Sonic Generations |OT| What Sonic can learn from Sonic

John,

There are bits with waterfalls and a waterslide where it drops down to the tens. I have to say, during these moments, you're in the air and are not actually controlling sonic. otherwise, it runs over 50 frames for me with default settings

Thanks for the impressions. Much appreciated. I definitely plan to play the game, but not sure if I'll get it for 360 or PC. I might go with 360 so I can play it with a steadier framerate and achievements. :)

I'd go with PC, especially at 10 bucks (Steam/Amazon).You have a pretty good card.

They kind of fixed that waterslide today. No more slideshow when going down. There are dips, but they aren't dramatic like before.

The minimum/recommended requirements are super conservative. If you've got an 8800GT or better then you should get a (mostly) steady 60fps in 720p. Its really not very demanding on the GPU at all.

I have Intel HD Graphics :( Is there any way to download another graphics driver or something for the game to use instead? :X

There are some spotty moments for me and I have a system that's pretty okay (gtx275/core2duo @ 2.33) Most of the time it's 60fps but when a lot of physics are happening it gets taxing.

Digging this game, although it's not perfect. Somehow the levels based on Sonic 06 turned out to be garbage! Who would have thought.

Sorry, you're probably going to need a dedicated GPU to run this game on a PC. Intel HD just isn't made for games.

I really liked this game. Level design goes downhill from the time you start the game, but for me it's Sonic's best outing since Dreamcast. Note that I haven't played Colors.

This game is fantastic, and I'm not a Sonic fan by any means. But where's the Casino Night Pinball DLC that was supposed to come out for PC on Steam today?

HOLY SHIT. Did they really just go there?:

Classic Tails: Dr. Robotnik!
Dr. Robotnik: No one calls me that anymore!

A pure slap in the face. Fuck off Sega. :lol

This game... this fucking game... The fucking first level...

Been wanting it to get it for a while, and thanks to the Steam Sale, I just paid a cool 10 bucks for it...

This feeling... It's like I'm back in 5th grade, man...

So far I've gotten all the Red Stars that I can get before the 2nd Boss Door, just need to finish the challenge acts for Seaside Hill. I love this game, I really do. Even though some of the Red Stars are annoying as fuck to get, it's only a drop in the bucket. Also, am I alone in thinking that "His World" is a perfect fit for the Modern Sonic doppelganger races?

It gets better. Just wait until you start unlocking music and play some more levels.

It gets better.

Don't buy the 360 version if you want a decent framerate. The game simply doesn't play well at 30fps and the 360 version can't keep stay at that.

Is this a game that a bunch of people on GAF gush over for 3 months and then after 8 months everyone goes "lol, that game was a such a piece of shit"?

I guess that's not a fair metric for games though since that's pretty much every game.

Nah, I think we might see something closer to Nier, where the love just keeps on increasing.

So... is there any chance at all that SEGA are going to release DLC for this game? I'm suspecting not, since we've heard nothing and it has been months, but damn, it's a wasted opportunity. So many other good levels to choose from.

Since everyone just wants a bunch of levels from Sonic 3 & Knuckles anyway, they've decided for their next project to just work on a flat out remake of Sonic 3 & Knuckles, pixel-perfect placement of everything in the Zones, same physics, just redone visuals.
This is a good representation of what we should expect: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZxXycBv3Rlk

Very cool. Like a modern Christmas NiGHTS.

WOW though...Omochao is VERY annoying. I turned him off before I even started playing because I knew what to expect. Such a shame so many people will play through the whole game with that option on because it's default...really takes away from the music/mood/flow of the stages.
And recording a video demonstrating a new remix/mod with that shit on? Amateurs...

Sonic Team should have just left their level editing tools in the PC version just for the hell of it. Sonic fanbase is kind of crazy anyway, you can probably expect to see tools for this game in some manner eventually. But yeah, the game should ask you "hey are you a dumbass?" and set omochao to on or off depending on your answer.

