Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed |OT| Everybody's Super Sonic Racing

This not being on Steam yet is driving me to waste money on the first game that I should be saving for Transformed! Not that the first game would be a waste of money--I just know I'm going to want it as soon as it's available regardless if I'm finished playing the first one or not.

They're different enough that it's worth having both around, I think. I played the first one again with my sister yesterday and my experience wasn't spoiled... though I did forget how to drift properly in the first one for a few races.

impressions from a friend of mine whos beaten games like dark souls and other hard games, i just found them amusing, i mean they are expected since he doesn't play racing games very much, but it made me laugh

"game is hard as fuck lmfao i struggle to do well on medium let alone hard so much fun though"

Love that it feels different from the first, but is still fun as hell. I drifting takes more skill (me and my buds would drift spam like crazy in the first one, there was almost never a time we weren't drifting lol), and it really changes how you play the game. Drift boost feel more satifying and rewarding as a result. The track being dynamic is cool shit too, anyone know if the retail PS3 version runs well?

I can see myself going back to the original on occasion; that and Transformed are so different from each other.

Speaking of drifting, I'm glad that the drifting trick for the original was abolished in Transformed. In the original, it was possible use both the left stick and the D-pad simultaneously, and the effect on your steering "stacked". For example, if you pushed both to the right, you'd turn right at a far sharper angle than if you just used one. This allowed you to drift anywhere, even if you were on straights, as you could begin a drift in one direction, and push the D-pad in the other, so you would actually be maintaining a straight line.

You had to use this trick to stand any chance when playing online. It didn't bother me much, as I could do it well, but you have to hold your controller really weird in order to do it (I personally reached my right thumb over to the D-pad, but this meant I had to reach back whenever I wanted to use a weapon.

I'm no scientist, but it feels like a solid 30. Only time I've really noticed any dips was when there were 3 or 4 splashdowns in the Monkey Ball track, the waves looked a bit choppy.

Probably a fluke, though.

I just played Roulette Road (the Sonic Heroes casino level from the original), and it's my first criticism with Transformed; this stage doesn't suit the Transformed drifting mechanics AT ALL. You can't drift at all for the first half of each lap, as the turns are really gentle. And at the final two long turns, where you can easily get a Level 3 drift, it's hard to end the drift and activate the boost after the first turn, as since you need to quickly go from drifing from the left to the right, it's all too easy for your character to "save" their drift boost.

It's kind of hard to explain, but hopefully anybody who has played this stage knows what I mean.

Even before actually playing this stage, I questioned it's inclusion (do we really need two of the four classic tracks to be Sonic ones?), but this doesn't help. Oh well.

lol wtf is going on here.

EDIT: The actual NiGHTS into Dreams game is lots of fun with a great soundtrack. I dunno why they couldn't figure out a better way to incorporate it in the game. I said this earlier, but it would have been better if they went with it's Sega Saturn forms for air, land, and sea. No driver, normal NiGHTS just flying (hovering) for land, rocket spin attack form for air, and dolphin tail form for sea.

Simple and effective.

Yeah even though she is the car from one of her other games she really should have been herself using a vehicle, at least the evil one looks reasonable lol, shes there to troll fully.

I thought it had no gender, or do people just refer to Nights as a she these days?

find out NiGHTS gender from the great Iizuka-san

SEGANerds: Why did you decide to give NiGHTS a voice? And why did you choose a female voice?

Takashi Iizuka: [LAUGHS] Well the original game had voice clips for NiGHTS, but in Journey of Dreams I wanted to use more voice acting. The voice helps to add depth to the game play, and tell the story in the cut scenes.

NiGHTS is neutral, and therefore has no gender. The impressions of the character with regards to gender are totally up to the player.

