Sonic Generations |OT| What Sonic can learn from Sonic

Classic Sonic's physics are a bit better but they're still nothing like the original.

Why the hell do you lose speed when rolling down a hill!? Makes no goddamn sense! You still have plenty of physics cheats and invisible nudges as well at certain points as well, and the gravity is far too strong, with no variable height bouncing.

This is not Mega Drive Sonic. It may be better than anything Sega have done since the MD days, but it's still not even close. A shame.

The level design is not bad though, based on what I've seen and played (I played Classic City Escape at Eurogamer Expo)

Modern Sonic is a non factor for me. It may be better than what has come before (I noticed how there are a lot more branching paths than before and it's nowhere near as glitchy) but it's still boring as hell to play.

Eh I don't find twitchy split second gameplay to really be BORING. o.o Try to get under 2 minutes? As much as I love the classic sonic games, and as much as I enjoy the classic sonic. Classic is way more simplier, plus they made him way to fast now for how small his stages are. Finishing a stage in near 1:30 secs with minimum inputs is closer to boring that all the stuff you gotta do for modern.

Different opinions and such xD

Is the ps3's version side by side 3d like the 360's?

Spent the past half hour comparing, making sure each tv channel was set to same colour settings etc... The 360 version is far superior in image quality to my eyes

Though both versions run really smooth so there is no performance difference between platform

Red rings, challenges after completing each stage (10 missions per stage or something like that) so there is plenty to do.

Or did you mean multiple routes?

the resolution is really low on the PS3 version, can't vouch for the 360 demo. that's why everything looks blurry, it's horrible and was the same with the last demo.

I don't notice anything wrong with the PS3 version besides the huge framerate drop when smashing through the bridge, but that's only like 1 second.

The 360 version does look like it has better textures and a bit better framerate (and i seriously mean just a bit, the only part where the framerate goes down on PS3 is the bridge smashing). It's nothing like Sonic Unleashed PS3 was, that was fluctuating mess of switching between 30 FPS and 60 FPS so randomly. PS3 Generations is locked at a solid 30.

Obviously if you got a 360 go for the 360 version, but if you'd rather get the PS3 version or if you only own a PS3 then don't worry, the game is good on the PS3, too =)

Well, this has shaped up alright. There are still a few things I'm not happy with however:

I still feel I have to hammer down on the jump button during modern Sonic which makes it feel unresponsive.

The dash system kinda sucks. I'm not entirely sure why Modern Sonic even has enemies.

Classic Sonic; as soon as you speed up someone might as well just vomit skittles in their hands and rub it into my eyes, and I'd still be able to see more of what's going on then I could in the game.

Oh and the stage selection still sucks. I don't think daytime city, nighttime city, ruined city, and slightly Greek city is much of a difference to me.

Played both acts in the demo. The controls for modern Sonic are as tight as they've ever been, turning, jumping and homing are all a lot snappier and more reliable. Most importantly it still feels that way when you aren't boosting, important for my first few runs through a level, when trying to nail the alternate path transfer's for the first time. I had a total blast when I was playing as modern Sonic, and I can't wait for that game-play to be expanded upon and put to the test with more challenging platforming later on in the game. Also, no wisps so S ranking is meaningful again!

So that's good to know, but my main concern was always how classic Sonic would turn out. I've been a cautious about the classic gameplay since I played the initial demo and was left massively disappointed. Well, when I played the newer demo I was happy to find that it had improved a lot, unfortunately still not at the level of actual classic Sonic controls. The jumping doesn't feel latent anymore, but there's still not quite enough air control, it's not as effortless to bop across several enemies. Sonic still takes a bit too long to get going, but it's a real improvement over the initial demo. I feel like I can at least be okay with this.

Booted up XBLA Sonic 1 right after playing the classic stage a couple of times, just as an immediate comparison thing. Yeah, it's like night and day. I kinda wish they had more time to get it down better in Generations. But I'm okay with the improvements they've made.

