Someone is restoring Superman (1978) and it's quite good

KyoZz

Tag, you're it.
Only a few scenes are available for now, but I find the result at least interesting:

Some direct exemple:

Why? WB did a 4K remaster and it's great.

It doesn't mean the 4K BR is not great, it's a fan project and she probably use this to improve skills and show what she can do.
Also their is quite a few tweak that look good imo.

New effects and it adds scenes from the 3 hour TV version

WB also released that version via Warner Archive.

And adding new effects isn't a "restoration".

Funny how people killed George Lucas for that, but it's fine for fan edits to do it in the name of "restoration".

You can't just enjoy things ?
Or if you don't just let it go ?

Hype Train conductor. Works harder than it steams.
Yeah fans do this all the time, I've seen movies Remastered in 4k even though it's already available in 4k and all they've done is used heavy NR to remove film grain and AI Upscale it and make it look waxy, yet they claim it's better then the Studio Remaster

not tag worthy
Either this gets slapped down or WB use this to profit and the person doing this gets a some new money and work. The superman 2 Richard donner cut should be next.

It's a fan edit. It's not a restoration if they're making new effects. At least call it what it is.
Whatever makes you feel better, I really don't have time to waist with you.

That's just a fan project, relax...

It's funny when people complain about DNR on official Blu-Rays but then do it themselves in a fan edit and think it's great.

Guess they are not the same people, mystery is solved !
And it's not fully black or white, sometimes studios make a great job (like LOTR).

let it go GIF

The Superman Blu-Ray and 4K doesn't have DNR. In fact the 4K was praised for retaining the film grain. It's the best the movie has looked since it was in theaters as the 4K scan of the original negative brought out detail that wasn't seen on previous home video releases.

The movie was made in 1978 and filmed on 35MM with Panavision anamorphic. It's always supposed to have grain and removing that is wrong.

It's a FAN PROJECT
It wont take anything from you, you'll be fine I promise !
"Removing that is wrong" Wow you really feel like: "If it's not like I WANT IT TO BE, it's shit"

Now go, nitpick something to keep doing your thing, if you are funny enough I might response again.

That's not it. Changing a movie from the way the filmmaker intended it to be is wrong and no fan with a YouTube channel gets to decide how a movie should be changed.

That's why those Star Wars "definitive editions" are completely and totally stupid. They came from a fan who blasted the Special Editions and the changes George Lucas made to his movies, but then went and added a whole bunch of new effects to claim them to be the "definitive" editions.

I like the idea of fixing shots in Superman because it hasn't aged well at all, but some of the artistic changes actually look worse (the shot of the plane and outside the Fortress of Solitude for example).

(As a side note funny how George Lucas was heavily criticized for adding special effects to his films yet so many fan edits of Star Wars have additional CGI shots added in making the film clearly worse EDIT: just saw the comment above hahah)

Yea they're all like "Fuck George Lucas and him raping my childhood with new effects!", and then "Look! I added more ships to the Battle of Yavin!!!!!"

Bahahaha, those Yavin shots were literally the first thing I thought of.

EDIT:

For reference (The Adywan scenes):

Interesting. But things like "camera distortion correction" and changing the way effects were done, I can't go for that.

To me, the ultimate "Restoration" is one that preserves a film as closely as possible to it's original theatrical release. Same color grading. Same visual effect "problems". I want the original think in as high res as possible, basically.

George Lucas, I think he gets a pass, simply because he has always been an experimental filmmaker, and those were essentially Indie Movie projects, self-funded by his own companies, in order to experiment with then-new CGI technology. This is technology he himself had helped to create, by founding Pixar as well as ILM and other visual effects companies.

To me they almost serve the same role as the Beatles Anthology and other music compilations where the artist might go back and add new vocals to an older song or something. Hank William Jr. singing on his father's songs with new instrumental overdubs. This is a thing that had been done in music for a while. It just hadn't been done in movies before until George self-funded it. Dude was constantly reinventing and experimenting with film.

Then get the 4K UHD disc. It was made from a new 4K scan of the original negative and it's gorgeous.

People dislike Lucas for that because those newest versions are the only way to buy the original trilogy now.

Except when they add a bunch of new effects to their "definitive edition" fan edit they aren't the original trilogy anymore and it defeats the whole purpose.

I agree. The only difference is the fan edits, while I might not have any interest in them personally, don't take the place of the original versions. I think it's fine that Lucas revisited the original trilogy. I just wish it was only one of several options people had.

KyoZz KyoZz there are some users on this forum that will argue you to death. Realize it early on and don't let them get under your skin.

Can't say i like some of these edits. The video with Clark and his father looks like they added a piss filter.

When you dopes are done arguing over nothing, some of you will be happy to hear it's out already and has been for a while. You can watch it online here . Remove /preview from the end of the URL to get to a download link for Google Drive. I also found a torrent here for a version that's larger in file size, but still appears to be 1080p.

Not a big fan of the edits and changes - the re-made ice shot set extensions, for example, just doesn't work with the tone of the other scenes. With the said, it's an impressive piece of individual work; girl's got skills, no question.
