is!

Hmm interesting. Surprising to hear that they want to disassociate it from FFXIII considering it's now part of a trilogy.
And you know what... I completely forgot about those two games. Crisis Core was pretty good.

I wish SE would make all sequels not include the Final Fantasy name in them.

FFX-2 should've been "Charlie's Angels".
FFXIII-2 should've been "Bonnie & Clyde".

I'm being facetious with the titles, but FF sequels have been pretty disappointing to say the least. Disassociating them with the mainline games would benefit them.

The female Selkies in Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles on Gamecube actually had jiggle physics.

Female Selkies were the bane of my young teenage self. I'm quite fond of the Selkie in the box art.

Can't forget about the dancing tambourine Selkie events.

Weird that damage seems to go up and down because... it should be chaining. Ah well, that's probably an older build, maybe? That just strikes me as odd, unless the player isn't consistently keeping up the attack in order to adequately chain.

Did they ever say that the new chaining system would work like the old one? Given that there's no obvious percent, I assumed that the pre-stagger damage bonus was just gone and enemies just took much more damage while staggered. Just an assumption, though.

The most egregious mystery damage numbers happen from 8:30-8:40. It might just be buggy or something, though.

Transformation doesn't really sound like an attack name to me, so it might be some sort of skill for her that either allows her to swap costumes or allows her to change into something else. Hm.

Maybe she can pull a Caius and transform into Odin...it would be fun to play the horse form... :P

If you can block fast out of animating attacks, can you cancel an attack and go into a block/evade? That's something I'd always wondered, and it's something that I'd wanted.

Judging by the stuff that goes down at 3:40 and 3:45, it looks almost like you can cancel into a block/evade.

I also just realized how many things are going on at 3:45. He casts Poison, cancels with an outfit shift, hits Thunder to trigger the jump back animation, cancels THAT into an Evade forward. There's definitely a Thunder -> Evade cancel there, so I'm guessing you can cancel into defensive moves! Wahoo!

I also hope the Evade directions are specified with the stick and not some weird automatic thing. They probably are. Rolling ninja combat incoming.

Another thing I noticed: There's a special effect that goes off if you block right before an attack initiates (very noticeable around 3:50). This probably explains the Stagger-initiating Block around 3:35. Giving bonuses for last minute Blocks definitely gives me hope that Square Enix really is going to make this game challenging and deep for those who want it.

Rudimentary stopwatch timing of the attack chain at 4:00 and the one at 8:50 had them at about the same time, to the best of my abilities.

Of course, the second one might be affected by the Overclock that ends a moment before (she definitely attacks much faster during Overclock). In addition, they have different finishers. Even if they are the same speed, different finishing animations should add bonus depth to weapon choice!

Unrelated thing I also noticed: Blocking drains ATB every second. Seems balanced, and rewards last-second blocking.

If this was a new IP and not Lightning/FF13 related, Gaf would be excited for this.

It doesn't look bad, just burnt out on this world/characters/story.

Looking at that gameplay footage. I must say her starting weapon the "Crimson Blade" has a dull and flat edge. It would make a poor cutting weapon and looks only viable as a bludgeoning weapon.

My thoughts in relation to the design of the weapon.

Toriyama isn't a Vagrant Story fan.

.

I said that in another FF13 thread a looooong time ago. FF13 has hurt the brand more than anything, I really feel like they should let it go, and move forward. To be honest, this one just seems... well, because we know Toriyama has this obsession with Lightning, it's marginally creepy to see him just go all out now.

So yeah, a new IP would be preferable, I think.

Today was the first night I slept and dreamt of Lightning. It involed certain GAFers (Perfo is the only one I remember though), along with Lightning, myself and lots of toilet visits.

Yeah, I have no idea wtf I was dreaming about but it was weird.

You are saying you've never shown fascination for Lightning?

Never. Saying I consider Lightning (XIII) one of the best character designs of the generation automatically implies I get horny by seeing her and thinking about her boobs? That's crazy. In not interested in her "sexualization" (if it's even there... I don't think a couple of extra fanservice-clothes changed her personality at all in any way, so for me she's still not quite sexualized as people are implying here).

The long and short of it is that perhaps it would be nicer if some scaled back for the sake of making LR threads be taken more seriously or for them to be a little more inviting for people to post in sans the vitriol, regardless of what the project lead has to say about certain aspects of the game.

This. Hopefully when the game comes out all this will end and only people playing (and enjoying) it will be talking in the topic.

I agree. The game got all the ingredients to make ANY S-E fan super excited and happy about it, but the inclusion of Lightning and Co. turns certain fans off. Luckily I like the XIII characters and stories so is not my problem :D but I must add that the game really sounds like a different title from the previous two so much that if Lightning wasn't there I would have difficulties calling it a sequel. Everyone should really give this game a chance when it comes out, just stop the hate.

The sword has been sapped of its power, thus broken, In some FMVs you can see the edge being different and spikey while in gameplay footage lacking the ending part of it.

And I like the gundam-design of her sword and shield. Her outfit and weapons are quite alot better than her XIII-2's stuff imo :)