Yeah, the PS3 port is really good this time. I couldn't really spot any differences simply playing the two demos back to back (though I'm sure they are there is you look closely), but they both run at a solid 30 fps and both look great. Yeah, I'd love 60 fps, but it still looks great even at 30 fps.

I honestly don't have high hopes for the PC version either. Would love to see a smooth 60 fps, but I have a nagging feeling that it's going to be a low quality port that struggles to run smoothly on even high-end hardware.

Yeah, it still isn't quite perfect, but it's the best Sega has done in the past 15 years. There isn't a single other Sonic game post Sonic and Knuckles that controls this well. It's not Genesis Sonic, but it's still very snappy and reliable. Infinitely better than every other 3D Sonic to date, that's for sure.

You can see in one of the previous posts that the developer that's doing the PC version also did the PC version of Virtua Tennis 4, which while lacking in the graphics options department could run at 30fps on a shitty Intel GMA (which is under the minimum system requirements (Geforce 7800GT or Radeon X1800)): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pWi9hluv6aE

Virtua Tennis 4 isn't powered by the Hedgehog Engine ;) we have no idea how Hedgehog Engine acts on PC. Shouldn't try and pretend it will run on low power PC's when it probably won't. Best wait till the game comes out and see for ourselves.

Anyways, found another great video of a guy being blown away by Green Hill Zone Act 2. xD. I really like these videos for some reason, I guess because it reminds me that the people who don't like this game are the minority and that Generations will be a great success for SEGA.

Was it related at all to previous Virtua Tennis ports? The PC port of VT2009, for instance, was an absolutely joke. While totally playable, it never ran at a proper smooth 60 fps. It was full of weird performance issues and other problems. One of the worst PC ports I've seen in years.

In fact just about EVERY PC port from a Sega game like this has been rather lousy. I can't think of a single positive example.

I must have completely missed the boat but having heard demo discussion I jumped on PSN after being absent from PSN all week and saw no such demo. What is this demo you guys are speaking of, thanks.

On PSN the demo is only up for Europe. US will get it next week. (though you can use/create an alternate European account to download it now)

Yeah, It's kind of a bummer they didn't get it all the way there, but I can live with that. The Modern style really shines, can't wait to play more of it. I really hope there's a lot of good 3D platforming in the Modern style. (I've been told there are some good videos of that, but I don't want to watch too much)

The VT2009 port was handled by a different company, the VT4 port was handled by Devil's Details, who apparently is also porting Sonic Generations for the PC.

That wasn't the point of the comparison with VT4. The point in comparing Generations to VT4 is that both ports are handled by the same company, and since that company exaggerated the requirements for VT4, there's a possibility that they might be exaggerating the requirements for Generations.
It's obvious that Generation will require better hardware than VT4 though.

How was the quality of the actual port, though? That's the main question.

While it may have been a different company, VT2009 *ran* at a playable framerate on most hardware. The issue was that the fluidity was sacrificed and it appeared to skip frames even when fraps reported 60 fps. It was rather ugly in motion.

There's a difference between playable and smooth.

I don't have neither of them, so I have no idea how they compare with each other, but from what others say, it's a rather decent port (other than the save corruption issues, which can be blamed on using GFWL).

This seems to be a good port, just don't expect any PC enhancements of any kind bar higher resolutions (the console versions only run at 720p) and better anti-aliasing. Even the replays are still locked at 30 fps with the game switching to 60 fps. It runs flawlessly on my setup but then the most it taxes the GPU is 12% during the replays; in game it's 8% usage. I think Firefox's 2D acceleration stresses my GTX 580 more!!! ;)
Jut got it, not to bad at all, not sure about the world tour setup but i can't complain to much as it's pretty cheap.