According to the Steam news feed for Sonic Generations, the Casino Night DLC was suppose to be released yesterday.

I don't see it anywhere on Steam though, did it get delayed?

So I've been replaying a little bit of this to see if I should put it on my GOTY list (I do this with every game I consider, not just Generations), and man oh man am I rusty. My time for GHZ Act 1 is horrendous (a little over 54 seconds).
KuGsj.gif

Edit: I've forgotten how much I effing HATE this Vector beat challenge.

Also, I got Kirby Mass Attack/Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2 (Christmas) and Super Mario 3D Land this week, so I'll take a stab at those tonight. :)

This the nicest thing. Needs falling snow and a better synth instrument for the main GHZ melody to make it perfect. Otherwise, the colour palette is great.

Someone should just mod the entire thing to make a perfect Sonic equivalent of Christmas NiGHTS.

And this is why you double-dip for the PC version even if you already have it on consoles. It's just getting started, folks. (Less than 3 hours left on the Steam sale price!)

Unfortunately, they probably pushed it back because they didn't want it to debut at 66% off.

I can't seem to find it now, but there's images and even some video of very early level editor tests some users at Sonic Retro are doing. There's even been a little talk thrown around of porting Sonic Unleashed 360 levels to Generations as I guess the level geometry formats are very similar.

Would be worth it just to replace QTEs with tricks alone.

OK, so I bought this in the Steam sale and I need to rant, so please hear me out.

Brief bit of background, I played and loved Sonic 1-3, Knuckles and CD when I was a kid. I grew up in a house with a Master System and Mega Drive/MegaCD, so Sonic was very much the most prominent video game mascot from my childhood pre-32bit era. Other than replaying those games in one form or another, the only Sonic game I'd played since then was Sonic Adventure on the original Dreamcast.

So based on the "Classic Sonic" angle, I grabbed this and my god, this is possibly the most wonderful and awful mix of feelings a video game has ever given me. First off, they nailed Classic Sonic. Seeing him now is just how I imagine the character from the classic games would look, act and move in a proper HD treatment. He sort of reminds me of Oswald the Lucky Rabbit and I love it. And playing the first stage is just like the classic gameplay I remember. I immediately fall into that old mindset, and it's a blast. I imagine this is how Mega Man fans felt when they got Mega Man 9.

And then I finish the first stage, and they introduce the modern Sonic. What the fuck is this douche? He isn't Sonic. When the fuck did this happen? And then I play his stage, and it's fucking nonsense. I mean, it's literally no fun, and they try shoving as much speed and bullshit onscreen to the point where it's just annoying. Then he's douching in the cutscene at the end, and I want him to just go away.

I just ran through Chemical Zone with both characters and the same thing. A really well crafted homage to the old Sonic 2 stage with the classic character, and a Michael Bay style bullshit level from the modern Sonic. From joy to gross.

I mean, I don't really understand how Sega released this. It shows the classic and modern gameplay side by side, and it's almost going out of its way to prove how awful the recent games and the series have become, from gameplay to characters to music.

I just needed to rant a little. Has Sega announced any further plans for the classic character?

Wow...that would be amazing. But wouldnt they only be able to do Modern versions of those? Unless they went through the effort to create an original classic act for those zones.

EDIT: Dont constantly boost through Modern stages. Even though they are faster paced, still take your time for the most part. Modern stages get significantly better as the game goes on...but if you dont like that gameplay style even when not boosting constantly through the zone, then it cant be helped. Also believe it or not, but even classic Sonic doesnt play the same as the 16bit titles (his spin dash and rolls to be specific).

I think there were a couple 2D-exclusive missions, I remember one where you had to locate Chao. It might have been DLC.

Always nice to see other impressions. It seems to be one of those polarizing games here on GAF. I grew up playing the Genesis games religiously, and I actually found I enjoyed many of the modern levels as much as the classic ones.

I had almost the exact same experience :^) I played a lot of the old GameGear games and really enjoyed exploring the levels, often I would accidently cross the finish.

