Some new info on Lightning Returns:FFXIII from Tokyo event

Someone was asking what Japan's reaction to this was, well here it is:

This is more interesting if true:

In this same Q&A, it was revealed that Toriyama told the team to "defeat Skyrim."

Awesome Toriyama is always awesome. Hopefully while failing in regards to sales he'll be able to create a more engaging open world game (not that difficult...). And generally speaking the latest Square Enix always acknowledging games from the west is something really, really good for their industry. Maybe without cRPG FF would've never went to open world universes like they're doing with LR and FFXV. Now all remains is doing that better and in japanese style. I can finally dream :D

As for boobs, FF and jRPG heroines are famous for big boobs (Tifa have them giant), so I don't see the problem. The current Lightning still features very small boobs, so much that without Mr. T. revealing the change, I always thought they were the same as XIII when I've seen her ingame model and CG images. This is a non-issue.

Please, kindly explain me what's so good about impossible enemies. Hard to beat is OK, impossible is just frustrating and no fun, no?

They're obviously not going to be impossible - it's just a way of saying that some enemies will be insanely hard. I believe if anything is frustrating in a game like this, grind/gear up a bit more and go for it again.

Didn't click on this thread soon enough.

Boob physics added? Not necessarily a bad thing (hey, women have breasts, and they can bounce).

But increasing the bust size of an established character... I don't think I'd have done that. :P makes the whole thing appear like a cynical tweak to attract male fans.

after hearing the last boss could be defeated in 50sec this statement is good. guuuuuuud gooooooooooooooooooooooood

edit: The following post includes spoilers from FFVI, VII, X, XII and XIII.

50 seconds is still longer than it takes to beat
Kefka
(ignoring the in-battle cutscenes),
Sephiroth
(One Winged Angel),
Jecht
(this fight could take you three seconds with break damage) and
Vayne
with maxed out gear/levels. Heck,
Orphan
could've potentially be killed in less than a minute.

You do understand that this is the case only if your characters are maxed or close to it. Majority of people don't grind, at least I think we don't.
That post was directed to heiyu though :). This one:

Oh OK, it makes sense now.

Actually I don't mind bosses that can be defeated fast but with using not obvious strategy, I got really disillusioned with long boss fights after FF12. Long fights are boring, especially samey fights.

I kinda don't like timed things, I wonder should I even buy Return of Lightning, nobody asked for.

How timed will the game really be though? I mean, can I get a game over if I stand AFK for hours?

you are quite right kind sir, however i had expressed myself pretty badly. since it was being told near impossible enemies would be bad i said it would be good after hearing the 50sec statement, HOWEVER it was the "combinatisizeon" of these two posts that made me say it:

-depending on how you customize your character, its possible to kill the last boss in 50 seconds.
-If you are not good at action, you can focus on defence stats and you will be able to beat the game without using the "defend/guard" command.

no matter how you look at that it spells easy mode all over it... at glance... i guess i am just afraid dear GAFfers after playing FFXIII-2. It's not that i didn't like the game but admit how many of you shouted after a lot of hours: "CHALLENGE WHERE ART THOU?"

That's really good question (><)

But c'mon, there is no challenge in FF13-2, they took it all out from FF13 and made FF13-2 from what was left.

From the last interviews I read it seems to me the time-mechanic is now alot less punishing than before, so much that they just claimed you can finishing everything on the first playthrough (minus post-end content of course). Yes, the game ends if you stand for hours without doing anything, but you can enjoy all the time you want simply by playing (playing (=fights, quests, story missions ect.)-> adding more time before the end of the world).

Ya can't. I remember reading that at the end of each day, you are forced to return to where Hope is and cough up that drug money the points used to extend the world's life.

Exactly. Every hour and twenty minutes more or less you get to meet Hope again, trade in your stuff, collect your rewards, extend the time of the world and then get back to the action. It sounds like a way to keep rewarding the player everytime, something XIII in my opinion managed really well giving a good sense of progression. I totally trust what the team is managing to do with this game, they really seem convinced they can push out a game as polished as XIII and as good as past Final Fantasy and at the same without relying on nostalgy or old mechanics to make it happen. It's their third and final game, probably their best by far. I really can't stop expressing my enthusiasm for this game, it's everything I wanted from the last FF on this current gen. ARR will just make it sweeter getting to it.

On another website I saw this translated as play testers have beat the last boss in 50 seconds with all the customization Lightning can have, so more tweaking is still needed.

Translations are a funny thing.

This sounds awesooooooome.

They just have to add fun to that, it can't be that hard.
and boobs might help too

You can spin out as much delusional hyperbole as you can possibly dream of, trying to convince others that this game is going to be critically acclaimed, and all the 'haters' will finally see the true genius of Toriyama's work, redact on their opinions and realise this game will take the series into hyperspace because of HOW GOOD it is.

Yeah. And Toriyama will turn into a chocolate Pegasus that pukes wishes, yawns backwards, changes Wednesdays into butterflies and lives in a magical forest.

The truth is Perfo, its people like you that are cheering on every batshit feature of FF, regardless of how insane it is, that are damaging the series for the vast majority of the fans. You send the wrong message to Square with your over the top fanboyism. Its no wonder they keep rolling out turd after turd if the loudest voices are the lunatic fringe yelling for bigger tits and armpit shots.

You seem like a genuinely nice guy, you seem to genuinely adore this series. And I don't mean to be an ass to you, you don't deserve it. But you know how a hug, however well intentioned, can suffocate someone? Yeah.

