Sonic Generations |OT| What Sonic can learn from Sonic

There's no way Resaurus Sonic comes close to that cake.

Where'd you get the one on the right? It looks pretty cool.

The one on the left... Talk about a boner killer.

It's the Comic-Con Flocked Sonic, which means he's fuzzy. Toys'R'Us took months to put them up on their site (when I finally got to order one and got it in the mail, the figure box was dusty!).

I'd recommend it, it's super-posable and looks great. The legs have a tendency to want to bend backwards just a little bit, but not badly so, and it's a tiny downside to probably the best Sonic figure like it I've seen, Classic vs. Modern aside.

Hey everybody! Feeling well? I hope so, because that way the following videos will hit you that much harder!

Wow... That was seriously bland as hell. What the hell, Dimps?

Generations 3DS videos! Vast stretches of nothingness! Classic levels without remixes! Homing Attack! (You unlock it after beating the Genesis era so at least it's not forced...)
By forced you mean I can unequip the homing attack? O: :O

If modern Water Palace seems to have surprisingly better level design, that's because it's ripped directly from Sonic Rush.
Wait, seriously? They also ripped that layout too?

GOD DAMN IT DIMPS

Avoiding this version... christ.

The only good thing coming from the 3DS version is Eggman's VA sounding like the Spy from TF2.

Seriously, I dunno if I should collectively strangle Dimps for this shit or pay for the therapy they very likely need.

Is there a vid for Robotnik's/Eggman's voice?

GAAAHH! What horrible level design on Classic. This is not DIMPS normal Sonic level design. They are closer to Sonic CD with huge vertical levels that go all over the place. This is almost straight left to right like a 2-D Mario Bros game only with barely any platforming. I haven't picked up the game yet (I'm doing a review) and I'm already regretting my purchase.

Prove me wrong DIMPS. Prove me wrong.

One thing I'll say is that the modern levels look like decent fun. Especially that video I saw of Modern Tropical Resort (but speeding up the soundtrack to twice the speed is NOT a remix).

DIMPS just can't seem to do classic right. They've been doing Rush style Sonic for so long, it's all they know. XD

The Motorcycle That Wouldn't Slow Down
I like how the blimp in the hub says "got ring?" but in the level reads "got rings?"

Doesn't really help that Dimps were working on multiple games at once. Sonic 4 Ep 1 (and now Ep2 if it has started), Colors DS and this in a span of a year and a half.

But still, why the fuck did Sega think this was a good idea?

Nope, too late, I already took it out of the box again...

A bit of wishful thinking, it seems. It's still a little impressive compared to some of the Sonic junk they sold before this.
I got it as a gift, anyway...

This is the one I have.

edit: It actually is the same one :/

Silver rival race

Note that Silver's running, in exactly the same style as Sonic's usual running. Nice attention to detail there guys.

Modern Casino Night bugs me, because it's a level traditionally designed around pinball physics... which really don't showcase well in their engine here. I think Sonic 4 had better pinball physics, and I don't know what to say about that.

Why does Classic Emerald Coast give you rings right before the end sign? The funny thing is the level gives me a Sonic Advance 1 Neo GHZ vibe because of the look, but the layout isn't nearly as interesting. For example, SPRINGS MUCH? You can get Sonic up to a higher spot in the level without a spring shooting him there...

Here's the thing that bugs me most about what I've seen, though. In the console version, boosting blindly tended to be punished. You could see cues that there would probably be a safe boost coming up, but if you spammed a boost every time you jumped, you'd probably find your face in some spikes or down a pit. Here... boosting seems to be the answer, the best answer, to everything. It's almost always the best decision to take a flying jump and boost, or boost down the next stretch of level, whatever. I know Dimps can design levels better than this, or they could, at least; I wasn't the biggest fan of Colors DS, and even there they put far more thought into the layouts and design. So why is it "Boost boost boost boost" works so well here, is pretty much encouraged?

ZealousD

Makes world leading predictions like "The sun will rise tomorrow"
Considering they made such a big deal of hiring the people who wrote Colours, I expected something more along the lines of that.

Now that I think about it, I wonder if the CG scenes used in the trailers were supposed to be used in the game...

I just don't see how you could possibly wrap around anything resembling a good story with this game's setup. Any justification would have had to have been some sort of lame time travel plot. You couldn't really do anything else.

He did the exact same thing in Sonic Rivals, so it's not like it's unheard of. Unless we're ignoring that the Rivals series ever existed again.

The what not? What series?

