Square Enix Considering Xbox 2 Development
07.04.04 - 3:21 AM

Square Enix's director of corporate planning Michiro Sasaki
has mentioned that his company was looking into supporting
Microsoft's second hardware platform, which is currently
scheduled to launch in late 2005. However, he did not provide
any details regarding the decision making progress. Microsoft
has attempted to lure Japanese publishers such as Square Enix
to their platform for years, to develop Xbox-exclusive titles,
with very little success.

Do you think there are progress on the matter ?

Maybe at best 1 or 2 games, but it is still a safe bet that the Squinx will still have its head buried deep into Sony's ass during the next generation.

nintendo too :) u can quote :p

I'm not too sure, it could go either way, if SE was on board maybe MS would not have signed on MistWalker. I think it all really depends on how popular X360 is in Japan.

probably as first Xbox :/

They're a top 10 eastern PC dev/producer. Probably top 3 with Enix merger. They'll probably share their PC development support with the X360. If that means late ports of few FF gams, so be it (Keep in mind that many FFs have not hit the PC, like FF9 and, more importantly, FF6)

Personally, unless we see a catastrophic failure on either MS' or Ninty's part this coming gen, I'm betting on SE to be releasing titles on all the platforms. Perhaps, not all of their franchises will be represented across the board, but I would think that a majority will. SE wants to compete with EA and Konami, and so I feel it's pretty logical to see a more multiplatform approach for them.

SE is not on the Xbox 360 publisher list.
You think MS has a surprise unveiling for "SE joining Xbox" at E3? No, EA would be pissed if that's the case.

Man, E3 can't come soon enough:(
Give me a real new Seiken game, with Kikuta doing the music and I'll be in heaven. Oh, and a new Chrono game please.

sure but I say "more than actually" ^^

So you're suggesting that Square Enix will back Nintendo more heavily than Sony in the future?

If you're talking in terms of the sheer volume of the content, I'd almost be inclined to believe you (with GBA and DS being less draining of resources, plus Revolution in the pipeline). I don't see why they'd move the bulk of their stationary console efforts to Nintendo though, seeing as how they've got a pretty good business model going on right now.

Can you hear that? Shhh. Shhhhhhh. Hush now. It's that rumble. The crack and sway of the Earth moving beneath your feet. It is happening, in nine days.

All your questions, answered. And a shockwave.

why wouldn't you have both Mistwalker and SE if you are trying to make a name for yourself in Japan? One works only for you, and the other makes only bad FF spin offs...

If it was the Square prior to this generation I'd consider it to be big news for me. But I've not been impressed with anything Square has done this entire generation. They still have some time though with FFXII for this generation.

I tend to agree with this..

Politically it would be very very difficult in Japan given the history of the people involved.

Needs some anagrams.

My wild speculation: They probably had talks with Sakaguchi about publishing Mistwalker's games and Sak told them he was making them for the 360. Square probably saw it as a low cost/high reward option for showing MS some support, but then MS cut out the middle man by funding and publishing Sakaguchi themselves.

Eh, no. There are no corporate ties between Sakaguchi and SE and likely never will be given what happened. And don't believe Sakaguchi ever planned to developed for X360 on his own... :)

Well, then, like I said... are you including handheld games in this hypothetical lineup? :D

'Cause then I could believe you... IF you had hinted towards something, that is. :D

Prolly not, hence the "wild speculation" part. :)

Hey, was Tail Concerto that game with the boy in the big robot suit? That game was pretty fun.

Careful...Sp0ng will use you as a source... :lol

All are likely at E3, imo:

Square Enix with 1 title for 360.
GTA Next on 360 (timed exclusive?)
One more big 360 announcement.

I'd be real damn surprised if that happened. San Andreas as an updated version, maybe, but Sony and Rockstar/Take 2 have a really strong relationship, and Sony has always beat MS and Nintendo to the punch when it comes to locking up the big exclusives from 3rd parties. If Sony isn't announcing the next GTA as a PS3 exclusive at this E3 I'll be a little surprised myself.

maybe square will TEST the market with xbox360 to see if FFXII will sell.... if so they go multi-platform(ala EA)
Why with FFXII though? That'd seem like a poor choice to me. Either they'd straight port, where it'd sell like absolute shit, or they'd update it and tons of Square fanboys would go after it in droves. The only way it could be a clear indicator of the userbase is if they update it and no one buys it, so its only quantitative as a negative test, not worth the time I'd say.

Getting MS to fund a new IP for the system is their best bet I'd say. See if there really is a market for their style of RPGs on the system with a title that isn't relying on a franchise name to sell. Thats the only way to get a clear reading on the userbase's willingness to support future Square Enix titles.

I think it's possible they might release 1 or 2 games on the Xbox 360 within the first 2 years, have them bomb, and not bother again until the Xbox 720 or whatever.

At least one of those is HORRIBLY WRONG. May I suggest you not to make any more predictions? :)

No.

Or... they might get something like The Bouncer/Breakdown, which will bomb hard, and after that it's bye bye MS!

If you've followed Izzy's others posts you know exactly which one that is too. Makes me quite happy. :)

UKer or Japaneer?

I'm pretty sure Sony have sent trucks full of cash to Take 2's headquarters, is this prediction correct? :D

These are all likely at E3, imo, as well:

A resurrection (no pun intended) of Bible Adventure games on 360.
Kid Icarus on 360 (timed exclusive)
Barbed Wire: Fully Loaded for 360 (w/Pamela Anderson VA)
FFXIII-VIV on 360, plus Tom Sawyer Square-Enix remake.

I like this funny little fantasy world!