I've got a sore throat thanks to the Golden Axe ring flight challenge, bugger me can the collision detection be awful at times in this game at times, getting through the rings on time wasn't so tricky, I had to watch out more for my wings clipping such objects like a flaming torched placed within one of the rings you have to fly through.
When I was finally about to succeed I got snagged in the tree by the last ring and was actually stuck there for a full 5 seconds, I even tried to use my boost to free myself but I was just eating bark, after finally escaping the twiggy trap I had two seconds left with the goal right in front of me, of course I didn't make it.
Well i've done it now at least but the wonky collision is becoming a sore spot, the JSR stage which reminds me of Motorstorm Apocalypse's roof top jumping antics also suffers from the same problem that game occasionally did with some unclear pathways and the jumpy nature of the track going at odds with the idea you may get hit by a weapon right near the edge, or you take the jumps not perfectly straight causing you to get caught on a bit of wall and slowly slide down into oblivion, key problem here is slowly, if you just dropped like a ton of bricks it wouldn't be so bad.

The missions with the Tank boss can have some questionable hit detection on the final attack pattern with the shields, as well as the game throwing you into situations where you can't see the projectiles coming.

To jolly up this post a bit i'll say that the Golden Axe stage is really jumping up my list, it's like DKR's hot top volcano on crack.

Yeah this is very annoying for me too. Well, for the gf anyway. She hates using the shoulder buttons and would always change it.

This, plus the difficulty comments...I'm starting to doubt whether this will replace the original as our go-to game.

NiGHTS has always been a shapeshifter though. S/he transforms into a vehicle in every NiGHTS game, so this isn't that far-fetched.

But it does make it a lot more satisfying to get an All-Star with shim and Reala and watch them go all true form on those sorry assholes who thought to pass you.

Yeah but the NiGHTS vehicle stuff brings back bad memories of a bad game

Reala in kart form actually looks pretty cool. Nights tho... yeah creepy haha.

I felt bad playing online. I won every race and a few times no one else got to finish that's how far ahead I was.

What the hell

I was about to finish Sanctuary Falls (second or third cup) in 1st, then SUDDENLY, VYSE COMES FLIPPING THE FUCK OUT OF NOWHERE AT UNIMAGINABLE SPEEDS

It was amazing until I realized he beat me by 0.002 seconds.

We tied for points but that win put him in 1st.

MORAL OF THE STORY: You know you're playing a good game when it makes you rage and you still want more.
That or you're a masochist, and arguably, I am, but uhh...

Even when the game cheeses you it has that uncanny just one more event/race/GP feel to it, I just love how the cars handle and the sense of speed you can get.
Plus a list of messages flying out on the screen telling me how awesome I am for blind firing a rocket backwards into a long shot hit while level 3 drifting towards a transformation jump that has me twisting in the wind like a vehicular gymnast, so yeah it's compelling like that.
I've got to try and get a better handle on the planes near risk boost, it might boost up their overall appeal.

Yes, you are absolutely right about that. The game does a good job of challenging you without being discouragingly hard. And it has no problems telling you when you're being a badass driver.

I have never pulled off a Risky Boost or Reckless Boost or any of that. Only cool thing I've done in the plane is juke the hell out of projectiles and backflip into a car.

Ugh this is such a disappointment to me.... After Blur I didn't think I'd be unfortunate to come across such an annoying 'luck and bullshit' racer, but my god this is it and it really pains me to say it. It feels like a step back from the original, underwhelming graphics, annoying A.I and just an overall feeling of meh when it comes to the controls. I enjoyed the original immensely, I don't quite understand why this one seems crap, its easy to point the finger at all the transforming crap but it's not just that.. It feels a lot less kart racer now and each race is just a case of going through the motions as opposed to the intense kart racing feeling I got in the prequel.

The music on the other hand, is absolutely brilliant. Seriously one of the best sound tracks ever. With this and Sonic Generations providing some awesome remixes lately, it just shows that it's so much better to remix older stuff and bring something different to the table instead of just reusing the old music exactly as it was.

I can't believe
Segata Sanshiro
is in as a cameo, but not as a playable character. The fact that he's in the game means that copyright can't be an issue, and he definitely has enough of a cult following to warrant it.

I pray he makes it in as DLC, but I'm afraid that his cameo will hurt the chances of that.

The fact that he's already riding a rocket-type thingy only improves his chances, I think.