When it releases it will get panned. The hate for the series will only intensify. That is what will happen because SE have already passed the point of no return with this series as far as most are concerned. This trilogy will not recover any mindshare among FF fans, its gone past that. People have already decided. The best and only good thing that can happen at this point is that we get through the release of this game asap, and move onto the next installment of Final Fantasy, where, god willing, everyone can put this Lighting nonsense behind them (that NOBODY fucking wanted anyway) and move forward. Perhaps then we can actually look forward to playing a Final Fantasy game again. Because I remember getting excited for a Final Fantasy game, they were always red letter days. Now I dread them, because they're just the weird obsession of a nutcase.

totally agree btw

Take the glasses off junior, you don't see too well.

spirity, I think you need to calm down because I can feel that you're angry right now. Also, being harsh against heiyu just because he's a junior is quite childish.

Never. Saying I consider Lightning (XIII) one of the best character designs of the generation automatically implies I get horny by seeing her and thinking about her boobs? That's crazy. In not interested in her "sexualization" (if it's even there... I don't think a couple of extra fanservice-clothes changed her personality at all in any way, so for me she's still not quite sexualized as people are implying here).

FMMzvAz.gif

Other than the obvious cat girl costume that I don't need to point out (and I get that's a pose from XIV, it doesn't change anything, there are plenty of other poses they make).

Her main costume doesn't even have pants.

And of the 80 costumes, how many of them have we actually seen? I'm sure there will be a good chunk that focus on sexualization, especially as Toryiama pointed out that some have larger breast sizes and stuff. Plus that uber-sexual victory pose from an earlier video which I can't find now. It was rumoured it wouldn't make it into the final game, but the fact they put that in just to have it be there as they are working on it shows Toryiama's true colours even more.

I know you've been arguing on plenty of gameplay aspects being good too, so you may not be fully into the perverted stuff, but to pretend it doesn't exist is silly. You just don't want to admit that's what Toryiama is doing to your new favourite FF.

My problem with Lightning and FF13 is that Square really seems to "force" this particular installment and everything related to it onto fans.

It's not like with FF7 when the game itself was a phenomenon and Cloud spilled everywhere he could.

FF13 got extremely mixed response, probably bigger than FF12.

Did we really need two sequels to FF13?

Still I can't completely say SE lost it as I absolutely loved demo of Type-0, so I guess they still have what it takes.

PS.Sazh is the best thing in FF13.

fuck, i think i might just gamefly this. Still won't finish 13, or get 13-2 though.

Trying to understand things is gonna be fun.
If there is one thing that i really enjoyed in both games it was the battle system,if you can get them cheap give them a try if only for the customization and the different paradigms

What is I assume to be optional and on a spin-off handheld final fantasy, versus the main character you see all the time in a main FF iteration, is quite different.

Mainline actually. What is it a spinoff of? Name one mainline title that takes place on Orience. There isn't. Since it's handheld it is written off as a spinoff.

Then again. Most cling to their Roman numeral philosophy of what dictates a mainline entry so eh.

Well usually any games in a series without numbers are spin-offs, it's not really meant to be insulting. FF Tactics is a spin-off and it's pretty awesome.

Like SMT wise, outside of SMT 1 & 2, Nocturne and now SMT4, the rest are spin-offs, Persona is a spin-off, Digital Devil Saga is a spin-off, etc.

Long as it's a series with numbered entries, non-numbered entries are spin-offs, at least to me (less they start to remove numbers, like Call of Duty). Still my main point was that it's optional and you don't stare at a character like that throughout the course of the game, while you do for lightning.

I will just leave this here: (credits to Hawkeye@http://thelifestream.net/)

The reported quote we've been seeing is this:

"Yes, her chest jiggles. Since everyone can decide what costume she’ll wear, you can make sure it does (laughs). By the way, since Lightning swings her arm when you change her weapon in the menu screen, that’s a recommended action for sure-fire jiggling! To see it even better, it could be useful to equip a small shield. Look forward to it!"

The only parts actually in quotation marks from the original article are "Yes, her chest jiggles" (「胸は揺れます」) and "Since everyone can decide what costume she’ll wear, you can make sure it does" (「個々の衣装によって設定が微妙に違ったりしますので、よく確認していただければ（笑）」), but I think that second sentence wasn't quite translated properly. It should be something more like, "Her configuration changes with each outfit, if you check often (laughs)."

The rest of the purported quote was actually just editorializing by the author of the Dengeki Online article, but got picked up for the translation and attributed as part of the quote.

By the way, it was Nobuhiro Goto (the character modeling designer) who was quoted here. I think the impression had gotten around that it was Toriyama who said this part.

Anyway, the "equip a small shield so you can see it better" and "look forward to it!" quotes weren't from the dev team. Still, Goto was arguably using the whole thing to promote the game with the "check often" quote that he actually did say, and there's no doubt that stuff like the full-page spread Splintered talked about has been.

I see. Then I apologize for my previous belligerence.

Director is responsible for what is in a game, everything terrible or out of place is his fault. Given the initial LR reveal and his creepy antics and how he talks about Lightning, you can be sure anything perverted to do with her is something he supports greatly.

Which really means "we pasted her face on another character model but couldn't be bothered to modify the proportions"
Actually, it's more likely that what they did was create a "Universal Man" (in this case, a "Universal Lightning") where it's just the base model with limbs and body proportions. As each costume design is finalized, the modeler will just start with the universal man and adjust proportions from there.

Which really means they actually increased/decreased her boob size depending on what they felt X costume design should be catering to.

A FF game with boob physics? What abomination is this?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=08M8J7XF1vM

Ahah, well played sir. This should shut up many people here :)

Plus without even going that further distant from FF... but MGS features this type of stuff from centuries and no one ever said anything about it. Whining just because this is a XIII game. Call if with a different name and... you could witness silent or maybe even interest from these same players. Wow.