All jokes aside (that includes you, Rivals, get to the side), it didn't exactly set the standards for the series. It's just silly that for the same amount of functionality, they could've just animated Silver hovering like usual instead of just sprinting.

He's not supposed to be a "runs fast" character like many of the others, but his abilities make up for it. It would be like animating Tails as running Sonic-speed in Sonic's pose, instead of using his tails to boost his running like usual. (I'm sure Sonic 3 & Knuckles did this in spots, but that was because of sprite limitations.)

Man, the 3DS version seems to generic and bland.. :( It could have easily been done on the original DS imo.. Does anyone know if development started on the original DS and they transferred it over?

It's highly possible as I am sure at some point of time sonic rush was orignally a GBA alpha, same sort of thing as here.

Some of it doesn't even look like a level designed by a human being. It almost feels like, at times, they used some sort of computer level design algorithm to randomly generate a level and said "Yeah, I suppose this is good enough."

These people have made Sonic games before and yet they show a complete and utter lack of any skill in doing so with this game. I've seen fangames made by teenagers with more thoughtful level design.

I have a problem here with the PC version.

Everything is going good, 60FPS all the way...but after a while (10-15 mins) things start to slow down and then LAAAAAG, I need to restart the game each time its doing this.

Specs: Intel i5 2500k 4.5Ghz
Geforce 480GTX
4Gb RAM DDR3

A friend of mine told me it may be a 'memory leak'...I will upgrade to 8Gb DDR3 if necessary. Anybody else having the same issue?

Seems to be working for people.

Wow, the 3DS version looks horrible all around. Terrible level design.

smh @ making the homing attack necessary for Classic Sonic in the later levels.

For the first 30 seconds, it's just Sonic running to the right with very little obstacles, springs, enemies, or anything.

What the hell is this shit?

I also don't see much point in the race in terms of keeping ahead when considering he just teleports back to your position if you've outpaced him far enough.

Eh, you may be surprised.
I'd like to be surprised since there's still quite a few DIMPS Sonic games I really like for the GBA and DS, but I'm honestly not expecting much if this is how far they've slipped. At this rate just taking Sonic Advance 1, giving it a 'classic' make over and up-ressing it would elicit more praise from me than what they're probably doing for Episode 2.

That's awesome. Thanks. I've been looking into purchasing some Sonic figures after seeing a lot of them at my local Toys 'R' Us. Might as well, I'm renovating the 2nd floor of my house and I'll get a new room at this rate.

Watched the videos of the 3DS version. Seems like nothing has changed since I played it at Gamescom. Still boring, empty environments and shitty animation.

The Biolizard boss looks somewhat cool though. Man, such a shame. Could've been a great portable version :\

Man they're still using that bored sounding Sonic for the 3DS version. I guess it fits, cause nothing I've seen makes the game look exciting at all. Very disappoint.

It's funny that Sega said they tried to get Jaleel White but couldn't get in touch with him, when he's now offering to do birthday parties for 14k and seems to be easy to contact. Such a missed opportunity =(

If you find the 10" Metal Sonic, I'd recommend that one too. Looks great, stands up by itself, awesome figure for how cheap it is. I'm ordering the premium Metal Sonic figure from F4F, and I still actually think I prefer the proportions on the TRU 10" Metal Sonic more.

Ugh, Sega really fails at making games now don't they =(

Not really. I prefer silent Sonic to, say, the pitch-bending trick they used for the Modern trailer (36s in).

The problem was that they didn't play it off naturally, they did sort of what was done in Night of the Werehog, where they made it seem like the characters wanted to talk sometimes but couldn't.

Plus Classic Sonic did too much standing around and watching the conversation in those cinemas. While the Modern Era figures talked their heads off to needlessly explain the plot, Classic Sonic and Classic Tails should've been zipping around in the background, checking things out, messing with the hub entrances and such. So there isn't so much of a weird focus on Classic Sonic not talking.

Exactly. Classic Sonic looking like he wants to talk but being mute seemed really off to me. I would have nerdgasmd had Jaleel White's cocky voice come out of his mouth.

Actually, no it's not, because I have that one too. It's very similar, just a much larger version of it they made, with some differences like the ears and hand positions.

And man, some of you know how to drag a joke out. Really slowly. Drag.

Will keep my eyes open. Thanks!

Hold boost and hope for rings.
That's pretty much it, honestly. I'd switch to the
classic Super Sonic and try to get rings there. I've found that its easier to gather rings on the 2D plane. It's also easier to avoid lasers there so switch to the classic Super Sonic whenever a laser is starting up.