@ Darren, yeah i noticed the GPU usage after i stopped playing, i saw my temp was very low so i opened up afterburner for a look and it was 6% usage during gameplay and 11% during replays, not bad to 1080p, 8aa and SM3 :D, bet my GPU was thinking "the hell is this?!" lol.
Hoping it doesn't have the random issue were the framerate randomly looks like it drops to about 20fps, even though its still at 60.
no it runs fine except for 30fps replay lock, i remember that weird glitch in 3 and its fine now by 4.

Hmm I think I am not well. I enjoyed modern more than retro in the demo. Still the same problem with retro I had in demo 1. can't really see what's going on for some reason. I can't put my finger on it. It either too blurry or close or quick. Maybe all of the above.

This is my take on it. Some of the smaller issues are still there, like using momentum to propel yourself from an incline--which would make fighting the usual casino boss a nightmare--- but he's not in there, and the game controls great otherwise.

Thanks for the info, this is good news. I bought Unleashed on 360 but was thinking about buying this on PS3 so its good to know. The game looks to be a winner hopefully this is a huge success for Sega (btw Sega I will double dip for a Vita version, just throwin it out there ;) ).

Got my best time on modern yet at 1:56. Found yet ANOTHER alternate path. This time way up above. Instead of doing that wall jumping section a grinded past it, and the rail sets you right back on the same path but in a slightly shorter amount of time.

I...I like modern Sonic better than classic in this demo. There! I said it! (If I was on Sonic retro, I'd probably get stoned to death. XD)

Something was wrong with modern Sonic's music.

This is my fault but I found myself using the stick when it was in 3D amd switching to the D-pad when the perspective switched to side view. I was like wtf. Anyone else do this?

I will have to get used to the modern levels and I know classic isn't 1:1 with the Genesis versions, but it's close enough for me. The only thing that I didn't care for was that little blue ice cream kept following me around all up on Sonic's ass and was really annoying.

Wasn't that pretty much his first time playing Modern Sonic since the Dreamcast era? That's picking a pretty bad source to judge from.

Not talking about his way of playing it, but rather how i found the footage myself.

All I'm going to say is, have you played both acts in the demo?

Actually i did now from yesterday to today, and yup, its still clunky as hell and feels more like playing some kind of memorizing QTE game than a proper 3D platformer. Game gives you so much visual flare and shit that you feel like youre doing something cool where in reality you're barely pressing any buttons and playing. Then you're suddenly stopped from all of that by hitting a wall or missing a huge button prompt and your "flow" completely stops and youre left with the weird and slow physics until you can get some speed again (like in the bad parts of 2D Sonic, only this time it happens more).

not my thing!

BTW how many acts does each stage have? I thought it was 2 for Classic and 2 for Modern?

1 act and 5 missions for each sonic per zone.

so 2 acts and 10 missions per zone. i don't know if that includes the rival battles or not.

Oh, I missed that there's a PC version after all. Are there already impressions whether or not it's a good port?

Apologies if this has been asked before and I'm not trying to troll.

Just tried the demo on my PS3 and woah... what is with the framerate? It legitimately hurts my eyes. It's so juddery and harsh. I mean, the original Sonics from the MegaDrive Collection don't have this effect.

What gives? Is the PS3 version simply really poor? I should clarify I'm talking about the 2D classic mode by the way.

My wait for a decent new Sonic game continues :-(

So do I. :p

Particularly during the 2D platforming segments as due to the scale of the environments in this level relative to Sonic, the homing attack somewhat enhances the gameplay and makes it flow better. Perhaps when Classic Sonic gets his shield skills, maybe then both Sonics will be on equal footing.

Maybe more time to work on the game?

Either way, happy to finally know where to allocate the money. Very happy about to take another handheld Sonic game with me on-the-go.

More likely Nintendo is doing the manufacturing and the production queue is too full for an early November release.

You could always get the 360 version if you have the system. ...Or get the PC version if you have a powerful computer.

Played the demo earlier. This game is loaded with that classic Sonic magic, almost brings a tear to my eye. ;) Also, modern Sonic's level rocks. More than classic IMO. But I love both. :)