Modern Sonic is such a lame character compared to classic Sonic. The gameplay is so much about speed that I feel like mashing buttons to rush to the finish and get rid of it. Often you are zooming around with little to no control, only to suddenly switch to a part where you do need to pay attention, resulting in failure.

I don't really care for Sonic CD so far either though, bumpers throwing you into spikes or the wrong way, or getting stuck in pinball machines, just to show that Sonic isn't just about pressing right with the occasional jump. Seems like Sega doesn't understand what makes Sonic fun.

It is a shame, because the game looks great, the classic Sonic levels are fun and have really good physics. Removing modern Sonic would have made it so much better IMO.

Holy crap, that thing captures off a HDMI lead? I don't think Hauppage have a capture card that can do that currently released. What formats can you save your recordings in? The Hauppage HD PVR I am eyeing up can only produce raw .ts files, which Sony Vegas Pro (which I use to edit my videos currently) won't read the sound from.

It's HDMI yes also comes with a converter plug for svideo and component and all that.

If you use the software which comes with the driver it saves in... *checks* .mpg but you can also use Xsplit to rec in a ton of other formats.

It's a damn good card for the days I have played with it.

Man, going from Sonic CD to this feels so damn weird. I mean, I just spent a few hours playing a few Classic stages again, and the physics are quite different still (ie: the spindash is so damn powerful in this HD version, as opposed to the 3DS version and the Sonic CD version where they aren't really that powerful at all).

I just plowed through the Classic Sonic stages no problem as a result, even if I'm still kinda rusty. :O

LOL! Switch him to the Japanese voiceovers. Since you probably have no idea what he's saying (since parts of the script are different), he might sound better to you.

And it's a 20th anniversary game. They gotta include everything, good and bad! The Modern Sonic stages get better, but I guess the stigma might still remain.

All I know is that... this game made me dislike Vector even more (fuck you Vector and your damn beat challenge and throwing Classic Sonic off cliffs). The only good thing about him is his walk!

My girlfriend bought me the 3DS version for Christmas.

Okay...what the fuck is with these stupid added abilities? The classic Sonic can do the targeting now, along with some random fireball shit.

I also cannot STAND the boss levels because it feels broken as shit. I literally feel like I'm winning on accident or something.

Finally, you can REALLY tell even without looking at the names of the levels which ones are classic and which are new-ish.

Old levels: short, interesting, and sweet.

New-ish levels: long, dull, and broken.

The best part is honestly the levels where you chase the Chaos Emerald, even though those are badly designed in areas, as well. Still, they're a bright spot among the rest of the game.

Are you talking about the fire shield? Cause that thing's been around since Sonic 3.

If that is the new fire shield, then it sucks ass and is nothing like the old one.

Why giving him Sonic Colors powers solely in the Sonic Colors stage is a big deal kinda confounds me as well.
Who said it was a big deal besides you? It just sucks is all.

Oh right, the burst wisp. I was imagining some Mario style fireballs

I thought the Burst Wisp was a good fit for Classic Sonic after the horrors of the Spike Wisp in Sonic Generations HD, tbh. Better than Void.

Though I wish Drill had gotten its time in the spotlight like it deserved to. :(

I love the Modern Sonic levels as much as I love the Classic ones. *shrug*
Me too. :D Are you almost finished?

Just finished the 3DS version, easily the weakest Rush game.

1] Sonic Rush Adventure
1] Sonic Rush

3] Sonic Colours
4] Sonic Generations

The final boss was better than the HD version though, how fun is that?
Also, the last two levels were really fun. and from portable games. there, was it that hard? instead, they had to put levels from Sonic Adventure 1 & 2 aswell.

On the other hand the HD version is one of the best Sonic games; it doesn't have an Adventure feeling (the "overworld" is pretty sad, even Unleashed was better) but the gameplay is solid and crazy fun.

Got this as a gift on Steam yesterday, just got to the third section. Loving it so far, though there are some clunky stages.
